Is there any way (short of declaring war on France as England) to keep the Thirteen colonies from trading away Boston and Maine in the first few turns for French property in the Caribbean?

Your acting almost as if Boston has some relevance in the American Revoultion :laugh4::laugh4:

Bostonians were staunch loyalists to the crown. They fought the revolution tooth and nail until George Washington himself struck down their leader with laserbeams from his eyes.
I think the only way is either hope they don't sell (they didn't in my last game), or declare war, as you said.

This could be in part be explained by what you had pointed out in my thread:

Since the AI is unable to normally acquire settlements in that area, while simultaneously having the acquisition of settlements in that area set as higher in priority rather than territorial expansion on the Continent itself- it may be seeking to iron out this dichtomy through the only means available to it, namely diplomacy.

I think a lot of the strange AI trading behavior is resulting from this. I would get one or two regional trade offers a year until I had a pretty bit of colonial real estate, at which point several factions were offering me all their expendable provinces every turn.
To France: I'm not trading Flanders for Newfoundland and other crap up north. I'm not trading Dutch Guyana for those crap, either.
But yeah, they're pretty insistent with the trading. They remind me of me trying to get the British to trade me seasoning for the first farm upgrade.

Well it would certainly make your food taste better, the troops would be happy about that one! :laugh4:
By seasoning, I mean the naval technology where they season the wood they use. Who in their right mind would trade with the British for their food?

Uh... you don't lose your technology. Thats just plain silly. The tech thats traded is added to the respective nations.
And I posted this somewhere else, but its mostly because the AI looks at regions in a purely literal way. They see the benefits of that one, and the benefits of that one, and ask you to trade. Of course, this leads to ridiculous offers like Lithuania for East Prussia, or Ukraine for Flanders.

I'm happy to trade technologies with my allies even if I get the poorer deal, as the British I gave 4 techs to the Prussians in return for 2. My allies stay strong on the continent, my Empire is helped to expand, its a win win situation.

I agree with this, I am happy for Portugal to get bayonet technology as I know it'll be buried into a Spaniard and in exchange my people's farm land improves :)

I keep giving tech to Portugal in the hope that they can fend off Spain and Austria. I also feel kinda sorry for them since they got relegated to 'minor' nation. :laugh4:
