Guys, I'm in need of help.

At work, we have defined a folder on a colleague's computer as a writeable-shared one for our use.

Yet we want this folder to be accessed by only that certain department, not any other ones working here. So we need the access process to ask for login/password every time someone tries to browse that folder. "Every time" is the keyword. Currently it does not. You can browse that folder right away.

Looking for your quick help. Thanks in advance.

Edit: All PCs use Windows XP.

I'll be damned, this is much harder on XP than on Vista. Its got me stumped right now.

If you aren't using a domain and/or domain logins, just create a specific userid on the system hosting the share. The actual person would just need to use that credential when accessing the share.

One thing you will NOT be able to enforce is the "asking for password every time". If the user messes up and forgets, then they can select "remember my login for this share", and/or mount it as a drive the same way, thus eliminating the need to log in every time. Further, it will only ask for the credentials ONCE per session. In other words, if these systems are "always" on and are not specific to an individual, then once they access the share, it will store the login and never ask for it again.

Considering using FTP instead. It will meet your requirements better.

I think any valid username/password combo for the host machine should be able to login to the FTP service.... Can you connect using a valid credentials?

Oh well, bypassing that part, another issue pops up.

This FTP is supposed to serve other PCs on the same LAN. So do I need FTP port to be forwarded to the server's IP?

Generally, devices on the same LAN should be able to access other devices on the same network without impediment. What exactly is the issue at this point, are the clients not able to access the server?

Exactly. The login window pops up as you type the ftp address; you enter the login info yet you get returned to that window again without any other consequence.

Doing it thru IIS, any user that has rights to the ftp folder should be able to login.

I've managed it through the permissions phase as well. Yet another bugger arises:

Although I login through Windows Explorer, any file I try to open directly over FTP by double-clicking brings IE or which browser ever is defaulted.

Is there anyway the processing of files is conducted so that the associated program is run after double-clicking rather than the web browser ?
