I'm fairly new to E:TW so im not sure if this is a glitch, but heres my problem:
i researched plug and socket bayonets, and traded with someone for the square formation. now i cannot use bayonets or the square formation at all. after i researched the bayonets, i created a unit and sent them into combat. for some reason they were charged by cavalry and did not use bayonets. then i tried it again, using the close-combat only button, and they still used swords. what gives? im sending cossacks into battle versus cavalry, and the only way i wil win is with square formation and bayonets.
on a side note, how do i take and access screenshots in E:TW? i had an epic victory, half the men of my enemy, with only 1 actual gunpowder unit, and the rest all melle only. i kicked ass and killed 808 men, losing only 100 i think.

Not all units have bayonets... even if you have the technology.
As for Square formation, it won;t work if the unit is under a certain number, if you play at Small unit size you can't use it at all.

im playing at ultra unit size with full strength cossacks.
and if i research something, but have a ful stack prior, will they get it? because i have like 6-7 units of linei nfrantry part of a full stack, and id hate for them to be deprived of square formation or bayonets.

Yes, all units that can use the square formation or bayonets will be updated once you have the technology, it does not matter if they were created before or after the tech discovery.
It is just that some units never get bayonets like, Ranger types or some Light infantry later on, they do have other abilities and better accuracy and range however.

If they're a sword armed unit such as grenadiers and Dragons they will never have bayonets {carbines were considered too short to bother with} thus never use the square formation {which only works with bayonets .
You said they were "still using swords" which means no bayonets or square formation for them .
I believe socket bayonets are automatically attached from the start. Either that or my bayonet button disappears upon researching socket bayonets.

Cossacks don't use bayonets and square formation. They are some kind of light infantry with more men, having a range of 80 instead of 70.

ok...so cossacks no bayonets or square formation? >:( they are like the real bacbone of my army. damn. ok i guess this would be useful to kep open for people whodont know. thanks guys!
Myself, I kind of like the incongruity of a joke hinging on the grammar of a functionally dead ancient language combined with bouncing boobies in a forum signature.
Kudos etc. :sweatdrop:
Anyway, having an ingame mouseover or context file that would list which units can use which abilities later on in the technology tree would be marvellous. Rather irritating when I found my army of 'goons couldn't affix bayonnettes and CHARGE! Though, I could have sworn reading one of the history files about some revolutionary weapon designer who made carbines with extra length bayonnettes for carbines so... maybe that was just a bug.
