For the last week I have been fighting alot of naval battles, in each and every one I have had the graphics ultra on everything, and in all my playtime I have never once seen a sail get punctured or the captains quarters beome smashed. No matter how destructive the voleys the windows stay intact and the sails full. Now I know that the sails are supposed to have holes punched through them because some of the pre-release screenshots showed it So my question is: Is it just my version or has CA cut it out of the game.

I play mine on high and I'm pretty sure I've seen torn sails.
i play on high and ive seen sails torn, ripped with gaping holes and even saw one get ripped off completely and flutter away to land in the water was quite amusing hehe

I've seen torn sails, as well as snapped masts and shatter cabins etc. The damage model on ships seems to be one of the only parts of naval combat which actually works very well.

Huh well the worst i can get is holes in the side of the hull and dismasting.

I know what you are talking about, when I first got the game, my sails never ripped or anything. After fiddling with graphics options a thousand times, they finaly rip and burn and fly off like they are supposed to. Perhaps it is linked to a specific video option or check box?

I have the Very High button set (so all drop downs on Ultra, AA on 4x, Texture filtering 16x) and I have volumetric effects and distortion effects checked.

Me too and I've seen the Stars&Stripes ripped off from one of my sunk ships floating then slowly sinking... It was such a scene that I forgot to hit PrintScreen - which, by the way, I'm still unsure where it saves screenshots in ETW.

On a related note, is ship damage modelled between battles, or is "damage" only represented by loss in crew?

I fought a battle earlier today where one of the enemies ships started out with almost no port armor. I dont know if it was represented graphicaly as far as battle damage though, because it was a brig and it was sunk in like 5 seconds. I only zoom in to check out the sexy ships lol

It is. When you have damaged ships, its best to keep on running away, lest they be taken down by an enthusiastic sloop

Yeah, apparently, damages don't get 'fixed' between battles. I saw the flying dutchman (owned by the UP) at a beginning of a battle, badly damaged. It sunk at the first volley, so I could capture it and repair it for my own purposes :-(

Sails flying off seems to happen in all sorts of graphics levels. Torn sails I haven't seen yet but I just found out how to set everything to ultra. Sometimes when you reset graphics, you have to restart for everything to take effect.
