View Full Version : Can you set the tax rate for individual cities, or just on the whole?
Up to now i've been setting the tax rates for the nobility and the unwashed masses in different cities manually, like when i conquer a new province overseas i immediately put everything to low for a few years, etc.
Today i noticed that i set the tax rates to low in the southern most Indian province, and then when i opened the tab for my capital city in Europe the taxes there had been set to low also, so i nudged them back up to highest and the taxes in India went up to highest also.
Can you only set taxes higher or lower on the whole for every city or is there a way to do it individually?

It can't be done individually (except for making a region tax exempt).

No, I don't think so, but you can exempt regions from tax, in order to keep order.

The differant Global Theaters: America, Euroe, and India, may have seperate and differant tax policies I think. I thought I heard that from an advisor or somthing. Maybe they are the same?
Exempting regions from taxes is also a good way to grow its villages and harbors, if the region doesn't have any food supplies.

This is correct to my knowledge. Territories in Europe, India, and America can have their tax rates set independently for United Provinces for sure. This may be because they have an India and America ministry member. I don't know if you start as Prussia, who doesn't have any theater specific cabinet members, if they would get a new minister or if they would be able to set different tax rates per global region. It will be interesting to see if the ministers tie in to tax rates or if they are independent of one another. I haven't run into a situation to determine it yet in either of my campaigns.

So why can't you set tax rates for each city? Seems very strange to me since previous TW titles allowed per-city management.
As far as I can tell this is due to:
A) They wanted to make it harder to keep happiness up in the provinces since you can't micromanage taxes per city. I.e. you set you taxes low for the lowest happiness province (i.e. hurt your funding) or you leave your taxes higher and just hope the low happiness provinces don't revolt.
or
B) They wanted to simplify the taxation system. Personally I don't think that any dumbing down was necessary here.

When i conquered an indian territory in my prussia game i got a viceroy for the india region and could set the tax rates there seperately from europe.

It makes it so much easier.
I got so sick of manually adjusting 50 tax rates, I put it to automate at the start of turn 1.
I'd thought from the pre-release marketing that they said you'd manage taxes for everywhere at a single screen, with ability to micro-adjust individual provinces where you wanted to. Obviously not correct- as already pointed out, you can only exempt specific regions entirely but not micro-adjust. Just a misunderstanding on my part, I guess. As to theater-level taxes, I haven't gotten there.
I really like the overall tax thing, b'c province-by-province just killed campaigns as your empire grew. Still, it does make the game more difficult, b'c if you exempt newly conquered prov's to improve moral, it reduces econ incentive to go conquering in the first place!
