Mister Cheney doesn't much care for Obama's detainee policies (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090315/ap_on_go_pr_wh/cheney). I don't much care for Dick Cheney.

WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday that Americans are less safe now that President Barack Obama has overturned Bush terrorism-fighting policies and that nearly all the Republican administration's goals in Iraq have been achieved.

"There is no prospect" that Iraq will return to producing weapons of mass destruction or supporting terrorists, Cheney asserted, "as long as it's a democratically governed country, as long as they have got the security forces they do now and a relationship with the United States."

Fulfilling campaign pledges, Obama has suspended military trials for suspected terrorists and announced he will close the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as well as overseas sites where the CIA has held some detainees. The president also ordered CIA interrogators to abide by the U.S. Army Field Manual's regulations for treatment of detainees and denounced waterboarding, part of the Bush program of enhanced interrogation, as torture.

Asked on CNN's "State of the Union" if he thought Obama has made Americans less safe with those actions, Cheney replied, "I do."

"I think those programs were absolutely essential to the success we enjoyed of being able to collect the intelligence that let us defeat all further attempts to launch attacks against the United States since 9/11," Cheney said.

"I think that's a great success story. It was done legally. It was done in accordance with our constitutional practices and principles," he said. "President Obama campaigned against it all across the country. And now he is making some choices that, in my mind, will, in fact, raise the risk to the American people of another attack."

Some Democratic lawmakers and other administration critics have denounced those and other Bush programs, such as warrantless surveillance, as counterproductive and illegal. In defending these policies established by President George W. Bush following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Cheney said he had seen a report itemizing specific attacks that had been stopped because of the intelligence gathered through those programs.

"It's still classified. I can't give you the details of it without violating classification, but I can say there were a great many of them," he said.

You know, I've been thinking about it, and here is my calm, measured reaction.

Shut up, mister Cheney. You were the slimiest, most secretive, most disingenuous, most corrupt, and most irresponsible Vice President the United States of America ever had. Bush has been exposed as someone who simply doesn't have a clue, but you KNOW BETTER, mister Cheney. You knew Iraq would be a quagmire, and you went in anyway. You all knew there were no WMD's, and you went in anyway. You knew thousands upon thousands of Iraqi citizens would die in the crossfire and the bombing raids, and you went in anyway. You knew there were bitter divisions amongst Iraqis along sectarian lines, and without an authoritative government in power, the violence would increase a hundred-fold. You knew how much this war would cost the American people in blood and treasure, and you went in anyway.

You never answered for your crimes or your corrupt practices. You never sat down and were forced to answer vital questions about your questionable, dubious, and outright treasonous behavior. You supported torture and false imprisonment, mister Cheney. You and your buddies suspended Constitutionally mandated protections for our own citizens, mister Cheney.

You remember that fellow who cursed at you during that interview? Or have there been too many to recall? Here's a refresher:

(Cannot post the link here. Do a search on YouTube for "Dick Cheney - Go 'diddly' yourself")

And I say; because you have not answered to the American people, who trusted you with power and honoured you above all others in this nation by allowing you to be next in line for the leadership of the United States, because you have betrayed the trust of the people, betrayed their rights, betrayed the rights of others across the world, had your hand in the cookie jar regarding Halliburton, detained and tortured people, betrayed our troops and allowed them to die on the battlefield without the proper equipment (even after no-bid contracts) and otherwise besmirched the reputation of the land that I love, the United States of America, I say that you are a miserable, hateful little failure of a man, a terrible snake of a politician, a liar and a traitor.

And I repeat the sentiment of that man who showed you the respect you deserve as our former Vice President:

Go 'diddly' yourself, Mister Cheney.

Until you answer for your crimes, you need to sit down and shut up regarding the new administration. Since you wouldn't respond honestly to criticism or answer policy questions, nor was your administration open to debate, you have no right to complain about Obama's policies, nor his administration, which is far more open to the public than yours was. Sit down, shut up, and enjoy your millions of dollars and the memories of the days you spent screwing the entire country and the world.

Bush has people defending him, perhaps out of sympathy, perhaps out of pity; I think maybe, he tried to do his best, and failed miserably in his task. But mister Cheney, you know better. You knew what you were doing. You knew it was corrupt and dishonest. You are not a stupid person. You're just plain evil.

You should probably just ignore him; paying him any more attention extends his political life. If no one (except National Review) listens to him, he'll fade away.

Obviously since he's a robot he'll never actually die.

In the Nixon years Cheney was an idealist with a lot of liberal views. Time goes by, people change.

We have seen that: no one is as right-wing as a disappointed former left-winger. Kind of like reformed smokers or drinkers.

Actually, if you go by policy, Nixon would be considered a flaming liberal in today's political landscape. Title nine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_Nine), anyone? Can you imagine the fury and screaming if anyone tried to pass such a law today?

The definition of conservative has changed a lot since Nixon, that's for sure. And now we have real conservatives and neo-cons. Good Lord, help us, and that's coming from a non-religious person.

Actually I have noticed there are two ways the left can go when they become disappointed. One way is as you described and to become a right-winger with a high degree of cynicism. The other is to go even further left and to radicalise. I have noticed that in several people around me, and to some degree myself.

Slightly more radical (In the sense of advocating direct action, especially on the environment) and with a more anti-Capitalist message (Though I don't show it here, only in real life arguments).

It shows, though not glaringly. Your tone has changed over the last couple of years. You are much less of a "think with my feelings" leftie than I have to deal with here at home though, for which I thank you.

Or Medicare Part D. Imagine the uproar something like that would create. :beam:

medicare part D is one of the biggest shams i can remember in my 34 years on this earth....my grandma went to get some medication under the program and was actually prohibited under the plan from using the generic versions that the pharmacy also sold, which was 80% cheaper than the name brand. I mean, it was there, the pharmacy had the stuff in stock, but she had to get the more expensive version. If there is going to be fellatio like this going on in our government, at least let videotape it

Yup, Medicare D was a multi-billion dollar giveaway to the pharma industry. Absolutely no attempt to control costs. As Will Ferrell says, "You're welcome, America!" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zESzzOAoyDA)

Say what you want about Title Nine, at least there was an ideology behind it. Medicare D was a money grab, pure and simple.
