Alright, having played through the naval battles a bit, I've noticed that the AI seems to get a disproportionally high number of 'critical hits' compared to the player. I've had two fourth rate SOTL's blown sky high by a fleet of one fifth rate, two brigs and some galleys. Neither of them were in terrible condition, but the AI apparently just decided I was going to lose that battle.
It also seems that the player rarely gets the same 'critical hits'. I recall I got one once in a skirmish battle.
Still, the effect is almost worth losing the ship. Those are some nice explosions :gring:

Hm, interesting. I'd say I've had around four or five of my shots hit an AI ship's powder magazine, but it's never happened to me. Maybe I'm just lucky.
I think with the higher difficulty settings enemy units get bounuses that allow them to get more critical hits than you

Watch out for those galleys! They carry big guns firing forward. Get them in the side or from the rear but take them out quick!
They aren’t hard to sink but you have to get them before they get a shot off at you.

Current critical hits.
AG = 1
AI = 0
I'm sure that will change eventually.

Ship Name, Firepower, Speed, Maneuverability, Hull Strength, Cannons, Crew, Cost
Galley, F:256, S:18, M:H, HS:1, Ca:4, Cr: 74, C: 430
4th Rate, F:158, S:17, M:L, HS:21, Ca:58, Cr: 152, C: 1550
1st Rate F:238, S:15, M:L, HS:27, Ca:106, Cr: 264, C: 2540
Yaeh right…does anything look strange to you here?
Can you see how a galley gets a critical hit on your ships with that much fire power?
If a galley is pointing at you watch out! It may end up making your ship go BOOM… :titanic:
Get the point?

Wow, I didnt know galleys had so much firepower. I guess I overlooked that thinking that they were just insignificant. Seems like it would be a good addition to have 2-4 in a good navy.

The trouble with galleys is their paper-thin hull and the fact that while they have huge firepower they only have 4 cannons.
They are highly manouverable and rather fast however. They seem to be best used against smaller ships, the bigger Lineships will absorb their shots and then tear them to pieces.

Exactly.
Give 'em a broadside and send them to Davey Jone's Locker! :skull:

Yes but in the early game they can mean death to your fledgling fleet.
I guess you could try to ram them if you can’t hit them…

My only experience with ramming is friendly fire...ramming. One of my brigs slammed into a sixth rate in one of my throw-away France play-throughs and de-masted it. I was like :furious3:

Ships don't seem to want to try and avoid each other. I had one battle where everything turned into a giant version of fairground dodgems. I lost five ships to ramming before I quit and tried again out of frustration. :sweatdrop:
