View Full Version : Steam Problems :/
Hey guys, so I've been trying and trying to get EB on my computer because it's incredibly awesome. However, steam sucks. I have RTW: Gold downloaded from steam. I then installed eb 1.1 and eb 1.2 to a folder containing the RTW files(happens when folder is in program files or not.). When I try to start eb it says "Failed to find steam". Steam does not seem to recognize the game and i therefore cannot find a way to add it to my selection of games opened with steam. I don't understand what steam even has to do with this, but it's frustrating the hell out of me :wall:
I can still open vanilla, but that's useless to me. Please help.
EDIT: Im also using Vista 64 as my operating system.

Okay, right click Rome: Total War Gold
Click properties
Set launch options
Copy and paste this
-mod:eb -show_err
Thank you greatly
I even looked through that common problems thread, must have been brain dead while I did it.
Will be more thorough in my searching next time :book:
Unfortunately this only worked on my computer that uses xp. the two that use vista still can't find steam. no clue why.

You have to start the game from steam, not from the folder.
it doesn't appear in the folder of games that are possible to add and when i browse files and go to the folder that contain the game I can only see the executable files for gold and BI

I have the same problem: cannot start the game in the MOD mode from the steam. The steam just starts the game in the vanilla mode...
When I try to install the game to a separate directory and start it from it's own shortcut: I get the error "Steam cannot be found"...
Sounds like a Steam idiocy to me...

For the matter, it works fine for me, and I was modding RTW since before EB.
You aren't trying to start BI.exe, are you? Probably not.
Did you put this in the launch options?

Hmm... you are using this option with the game downloaded from steam? I know, this works on a CD install (on my old machine): but seems to fail on my new Windows 64bit vista machine. On this one, I downloaded all Rome games (RTW, BI, Alex) from steam. The vanilla games run fine (they need to be launched THROUGH the Steam interface though), but I seem unable to launch any of the Rome mods. If I modify the shortcut as suggested by you above: the only thing I get is "cannot find steam" error whereas in the steam interface: no mods appear, only the vanilla versions of the game.

I believe you may have installed EB incorrectly.
I downloaded directly from steam. If that doesn't work, you should need a re-install of EB.

Did you leave the game in the default folder where steam puts it (somewhere in "program files/steam/..."? Or did you copy it out into a separate folder outside "program files" (as EB team suggests)? I did the latter. Maybe that's my problem.

Well, you have to put it in the default folder, otherwise steam doesn't recognize the game at all. Put it back, and try to play.

Will try later. It was my understanding that EB has difficulties running from "C:\program files\.." directories. So, I just copied the whole RTW directory from the steam folder to "C:\EB12\" and tried running the mod through a modified shortcut. Obviously it did not work (was working on my old machine; with the regular CD install though).

It should be fine. I have a bunch of mods for a bunch of games, all of which are recommended to be installed out of program files, working fine with steam.
Not a fanboy in the slightest, but it isn't as bad as you all make it out to be.

I have to thank you :)
I did what you said (installed the mod in the designated steam directory rather than 'outside' as suggested by the EB installer) and everything works like a charm now :) on the 'highest' graphics settings, mind you...
The only itch I have is a flickering radar mini-screen (in battles). Maybe crossfire has something to do with this. after all: this is not a new game.

You're welcome :D
I don't know about the mini-map. I do remember at least a few threads about it, so you should do some searching around. Probably something conflicting or another.
