The game crashed no problem.
Now steam is throwing a fit and saying it cannot start my game.
Is this some DRM bollox, because i don't care if steam cannot connect, i want to play the game i have purchased?!?!
I thought steam would be fine with offline play, only to find that steam is flakey and won't let you play unless its informed its squalid little gigolo of your intentions.
There has been a steam update today. Maybe try restarting Steam and see if that helps?
If that doesn't help, going to 'File' and selecting 'Go Offline...' might be worth a try.

As Susanna said, restart steam and it should work fine.

It's a common Steam Error. Restart steam/your computer and try again, it should be fine.

I was receiving the same error when I tried to play. I was also getting a message in the steam window that read "download starting...." but never saw a download actually happen. In my case it had to do with my hard drive being a FAT32 format instead of an NTFS.
Check to see what file system you're using if it's FAT32 take a look at the link below.

The instructions say "for vista users" but I have XP and still followed them and got the downloads done and the game working.
