View Full Version : Gah! Marian Romans!

I just noticed one of the improvements of the later versions of the game over the previous versions I'd played. I have a very slow Carthage game going (I let all settlements but three revolt and then started conquering slowly) that's at about 210 B.C. or so. So slow I haven't gotten the reforms yet, although I think I'm close.

I sent a couple spies to Italy and noticed something scary. Rome already has had the Marian reforms. And they're finally conquering Gaul, which I think will be able to produce Marian troops (never played as Rome myself...)

I'm really looking forward to facing their cohorts with my own reformed units, much more exciting than fighting Camillan Hastati. :2thumbsup:

Just wanted to thank the team for putting so much thought into making the gameplay exciting.

Hmmm, it seems like the Romans just reached the trigger for unconditional Marian Reforms. It happens.

AI gets far easier Marian Reforms. WAD, but it sucks.

Yep, it will be a nice challenge taking on the Marian units once I get around to Carthage's reform. I'm looking forward to it.

In the earlier versions I played it seemed as if the AI factions never got their reforms (at least, the harder ones). I'm glad they made it easier on the AI factions.

don't they have to reach the polybian reforms first, which they only achieve when they possess 2 cities in sicily (for the polybian reforms the AI has the same conditions as you, AFAIK)? Didn't you, as Carthage, conquer the island?

I let just about all of my provinces rebel except for Carthage itself and the two cities nearest to it. I still ended up having to "help" the AI conquer Sicily, but it was worth it to get a worthwhile enemy for the end stretch.

One thing I like about the Marian reforms are the Vigiles. The AI spawns them like they're the new Legionaires or something. My frontier cities are manned by 8 Scythian Archers and 4 groups of Boii Cingetos in case they get a little ballsy and try to attack the city. You should see the casualty reports every time I sally out.

Never seen the romans have the marian reforms. If I wasnt stuck with version 1.1 because of btsh I might ask you to post your saved game.

What are vigiles exactly?

These are... but they're imperial, not Marian...

No, actually the Romani get Vigiles during the Marian era. -M

Yes I can confirm this, although europabarbarorum.com states otherwise, they are available when the Marian reforms kick in. They are meant to guard towns, but you know the AI....:sweatdrop:

mh, ok. Vigiles were created by Augustus some day A.D. , that's why I thought them to be "Augustan" / Imperial

You're totally right.

But for gameplay reasons, it would be pretty clumsy if the Cohortes Reformata are the only regular unit that can be trained in the Romanii settlements (with factional MIC). :book2:

The Vigiles in the Marian Era represent pre-Vigile latin settler defensive militia. Some low level defensive unit was wanted and it would be a waste to use another unit slot just to create a very similar unit for the Marian Era.
