View Full Version : EB won't run. Vannila will.

I recently downloaded EB onto a perfectly fine vannila 1.5 RTW. However, when I run EB, vannila RTW plays rather than the mod. All I can do is play the three Roman families. I have a vista and the validate install file is blank, but isn't that suposed to happen? EB is located in the same folder as RTW, with both vannilla an EB executables in the folder. I am using 1.2 EB.
Where is your RTW folder located? Still in C:/Program Files/Activision/...?
The reason I ask is that I recall reading that RTW 1.5 should be located somewhere other than Program Files with EB installed in the same folder.

It was not. I uninstalled and reinstalled and the same problem exists. This is the picture of the folder, if it helps. (https://img8.imageshack.us/img8/1175/rtwscreen.jpg)
The shortcut has a bug, you need to move a quote-mark. See the frequent issues.

hmm, from the picture, it seems you have installed rome in "my documents" folder. that could be the root of the problem.
HI!
Problem is, i guessm, with command file : PLAY EB
It is not complete:
You have to type in at the properties:
-mod:eb -show_err
Because the install does only this -show_err
Same was on my computer, but hopefully i could solve the problem. :).
That's all.

the easiest way to fix this is to:
A) make sure that R:TW is not in program files since you are using vista(i have one too :P) if it is in program files orprogram files x86, then uninstall and reinstall rtw. this time, install it to
C:\Games\Activision\Rome-Total War\
this will ensure it works. install the patches and EB to that exact file name. now, there are 2 ways you can ensure you have a working shortcut. either:
A) downlaod EB 1.0 and then install 1.1 and 1.2 over it. this will automatically give you a shortcut in the start menu that says something like "EB single player" or something like that.
B) install trivial script when you go ot install 1.1. this is a little harder though.
I just re-bought the game because I thought ok, maybe it's my discs, well, it's a legitimate copy, from gamestop, has 4 discs, 3 RTW and 1 Barbarian Invasion, it reads Gold Edition on the case cover, however, when I install it, I get only to 1.3, so I update to 1.5. Before that even gets this far however, I find that the little green paper that came with it, much like the first time I bought gold edition about 2 years ago is that the CD Key is not needed, I never am required to enter it like I do for M2 TW. Despite that I continue on to the exact instructions that this topic
ht tp: //forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=80270&highlight=help+install
says to do, everything, exact, except the name of his folder being likely his name and mine being mine.
Then I look at your post and see that you have
C:\Games\Activision\Rome-Total War\
I don't get the Activision part, I get The Creative Assembly\Rome-Total War\
I'm running vista as well, but this all goes fine, so I proceed to install EB 1, then EB 1.2, and I try to play, the game gets to where you can choose a faction and start the campaign, everythings ready, cool music playing, click start campaign and ... nothing, the game quietly crashes (I suppose), I can press escape to exit, nothing fancy, no alt+ctrl+del command needed, just a simple esc press does it. Well, I waited for 1, 2, 3, 4, hours all night and got up the next morning and nothing, esc took me right back to desktop. Ran the verification thing and I get an empty notepad file that's completely useless, so I have nothing to place here.
I'm not angry, I'm annoyed, but I'd like to know if it's just not going to run. Thanks for any help and reading this far.

well, i think it is required to do Activision. thats the folder it is used for. i have never encountered your problem though, it is most likely an installation problem.
let me ask you this: did you install only RTW, or RTW and BI? if you installed both, you need to find the BI version of EB, or it will not run right.
There's a BI version of EB 1.2? Good god, I had no idea, where is that located at?

what you need to do is probably google "EB 1.1 BI" or something like that, and keep searching untl you find it. then google the same thing but instead put in 1.2. i will try and find a specific link for you.

ok, here is a thread about making it compatible: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=101745
and here is a download for EB 1.1 for BI:

I think this is rather more useful. (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=95664)
This will work out right, even then when I install RTW, I get 1.5, then when I place BI, I revert to 1.3, should I then patch back up to 1.5 or? I'm really now confused considering I had thought this would be relatively easy. Anyone live in Michigan? I will pay you to install this game and make it work.
If you install BI 1.3, you need to update to BI 1.6 afterwards. That includes RTW 1.5. But you may be better off installing only RTW and not BI, if you're not desperate to use the BI executable for it.
Thank you all for your help, but several hours later of trying just about all of your suggestions, and still getting nothing from the validation, I'm done, I'll just wait for the M2 TW version if that's ever made. Thanks again.
I feel I should add that this is several hours of just today, this has gone on more than a week now, so as it doesn't appear that I simply gave it a short time to get this to work. More than likely I'm disheartened and will try again for another few days after a few days, but for the most part I don't think it will work.

haha, thats pretty funny. not that you cant get it installed, thats bad. but i did the same thing my first time, except i didnt use BI.
i think if you uninstall all of it, and then install vanilla but NOT BI, then use normal downloads you can use it easy. the only thing BI really adds to the mod is more naval invasions, which doesnt matter much unless you're fighting carthaginians/egyptians.
Tried your last suggestion several times, and still no go, just ends with the clicking of the Go after choosing a faction.

hmm.....thats odd.....ive never heard of this glitch before.......
then again, i have read about all these bugs/ctd's/glitches in ETW and EB, but so far have encountered none but ctd after naval battles in E:TW, but that was fixed in the march 30 patch and i havent had a single glitch/ctd since. though there are som major a.i. trade bugs.

Are you sure you're not using a NOCD executable? As I'm sure you've read in the validation thread, this won't work. You need to use the original executable, with the CD in the drive.
