Thassalokratia-A Carthaginian AAR

https://img515.imageshack.us/img515/5589/introthassalocratia.jpg

We have been here for centuries. Ever since we fled our home, we have lived here. Fighting for every inch of land. Straining to survive this harsh world. We have succeeded. We live, we love, we enjoy. Many thanks to our powerful Navy. Thassalokratia is what we wish to achieve one day. And we will, lest our enemies don't achieve it first.......

(This is my second attempt at an AAR. The difficulty is H/M. I don't really keep myself locked into any soft of House rules. Just what feels right. Thanks in advance for reading)

Chapter 1-Gisco

It was strange. The sun was high, the day was a beautiful one, but
there was sorrow in Gisco's heart. He ran his hand along his steeds neck
and followed it to the tip of the nose. He gave it some oats with his other
hand.

"Today we shall battle my beautiful. Today we shall die too." Gisco whispered
in its ear.

The horse neighed. It was disagreeing with its master. Gisco took a step
back and looked it in the eyes.

"You think we should fight bravely? To the end?" Gisco whispered once more.

The horse made no motion this time. It stood still. Gisco felt a stirring in his
heart. He would fight bravely today. Even though the enemy army was
numberless, and his own barely over a few hundred. He would fight.

Gisco walked with confidence like he never knew he could have. His body
guard was sitting around, some playing dice, others chatting. There seemed
no to be no fear among the ranks.

"Am I the only one who fears to die?" Gisco thought to himself.

"Men, Get ready for battle. We fight today." Gisco said as he looked at his men.

"My lord, the Shofet will bring the army and relieve us. We should wait."
One of the men said to him.

"The Shofet should have been here months ago. Saddle your horses." Gisco replied Calmly.

There was commotion as the bodyguard, one by one started to get up
and put on their armor. It would take half an hour for them to be ready,
but that was ok, the spear men had to take time to assemble as well.

When all was said and done, Gisco sat atop his horse and watched the
spear men walk out of the city.
https://img23.imageshack.us/img23/1132/firstbattlegiscowatches.jpg

After that he himself marched out of the city and took up a position near the wall.
He gave a few moments for the horses and the men to rest. He took the time to
get a good look at his enemy.
https://img10.imageshack.us/img10/9275/firstbattlegiscolooksat.jpg

They numbered in the thousands. Mostly skirmisher cavalry from the nearby villages,
recruited by the Numidian king. They were still a much larger force and there
seemed no way of winning this fight.

Gisco blew his horn and raised his sword! "CHARGE!" He yelled and onward the
cavalry started galloping. He readied his spear and tightened his grip on the
reigns of the horse. As they neared the enemy they started to throw hundreds
of javelins at the body guard.
Behind them, the spearmen, couldn't keep up and were about halfway to the
enemy when the lines clashed.
https://img23.imageshack.us/img23/4918/firstbattlecalvarycharg.jpg

The battle was a mess, Gisco swung his sword left and right killing a few Numidians.
The armor of the bodyguard was keeping their numbers intact and the battle
seemed equal for a moment.
https://img23.imageshack.us/img23/9531/firstbattlecalvarymess.jpg

But then the Numidians flanked them, and routed the spearmen with their javelins.
The sound of horse and men was just unbearable to the young Gisco and he fled
back into the city. The skirmishers chased after him and gave a good volley of
javelins once more.

https://img10.imageshack.us/img10/7673/firstbattlegiscodies.jpg

His fate was sealed. Gisco fell off his horse when a javelin struck him in the
back. He landed on his side, shreeking in pain as he watched his horse gallop
away. He started to cough up blood and his mind lost focus. He looked up at
the sky and the clouds. It was so beautiful....He whispered something that no
one will ever hear and closed his eyes.

Hanno

https://img11.imageshack.us/img11/7103/didobuildingcarthage.jpg

Upon receiving the news of his brother, Hanno, immediately packed his things and
rushed to great city of Kart-Hadast. He got on his personal warship, and sailed towards
the setting sun. With him a few sailors and a couple close friends. When he arrived at
Carthage, he was greeted by many traders and sailors who knew him well. They offered
him a horse to ride to the palace and some food. He refused the food, but took the horse
and galloped through the city. As he reached the entrance to the palace he gave the horse
to a servant and hustled up the stairs.

Hanno, was 27 when he arrived at Kart-Hadast. He felt like he was 18. Full of live and fervor
for his country he was eager to be at this gathering of the council. At the top of the stairs
he was greeted by Mago and some other family.

After embracing each other and being silent for a moment in memory of their loved one they
walked inside to talk business.

In side the great hall there were hundreds of men. Some were chatting, others sitting silently.
When Mago walked into the room most of the men became silent and awaited the meeting to
begin.

Hanno was a bit surprised that they waited for him to start the meeting but nonetheless just
sat next to his brother Carthalo, and father, Mago.

"Thank you all for coming today." Mago began, "As you all know, Kart-Hadast lost a great man
to the Numidians. My son, Gisco, died bravely while fighting those Bastards. Today we must
decide what we must do. The floor is open."

Hamalcar stood up and spoke. "My fellow countrymen. We all grieve for the lost of a loved one,
but we must think clearly. The Numidians INSULT US! They come to our land, destroy our fields,
eat our flocks, and burn down our cities! They must be put into their correct spot! Let us pick a
man who can deliver the head of the king on a platter to us! Let us subjugate Africa and make it
fruitful for us!"

Bomilkar ha'Hamor stood and replied to Hamalcar. "My brother, I must agree with you on avenging
Gisco, but subjugate Africa? That is madness! That would take a decade! And another decade to
make it profitable! Thousands of men would have to die to achieve this. No, Let us take back Ippone
and Kill the king of the Numidians. But that is all."

After Bomilkar spoke there was silence for a few moments in the hall. Everyone knew Hamalcar the
next in line to be voted in for Shofet. Everyone knew that Bomilkar wanted that position. They
rivaled for years, but somehow Hamalcar took the lead and won the people over. Some say it was
because of his handsomeness. Bomilkar scared little children.

Mago stood and spoke this time. "Hanno shall go. He is smart and he has led armies before. This
will give him a chance to really prove..."

"Hanno?!" Hamalcar stood up in dissaprovement.

"Sit down Hamalcar. You disgrace me." Mago said to him calmly.
"This will give Hanno a chance to prove himself. Hanno Stand up."

Hanno stood up. When he heard his father say his name goosebumps ran all over his back. Sweat
appeared everywhere. His heart raced, both with over excitement and fear.

"Do you accept such a demanding ordeal?" Mago asked him.

"I.. I do Father. I will Avenge my brother." Hanno answered.

"You will do more than that. If i must, I agree with Hamalcar about conquering the Numidians. Yes,
it will be costly, but in the long run it will protect us from future raids and provide us with a safe
and secure bread basket."

Hanno heart jumped. Africa? All of it? He would be 40 when he returned home...

"My council members, my family, I will avenge Gisco. I will return victories. I will have scars that I
did not have before." Saying that, Hanno sat down.

A vote was cast on the topic and it came out clear that even though Hanno would lead the army,
he had made some enemies within his own family. That day Hanno was given plans for the Invasion
of Africa, maps, and the reigns to the largest army ever assembled by Carthage.

Before he left on his way the next day, Mago spoke to Hanno.

"My son. I chose you yesterday because you are fresh on the political floor. When I am gone, few men
will be powerful enough to stop ambitious men from ruining us with endless conquest. You must fight this
campaign. Return to Kart-Hadast a hero and an Avenger. I may not be alive then. As you know Hamalcar
will hate you for the rest of his life. He will be a problem for you. Do not be Naive. Now go son."

With that, Hanno and his army marched west towards the setting sun.

Ippone

Hanno stared at the walls of Ippone. Here his brother fought and
died bravely. Today he would avenge him. Hate and disgust burned
in his heart. He would kill the man who did this. He gripped his sword,
making sure it was there.
https://img23.imageshack.us/img23/4541/secondbattlehannostarin.jpg

Sending his men at the walls he waited patiently as they broke down the
walls. Today it would only be his cavalry fighting. Revenge will not be
sweet. Revenge would be very painful, and bloody. He knew the enemy
would be tough to fight.

Inside the city there was a few hundred well trained, well equipped Numidian
body guards, all ready to fight to the death. But they didn't have what
burned in Hanno's heart. They were fighting for there lives. He was fighting
for his brothers'. They had already won....
https://img15.imageshack.us/img15/3825/secondbattlehannomarchi.jpg

After breaking the walls Hanno marched just his own bodyguard into the
city. Today his sword and spear would get bloody. There was no fear in
his heart. That was for sure. Not today. Behind him stood shame and guilt
if he lost or fled, in front of him, an enemy who was ready to kill.

He blew his horn and there was a mad race to the center of the city,
where the enemy waited. He was the one of the first horses to reach
the enemy, where they were showered with javelins from the enemy.

https://img24.imageshack.us/img24/3122/secondbattlehannochargi.jpg

There was a huge clash between the lightly armed and quick horses of the
Native Africans and the finely bread huge warhorses of the bodyguard.

https://img22.imageshack.us/img22/4272/secondbattlefight1.jpg

The Warrior General swung his sword with great ferocity, always looking
for the enemy general. "What a coward he must be." Hanno thought to
himself. He killed a few men when he heard amidst the chaos that the
enemy General has fell of his horse and got trampled. Hanno laughed
really hard. His heart went mad. Blood was everywhere. The battle was
pure chaos.

"Onward my brave men!" Hanno yelled.

https://img22.imageshack.us/img22/1160/secondbattlehannokillin.jpg

All around him men on both sides were dieing. Always staying in
immediate danger Hanno had no time to actually command his men.
They would fight along his side. Near Hanno a horse jumped in fear and
neighed loudly.

https://img25.imageshack.us/img25/7342/secondbattlehoursejumpi.jpg

Much chaos ensued for a while. The enemies lack of armor did hurt
them badly. They started falling one after another until the last man died.
Hanno got of his horse and asked his men where the enemy General was.
When Hanno looked at him, he realized that he was alive.

The enemy general had blood all over him. His limbs were broken and scratched
and he looked like he was holding on from a single string. One of Hanno's body
guard unsheathed his sword and offered it to Hanno.

"No, I will keep him a live to keep him suffering." Hanno said. "He deserves worse. Bring me my best Surgeons."

https://img25.imageshack.us/img25/4624/muttines.jpg

Muttines coughed, blooding coming out of his mouth. He whispered something
that was not comprehensible.

Hanno got on his knees and listened to him.

"Do you want to know how he died?" Muttines said, barely able to keep his
eyes open.

Hanno was enraged by the way this man didnt fear him. He spit in his
face and ordered the surgeons to keep him alive.

-------------------

After the chaos of the battle and when things were quite Hanno
re-established order in the city. No citizen was looted or hurt. Hanno
was speaking to the local officials who were in charge when Gisco was
alive when he was urgently called.

"My lord, you must see this." A bodyguard called him. "Its Gisco."

Hanno ran, following the man who called him until he saw it.

Gisco, on the ground, in the fetal position, a javelin in his back. Hanno
moved closer only to realize there were feces everywhere. The enemy had
a good time disgracing this brave man. Hanno fell to his knees and took
Giscos rotting hand. Tears were streaming from his eyes. He let out loud
wail for his brother. He was there until after the setting of the sun.

"My lord, we must go back into the city." Another bodyguard called Hanno.

"Why, I want to stay here, with my brother." Hanno replied.

"Its Muttines lord, he is well and wishes to speak to you."

Hanno looked at the bodyguard. Hate was written all over his face. He got
up and walked back into the city.....

Brothers

Hamalcar reached Mastia earlier this morning. He had much to say
to Hasdrubal. Reaching the city wasnt difficult. The whole city revolved
around its port so the road was well paved and protected. When Hasdrubal
heard of Hamalcars arrival he quickly prepared a fine meal as a welcoming.

As two brothers neared each other they got of their horses and ran to each
other. They embraced and gave their greetings. They had much to talk
about, not seeing each other for years. Hasdrubal was assigned by the
council to manage Spain, which kept him very busy, and Hamalcar had to
defend Sicily from Heiro, the king of Syracuse.

They were very close to each other before parting. Riding, sailing, playing
together every day. They grew a great fondness that doesn't happen very
often. Soon they reached the palace entrance.

"What brings you to my humble home brother?" Hasdrubal said, not being
able to withhold his smile.

"Humble? Your palace is much better than mine, Iberia is rich and beautiful.
Sicily, is well, Sicily." Hamalcar said with a bit of disgust finishing the sentence.
"Mago has insulted me in Kart-Hadast. They elected Hanno to lead the army.
It should have been me, I have plenty of experience for it."

"What is it you would like me to do brother?" Hasdrubal said without hesitation.
He always agreed with Hamalcar. In fact he even defended him whenever he
was wrong as well.

"One day, I will be Shofet. I need to know that I have your support." Hamalcar
said sitting down for the meal.

"Support for what? Who would dare stand against you?" Hasdrubal replied, being
a bit puzzled.

"Its not that, Its just there are some policies that i believe in that some
of the council doesn't."

"You have my word. I am your loyal friend and brother." Hasdrubal said to
him. Hasdrubal has always been a bit naive. Being the youngest in a royal
family, he didn't always receive the attention he wanted, allowing Hamalcar
to exploit this. Nonetheless, Hamalcar did love his brother.

"Good, I'm glad I have you brother." Hamalcar said frankly.

They went on talking into the night. They talked about politics, trade, Rome,
Iberia, Africa, and the wealth that could be extracted from it. In the morning
Hamalcar left for Sicily, being assured that he had support somewhere in the family.

Coward

Hanno walked into the tent that Muttines was in. Muttines turned
quickly to meet Hanno's gaze. The tent smelt of blood and sweat.
Some of the bodyguard were upset that this man was still alive.
Hanno sat next to the wounded man on a makeshift chair next to the cot.

"Danel, leave us." Hanno said to his friend and bodyguard.

"Yes sir." Danel responded and promptly left the tent.

"Speak dog, what do you wish to tell me." Hanno said to Muttines.
He poured himself some wine.

"He charged at us foolishly. We numbered no more that 3000 light
cavalry. He charged us with about 200. Head on. He was actually
first in line. I saw him fight. Did you know him?" Muttines was enjoying
this, rubbing in whatever dignity he had into Hannos face.

Hanno looked away for a moment. He didn't return his gaze to him right
away. He looked as if he was remembering something. "He was my brother."

"Explains a lot. You fought well today, I give y..." Muttines started to
reply but was cut of by Hanno.

"How did he die." Hanno said, his voice shaking a little.

"That was a bit rude. Do remember you are speaking to a King."
Muttines said looking at Hanno with proud eyes.

Hanno moved so quickly he frightened himself. He leaned over Muttines
and clutched him by his fine cloths and shook him.

"TELL ME HOW MY BROTHER DIED!" Hanno yelled, enraged at the
arrogance of this man. A vein was vividly seen on his forehead.

"We flanked him, he fled with a handful of bodyguard. I ordered a
volley and they all fell. His horse ran, but we captured it. It nearly killed
me today by trampling me. Ironic isn't it." Muttines laughed a bit at the end.

Hanno's face turned red, little beads of sweat started appearing on his
forehead. He let go of his grip and walked over the the other end of the tent.

"He was a coward." Muttines finished speaking.

The words pierced Hanno straight to the heart. He was completely
speechless for the moment.

"You come into my country, take our precious fields, build your palaces
and temples on our sacred ground for years. You enlist our young men
into your armies to fight for your greed. So that you can control somewhere
else to do the same there. No, I the King of Numidia shall not allow you to
do that to my people." Muttines continued.

Hanno stepped out of the tent to get some fresh air. The sky was clear
and you could see so many stars.
"Is everything alright?" Danel asked.

"Yes, just fine." Hanno replied and turned back into the tent.

Hanno stood above Muttines and spoke. "I will keep you alive. You will
witness many atrocities in your lands. I will extract all the wealth from
your people. I will burn your cities, destroy your temples, kill your priests,
disgrace your women, kill your fleeing men. No one will be spared. People
will understand what it means to defy the power of Kart-Hadast. And when
is all said and done, I will take you to Kart-Hadast to sell you to the slave
traders, where you will row a boat for the REST OF YOUR PITIFUL AND
FILTHY LIFE!"

Hanno had to take a deep breath after saying that. Muttines nodded and
turned around in his cot to stop facing Hanno.

Hanno looked at the man for a moment and then left the tent. He still had
much to do. Before the night was over he had buried his brother in the
exact spot that he died on.

Yes, i wanted to keep suspense within the story by setting up the feud early and letting it build. Also creating a multiple point of view within the aar so that the good guys dont always seem like the good guys and vice versa.

Eshmunamash

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/8071/eshemanash.jpg

My name is Eshmunamash. I grew up in the village of Kirtan. When I was a boy, my father taught me many things. He taught me about the great empires that existed around us, he taught me how to read and write, how to ride, but most importantly how to wield a sword. My father fought for the Kart-Hadast in a land called Iberia. There he was promoted many times for his bravery. My only hope is that I would be able to make him proud.

We marched to meet the enemy in the fields around Kirtan. The sun was high in the sky, scorching the earth. I marched ahead of the line. I was fearless. Who were these men who took our king? When my father heard of us going to war with Kart-Hadast, he broke inside. He stopped eating, wore a burlap sack and put ashes on his head. It was such a shame for me, I loved him. I was quickly drafted to serve under the local ruler and we marched to meet the enemy.

When we came upon the great host, many men were terrified of how their armor gleamed in the sun. They were a site to behold, but i didn't fear them. The greatest weapon was a mans heart. The greatest armor was a mans fearlessness. I was dressed in pure greatness today.

We got near the enemy and formed our lines. We heard the our leader blow his horn and we charged the enemy lines. They let loose their volley of javelins. I dodged them and hit the enemy with my shield first.
https://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9956/maureinfantrycharge.jpg

I was sad to say few men followed me. But still, i prevailed in killing a man. My first kill. I didn't have time to celebrate as i had to parry an attack from the enemy spear man. These men fought strangely, locked in formation, they protected each other with their shields, unlike our way of fighting. It didn't matter, another man fell to my sword.

More of my brothers charged now, seeing my bravery. I swung and blocked to the best of my ability. but soon men started fleeing and i turned around to rally them.

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/9184/eshemanashturningaround.jpg

No one even heard me. To my great regret I turned an ran too, only to be stopped by what look liked green beasts. They looked terrifiying.

I quickly knocked one down while he wasn't looking. "Who said war was fair?" I told myself. It was something my father taught me.

https://img12.imageshack.us/img12/3674/duel1w.jpg
We looked at each other fiercely and then we began to fight.
https://img18.imageshack.us/img18/7813/duel3.jpg
He swung first. His great axe coming close to my face as I leaned backwards to avoid the blow. I felt the wind of it on my face.
I didn't wait a moment to attack next going for the neck with my sword. He didn't even know what hit him.

He fell to the ground with a gasp. He looked up at me for a moment and then his life slipped away.
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/7063/fallencarthie.jpg

I turned around to see that the enemy line was advancing upon us, enveloping us.
https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/2449/eshamanashfleeing.jpg
I was sad to say my heart faltered like the rest of the men and I ran. I ran past the green beasts only to realize we were being flanked once more, this time by the heavy cavalry. These were the Gods of war. I ran and watched as they charged our brothers.
https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/4088/godsofwar.jpg

It was as if they sky was darkening for them. Truly a terrifying look. What was more terrifying was that they were riding further, closer to us. I was running along some archers when they neared us. One of the horses was frightened and trampled the man next to me.
https://img12.imageshack.us/img12/2212/godsofwar2.jpg
I fell back on the ground as i watched the man look at me, he begged me to help, but my mind told me to run. So I turned my back to him, my brother being left for the ground to absorb. It wasn't long when the Gods of war caught up to me as well. I look back to see a man dressed in beautiful clothing, swing his sword at me. He must be in charge of all other Gods.
https://img12.imageshack.us/img12/8735/hannokillingeshemanash.jpg

He stabbed me in the back, a wound most shameful to my people and I fell hard on the ground. I yelled with my final breath, "Father how could I win?! I was killed by the God of war himself!" With that I took my last look at this wretched world and drifted away.

Kirtan

The streets of Kirtan weren't dusty today. No, they were sticky and moist with the blood of its residents. Thousands of warriors and citizens died by the hands of the their enemies. Only the young and the very old lived. Hanno made sure of that. He walked up the main street, if you could call it that to the main lodge of the village. There was a strong stench of burning flesh and a tower of smoke where Hannos soldiers were burning the dead.

Hanno stopped for a moment and look up at the sky. A single vulture was hovering above the village. He watched it hover for a time and then continued into the center of the village. Essentially it was the market for the city but announcements were made here also. If it wasn't bad enough that the townspeople had to witness the death of their own men, and then watch anyone of fighting age get massacred, they were summoned to the center of the village.

Hanno, followed by two bodyguards on each side walked to the stocks he prepared for Muttines. Stripped naked, Muttines was forced to walk through the streets of his own people, shamed for life, only to be beaten mercilessly by men of the elite African infantry. Such was the fate of anyone who stood in the way of Kart-Hadast.

"Enough, bring him back to the tent, have the surgeons stitch him back up." Hanno said. Despite the fact that he hated the man, Hanno regretted telling him that he would keep him alive for the conquest of Numidia. Guilt lingered in his heart for a moment, until he remembered Gisco. Pain tore a deep hole in his heart, for he missed his little brother.

Two soldiers dragged him back along the bloody streets. Hanno watched, disgusted with himself for a moment.

"Do not think I will hesitate hurting any of you if you dare to cross me. Let it be known that this city has payed its debt to Gisco." Hanno spoke to the townspeople.

Hanno looked at the townspeople. Old women and children were the majority of the crowd, he did not dare think what was happening to the younger women at the moment. Still, this was war. He hated himself today. He was a governor at heart, maybe a conqueror, not a coldblooded murderer. He started to walk back to his tent when he saw a few soldiers surrounding a man.

Hanno started jogging over to see what was going on. He was pretty sure he killed all the men who lived in the city.

"Get up you," Speaking to the man his soldiers knocked down. "Get away from him." Hanno yelled at the group as he neared.

"Who is this?" Hanno asked his men.

"I don't know lord. We saw him nearing the city from those caves. We sent a few horsemen and captured him." They answered.

"Speak you, If you wish to live. What are you doing here, do you not know that this city has just been cleansed of its male population?" Hanno said harshly, but the latter part he said with disgust toward himself.

"Do you know it is Illegal to kill a citizen of Kart-Hadast without trial?" The man spoke with some sort of accent, but nonetheless in the Punic language.

"You are no citizen of Kart-Hadast, prepare to meet your relatives in hell." A soldier exclaimed back at him and kicked him to the ground again.

"Get away from him!" Hanna saying while getting between the stranger and his soldier. Hanno raised his hand as a threat to the soldier and the soldier backed off.

"Follow me to my tent, it is much cooler in there." Hanno said to the man.

The soldiers started following Hanno but he motioned them off. After a walking a distance the tent, Hanno learned that this man served under Mago in the Iberian wars earning his right as a true citizen. He even managed to tell an anecdote where He saved Mago's life earning him the name Savior within the ranks. The story seemed to good to be true, and Hanno wouldn't have believed it if Mago hadn't told him the story when he was young as a bed time story.

Inside the tent Hanno learned that Akbar, which was the mans name, had a son who had fought in the battle just a few weeks ago.

"I only ask that you leave us be, as we are citizens and have done no harm. My son has only done his duty." Akbar said.

Hanno pondered a moment, realizing this might be his only chance to raise his spirits and spoke.

"You have my Vow that I will leave you be."

"Thank you lord. My only wish is that you would be able to meet me son. He was badly wounded, and left for dead in the battle. He would have died but I found him that night and carried him to the caves. A sharp cut on his back is what knocked him out, a shameful wound, but his sword was bloody, showing that he tried."

"Why did you not participate in the battle?" Hanno asked, exercising his curiosity now.

"I have fought many battles on the side of the Kart-Hadast to know what they fight like. Our men stood no chance. No bravery or fierce charge could have broken your lines. Cunning could, maybe, but that is only if the enemy wasn't smart, and I do not think that of you." Akbar said sipping wine for the first time in years and continued. "No, when I heard King Muttines declare war against your people, I burned my cloths, put ash in my hair and stopped eating. He is a stubborn dead fool."

"He is stubborn and foolish, but not dead. I am keeping him alive." Hanno answered Akbar. "I should have killed him though.

"Please, allow me to do it!" Akbar said as a serious joke.

They talked for a while, enjoying conversations about Mago and telling anecdotes of all sorts until Hanno asked Akbar what he wanted to for a while now.

"Akbar, what do you plan on doing when Numidia is no longer Numidia?"

"I don't know." Akbar said, focusing on something on the floor.

"Come, join my ranks, I will promote you to my bodyguard and you will be treated fairly." Hanno finally saying his proposal.

"I fear I cannot. My son is still healing from his wounds and by the time he is well, you will be very far away." Akbar replied dipping his finger in the wine.

"Then you can stay here and manage this village. I will place you in charge of everything. You will answer only to me and Mago. You will be given funds to rebuild this town, make it prosperous, what do you say?" Hanna replied quickly.

"I am not of noble birth. The people know this." Akbar said solemnly.

"You are a Citizen of Kart-Hadast, that is more noble than being the highest king in all of Numidia." Hanno replied once again, very quickly. He was always good at debating and thinking of answers quickly. It was what made him a good governor and politician in Lepki.

Akbar was silent for a moment, thinking of the possibility and the responsibility. Then he spoke.

"I am your loyal servant."

"Good, now lets speak of rebuilding this village from what it is to what it could and will be." Hanno said happily.

They spent the rest of the day and some of the evening speaking funds, advisers which would come from Kart-Hadast itself, and other things of how to manage a city until they became good friends. And so began not only the conquest of Numidia, but also the rebuilding of Numidia in a civilized state.

Sicily

Hamalcar realized his relationship with Mago has been deteriorating since their father died, but he was sure he could get his point across. He had sailed from Spain to Ippone, stopping for a week to pay his respects to his nephew, then sailed to Sicily only to find out that the Roman republic has laid siege to Messana. This was a direct violation of the peace treaty they had made years before. War was inevitable.
https://img23.imageshack.us/img23/2160/sicilyrsm.jpg

Hamalcar had always hated the Romans. They were a sneaky backstabbing people who kept no promises. This was all the proof he needed. He spent a few days preparing things for war, but not having the extensive armories and manpower of Kart-Hadast he could only do so much by himself. He left his best General in charge, just in case something happened while he was gone once more, and Sailed to Kart-Hadast.

In Kart-Hadast he called a meeting of the Senate to discuss the matters at hand. Mago was present, as was Bomilkar, but neither said anything to their little brother. Hamalcar didn't care. He had enough support in the senate. After everyone gathered, Mago stood and spoke.

"My dear country men, it seems as we have surrounded ourselves with potential enemies. The Roman republic has broken our treaty and has besieged Messana. Let us not be rash in our decision making. The floor is open."

Hamalcar didn't waste one moment to silence and stood to speak right away. "My brothers, my countrymen, are treaties meant to be broken? Are we that weak that we would allow our foes to break the treaties and not have them pay for it? Are we that sick with greed that we fear a war with them? I say, Raise an army, give me generalship, and let me crush those backstabbing fat men who sit in their baths all day. Give me the power to lead our glorious men to victory against our foe, and you will not regret it."

There was much murmur after this remark, no one seemed to have wanted to take the floor right away until Bomilkar spoke. "My dear brother, where do you plan to get the funds for such a glorious army. Our treasury is already wasted from the conquest of Numidia. If we begin a war with the Roman republic, we would lose half of our trading income causing us to go bankrupt."

What Bomilkar said was true, they were in financial trouble from the first army, and a second would bankrupt them. Bomilkar was always a pragmatist, never seeking risks or glory. He tedious in all the work he did, making sure everything was perfect and in order. This made him a good administrator, but not a leader though. He feared blood from birth and was considered a coward during the Iberian wars for not being a risk taker.

Mago spoke next. "Hamalcar, I understand Sicily is under threat, but maybe would should try to appease the Romans. I presume they only take Messana because of all the pirating that goes on around that area. King Heiro hates the Romans just as much as he hates us and would probably go to war with them as soon as they take it. They don't have the man power to besiege Syriakousa, and if they did it would take them a few years before they could even assault it. Lets calm down and write them a letter. I do not want to lose a trading partner in this time of our need."

Hamalcar was enraged. Here he was begging for assistance from his brothers and they were turning him down. His heart sank from disbelief. He had only one choice. He stood up and spoke once more.
"If you think that I am a coward, you are wrong. The Romans are a real threat. They have disciplined armies that dominate the region. If you do not wish to help me, I wish to be reassigned. I would like to be moved to Iberia."

"Brother, do not speak so rashly, we will help you, but you must understand the situation. We lack the funds for.." He didnt finish his sentence before he was interrupted.

"I wish to be reassigned to Gader." Hamalcar spoke, calmly, but a bit edgy.

"As you wish brother." Mago replied, he let out a big sigh at the end.

A vote was cast and before the day was done Hamalcar was already on a merchant ship headed for Gader. He leaned against the wooden railing of the ship and looked out at the sea. His desire for power grew even stronger that day. "I will make you pay for this Mago. I vow this to you." He said to himself.

Siga

After installing a local ruler in Kirtan, Hanno's army was once again on the move. We moved further west, towards the setting of the sun. There was a large city called Siga there which was our next target.

My name is Philisor. I grew up in a noble family in Atiqa. From birth I was put into school to become an adviser to the Shofet, but my heart was elsewhere. Ever since I was a little boy I played with the boys in the street. We played this game called fight, where we armed ourselves with sticks and what not and we hit each other until one team ran. My father always told me to stop playing games and to do my schooling. He always told me that these games I played would never help me. He was wrong.

https://img22.imageshack.us/img22/4243/philisor.jpg

Here I stood, on the top of the hill looking down on a very large host of men, marching at us. I was my units first man. In charge of about a thousand men. After finishing school, against my fathers wishes, i enlisted into the royal officer academy where I learned to fight and lead men. My men stood on top of the hill with me, awaiting any orders I issued.

The host neared us and we could hear their native tongue . I didn't understand it, but I assumed they spoke encouragements to each other and insults to us. It didn't matter though. In war the sword and spear was the best insulter.

The enemy then charged our center, which I was in and battle began.
I stabbed a man right away and stood my ground.
https://img23.imageshack.us/img23/6708/philisordefendinghill.jpg
These men were very brave and skilled warriors, but we had many advantages over them. I swung my sword and killed another.
https://img19.imageshack.us/img19/9144/philisorcharging.jpg
My men watched and fought along side of me as I killed these men. The next moment, the enemy charged me and almost knocked me down. I managed to get him off his feet and he looked at me, filled with hate.
https://img10.imageshack.us/img10/7338/philisorknockeddown.jpg
I quickly gathered myself and prepared to parry any blow.
https://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8410/philisorfighting.jpg
I swung my sword low, going for his belly, but he blocked it and attempted to swing.
https://img23.imageshack.us/img23/3803/philisorgoingforkill.jpg
He missed and i raised my sword high now going for the kill.
https://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1104/philisorstabbinghigh.jpg
I ended the life of that man, but another took his place quickly, realizing i was in charge of the unit by the look of my armor. I feared this man even less than I did the last. He went down quickly after I gutted him. All around me was chaos. Lead bullets from the enemy were flying above our heads, shouting, screaming the clang of metal verse metal resounded on this hill. Another man fell by my sword. Then enemy seemed to run. I watched as they ran down the hill a bit and then they stopped to rest. I ordered no charge yet.
https://img16.imageshack.us/img16/8752/philisorwatchingrout.jpg
Just as i thought, after a few minutes of both sides catching their breath, the enemy charged again.
https://img19.imageshack.us/img19/2513/secondchargeofnu.jpg
This charge lasted a lot less time than the last. I swung my sword at the first Numidian who came at me and killed him.
https://img16.imageshack.us/img16/8059/philisorstabbing.jpg
Blood gushed from his face as he fell down. I looked for my next target and chose him quickly. Will all of my remaining strength I charged him.
https://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4018/philisorfinalkill.jpg
He didn't even know what hit him. He fell quickly and the enemy started fleeing. I gave him a quick death, cutting his neck open and letting the life slip away from him.
The day was ours, my unit lost nearly a hundred me, but the enemy lost even more. I'm sorry father but you were wrong, those games did help me, they helped me a lot.

If you get a ctd after a battle, or if you ctd before you even get into it, you can use auto_resolve attacker if attacking or auto_resolve defender if defending.

Unless you want to roleplay them having a bad day at the battle every once in a while :whip:

Dude if you fought a battle and won but it ctded then go back and if you're attacking type "auto_win attacker" and if you're defending type "auto_win defender" then roleplay you're losses from the last battle by disbanding units. Remember if the enemy sallies you're the one defending. Great job.

Lilibeo

https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/8121/familytree2hamalcar2nd.jpg

Kanmi shuddered as the days events played through his head. In charge of Lilibeo when Hamalcar left, he knew his fate was sealed. His was sick to his stomach, looking back as the burning city, still hearing cries from the innocent there. In his arms he clutched a boy, who at the age of 10 is witnessing atrocities that no young boy should.

Several other boats were racing away from the city. 6 or 7 to possibly, but Kanmi wouldn't know until all the smoke was gone. Another boat sailed up to his and a man from the second boat spoke to Kanmi.

"We didn't find her lord, she must have been in her Villa." Maharbaal said to Kanmi.

The words pierced Kanmi even more. "Turn the boat around, were going to go get her!" Kanmi yelled at his first mate, never letting go of the boy he held.

"Sir, that is madness, the Romans control the coast, we'll be lucky if we get to Kart-Hadast alive! We need to sail as fast as we can from here!"

"Polymede's blood is on my hands! How will I live now!?" Kanmi yelled back at his first mate.

The first mate moved quickly up to Kanmi, so that he could speak some sense into him.

"Sir, we have the boy, Hamalcar will forgive you. He is a good man. WE MUST PROTECT THE BOY." The first man yelled at Kanmi, being just a few inches from his face.

There was a pause, and in that moment you could see the disgust in Kanmi's eyes. He nearly fell over, if it weren't for the boy he held in his hands. He was standing behind the boy, his hands on the shoulders of the lad. He wasn't exactly holding him, just making sure that the boy would not go anywhere.

Kanmi sat on a crate, as the boat rocked him. The boy just stood motionless, as if he was a statue. Even with the boat rocking, he did not try to move to balance himself, he just stood there, unmovable.

----
In a week, they arrived at Gader. News of the fall of Lilibeo had already reached the ears of Hamalcar. He personally waited at the city's port every day for it to come. When the ships came, Hamalcar waited until everyone was off, searching the faces of the crowds for his son and wife. He saw Kanmi, walking behind Hamalcar II, still having his hands on the boys shoulders. When Kamni neared Hamalcar, he fell to his knees and cried like a child.

Kanmi and Hamalcar had been good friends since they were toddlers. Some would say even best friends. The boy just stood there, only his 2 little eyes examining the surroundings around him, while the rest of his body motionless. He fists clenched so hard that his nails were cutting into the palm of his hand.

Hamalcar, with tears in his eyes spoke, his voice shaking. "Where is my wife." It wasn't a question. It was a demand. Everyone stood still, only Kanmi sobbed at Hamalcar's feet.

"WHERE IS MY WIFE! WHERE!? WHERE IS SHE!??!" Hamalcar yelling in his Punic tongue. Many of the city's residents spoke Lusitanian, and were wondering what this was all about.

Then, Hamalcar too fell to the ground and cried like a child, next to Kanmi. The crowd was a bit uneasy to leave at first, but eventually everyone left. Only the child stood there watching two grown men cry all of their tears out onto the pavement in the port of Gader.

A bodyguard of Hamalcar later came to take the boy into the local government house to clean up the boy and give him something to eat. The boy cleaned himself, and ate whatever they gave him. The servants were surprised at the capacity of the boys hunger. That night, while lying in bed, not being at able to sleep, Hamalcar II thought of what happened to his mother. Enraged, he got out of bed and followed the noise in the silent halls to where he thought he heard his father.

He walked up to the door and heard two men speaking, Hamalcar's and Kanmi's voices were the two he heard. Taking a breath, the boy walked in. Hamalcar looked at the boy, but said nothing.

Then the boy spoke. "When age permits, I will use fire and steel to arrest the destiny of Rome." The words came out so smoothly, without hate or disgust, almost innocently, but they were clear as day. The boy meant what he said.

Gader

Gader, a city that owed its allegiance to Thassalokratia of Kart-Hadast, that payed its taxes to this city, for what? Protection from its own cousins in blood, the Lusitanian? Gader fell to Hamalcar's Father many years ago during the First Iberian War. He treated the city fairly, after seeing the soldiers bravery in battle, and allowed its independence, so long that it payed its taxes and offered its young to fight in the many wars that the city of Kart-Hadast had participated in.

That was about to change today, or so hoped Hamalcar. Officially, not in charge, Hamalcar had hoped to win over the council in the city. He waited patiently, going over what he wanted to say in his head as the council gathered. It was a few days since his beloved wife Polymede, died, but he was making his recovery. He didn't allow himself to get attached to many things. It wasn't that he didn't miss her, its that he was good at forgetting. He kept himself busy with many things.

The council gathered, and there was much chatter from the men. Hamalcar looked over the faces and tried to remain relaxed and casual. He was always good at that. His good looks allowed people to look at him and awe, sometimes winning them over just by looking at them. Now that he was single, he could use that to sway the men over with a proper marriage.

Avaro, a tall man who looked more like a warrior than a politician and manager of a city looked at Hamalcar and spoke. "Hamalcar, you have gathered us to this meeting with what purpose, speak wisely, as we despise fools."

Before Hamalcar had a chance to speak, another man stood, this one, shorter, and looked as if he could out drink you any day. His hair was wild, his beard untrimmed, yet he did not look violent at all. Rather, he had quite the silly smile on his face. The man spoke as well, but not to Hamalcar, instead he turned to his colleges and said, "He wishes to tell us we need to increase taxes so that he can have a much bigger vineyard than all of you, after all we know that a citizen of Kart-Hadast is so much more important than we, the council of Gader."

There was laughter amongst the men. Some turned to Hamalcar to see his reaction, only to be disappointed that Hamalcar was laughing himself. This time Hamalcar stood and spoke, letting his crowd winning silver tongue work its magic.

"Men of Gader, My story isn't long, but it sure isn't a pleasant one. I was born in Kart-Hadast. Raised in a royal family, I was the 3rd oldest son in the family. Realizing that I was in a disadvantages position, I studied hard, fought hard, and worked hard. But that means nothing with no support. My brother, Mago, has insulted me many times, the last time it killed my wife and scarred my son."

He paused for a moment to see the expressions on the faces of the men. He saw that he caught most of their attention, and now he could say what he really wanted to say.

"I wish to live a life where I know I did the right thing. That I helped the right people. Let me help you. As you all know that you have a fixed tax which you owe Kart-Hadast every 3 months. If you give me the power of a governor, I could lower the taxes with my authority. It would completely change the setting in which you live in. The poor could feed their family, the merchants, bring more cargo without paying more, and you my friends," He paused again after saying the word 'friends', for he did not know how they would react, but seeing no disgusted faces in the crowd he continued, "you my friends, will keep more of your money to outgrow my vineyard, which is still in its stage of infancy."

Hamalcar let the words sink in. It was like being at a foreign land and being served a strange dish. You would put a small portion on your eating utensil, and put it slowly in your mouth, letting it swirl around in your mouth before you chewed and finally swallowed it. You would either politely smile, and keep eating it, knowing that you hate it, or, you would continue eating it with great joy, realizing there is more to food than what you thought there was.

For the men of the council, it was the later. The crowd was won. Hamalcar smiled with his success. He spent the day treating the men of the council with a great feast. Wild boars have been caught and cooked over a pit for these men. Endless vats of wine were served until the men all fell into a great stupor.
--------

The next day, Hamalcar was given the title of Governor of Gader. He personally wrote a letter to Mago in front of the men and sent it off to Kart-hadast, stating that the taxes would be lowered. He spent the latter part of the day talking of improvements that could be made in this city and province. He knew, that without taxes he would need another source of income. For that he offered making a clearing in the center of the city and creating a much larger Bazaar.
https://img8.imageshack.us/img8/6844/bazaar.jpg

The men liked the idea, following him as he walked the streets and talked about rebuilding this great city. He even ventured to say that all Kart-Hadast owned lands, which were not being used at all, could be given to merchants and businessmen to exploit. Much happened that day as businessmen, both wealthy and the not so wealthy poured out much of their treasury buying from the great land grant which Hamalcar had enacted.
https://img11.imageshack.us/img11/4133/landgrant.jpg

Avaro had become good friends with Hamalcar, seeing that he was wise in his management and was very open handed. Many other men of the council started trusting his as well. Soon the whole province began to adore Hamalcar. This was was just the beginning. His looks would take him even further.

Well, back then people got married for political reasons, and Hamalcar could marry one of the daughters of the men of the council in order to get a blood relation. Thats what I meant.

Lixus and Muttines

Another restless night has slipped past Hanno. He got up out of bed, dropping his exhausted feet on the floor of his tent. Getting dressed he took a peek outside. It was still dark, but one could tell that the dawn was coming. In the distance he could see Lixus, a city of the Numidians.

Hanno ached everywhere. He felt old, worn out, and helpless. He lost a lot of weight and was barely getting any sleep. His long beard, untrimmed, made him look worse than a beggar. Dressed in his full panalopy of war he woke Danel with his stirring.

"Go back to bed, its too early." Danel said, half asleep.

"Danel, I need you to do me a favor today." Hanno whispered, getting on his knees next to Danel's cot.

Danel, getting up and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, looked at Hanno and his feeble body.

"Anything for you friend. You know that." Starting to wake up.

"Today, you will lead the army against the city. I cannot, I feel as if im cursed." Hanno plead.

Danel looked at Hanno and sighed, Hanno looked terrible, not the man he knew before this expedition.

"Ok my friend, I will, but let me sleep for a bit longer." Danel said while falling back into his warm bed.

"Thank you." Hanno said. He then walked out of the tent to talk to the men who were on guard duty.

---------------------------------------

The sun was at the peak of its power when the rams finally hit the wall. The battle had started. Hanno took off his heavy armour, being able to relax his exhausted muscle. He knew what he had to do today. Leaving only the belt for his sword, he grabbed Gisco's sword and started walking to the center of the campout, where Muttines was being held.

Muttines was chained in stockes and held in the center of the campsite at all time, for fear of his escape attempt. Soldiers often hurled insults at him, but Hanno made sure he was properly clothed and fed. In all actually, Muttines ate better than Hanno.

After the slaughter at Kirtan, Hanno's health began fading. He tried his best to not show it to the troops, and for the most part he hid it well. Slaughtering was not the business of Hanno. Many a men had died to his sword. So many nights he woke up in his cold sweat, only to realize that the dead were just a dream. And then there was Muttines. He felt bad for the man. He had such pride in him, he just couldn't stand holding him hostage anymore. He needed to kill him. He wanted to, in front of the troops, but that would be unjust.

That is why he was going to kill him now. Muttines stirred as he saw Hanno walking to him with a sword in his hand. Muttiness stood as straight as he could, hands at his side, looking into the distance, ready to go.

"I understand, but please kill me quickly." Muttines said calmly.

Hanno walked behind Muttines and with a loud thud the stocks came free. Muttines jumped from the shock and then fell to the ground. Hanno threw Gisco's sword at Muttines' feet. Muttines looked at the sword and then at Hanno, still a bit shocked at the days events.

"Get up, we fight today. Man to man. If you kill me, you are free. There is no one here to stop you from running." Hanno said, pulling out his own sword from his belt.

Muttines grabbed the sword and jumped to his feet. Realizing there was no shield and armour protecting Hanno he smiled. He had met a fair man.

"Why do you do this my friend, you could have killed me so easily."

"Never mind that, fight me."

Both men were circling each other as they looked into each others eyes. Hanno took the initiative and lunged at Muttines. His body was sore, his mind, blurred with exhausted, he missed his target and fell to the ground after Muttines dodged his lunge with ease. Muttines seeing his opportunity, hit Hanno with the flat part of his sword over the head. Hanno let out a "Ouch.." and then went blank to the world.
----------------

"HANNO! WAKE UP! PLEASE!"

Hanno looked up, and then dropped his head again because of the pain. Danel was shaking him ferociously.

"Im fine, stop that." Hanno, said with a bit of disappointment.

"Lord, Muttines, he escaped!" Danel saying to Hanno.

"That he did." Hanno said while getting up. Danel helped his to his feet.

"Should we send riders?" Danel said to Hanno, getting a bit impatient.

Hanno realized that he was in his own tent, lying in his own bed. His sword was in its sheath, and Gisco's was lying next to the bed.

"No, im sure he left hours ago. We'll talk about this tommorow." Hanno saying that as he looked outside to realize it was evening. Hanno smiled. For the first time in a year or so. He smiled.

"Now lets drink to our success, Danel. Let us celebrate." Hanno saying to Danel with such happiness that Danel himself was surprised.

"Lord.." Danel started speaking.

"No, today we get drunk with wine until we pass out." Hanno stopped Danel.

And that is what they did. Hanno fell asleep in his cot and slept well into the next day. He never slept better.

War and Peace

Hamalcar stood on the balcony of his home, overseeing his son, learning swordplay.

"Good! Now with the left!" Kanmi was yelling at the boy, parrying his blows.

Since sicily, Kanmi rarely left the boys side, protecting and overseeing him in this strange new land. Now, he was teaching him to fight, to avenge his mother.

"Again, don't you dare give up!" Kanmi yelled again at the boy.

Standing on top of his balcony, sipping his wine, he was interrupted by a messenger. Giving him a letter from Kart-Hadast, the messenger stepped back and bowed.

Hamalcar opened it and read it to himself. After reading the contents of the letter Hamalcar rushed inside and threw the letter into the a fire. He sat on his elaborately decorated couch and told a servant to call all the nobles of the city. Outside he could still here his son attacking Kanmi with all that the boy could.

"Good, at least I have something to look forward to in this world." Hamalcar thought to himself.

-------------------------------

That evening the nobles all arrived at Palace and waited for Hamalcar to say what he needed. They all had great respect for what he did to their city. Within only a couple of years the city was flourishing. The streets were repaved, a new bigger port was built, trade routes were well protected, and after hearing of how low taxes were people from all over Iberia flocked to live under such benevolence.

"My dear friends," Hamalcar started, not pausing after saying friends. "My brother in Kart-hadast has negotiated a peace treaty with the men who killed my wife! This dishonors me greatly, as It was my hope to raise the whole of Italy to the ground. Now, I just have to sit here and let those bastards go unpunished."

He paused, and looked at his crowd. They had great respect for him, and the fact that he never spoke of his dead wife meant that this was something he felt seriously about. They all were looking at him intently.

"My son though, he vowed to me, that he would arrest the destiny of Rome when age permit. I understand that he had a few years before he is grown, but I want to know that you all would let him lead an army when he is of age."

The words were like shivers down their spines. They trusted Hamalcar, and liked the boy, but to let him lead their sons to war, untested, was pushing boundaries.

Avero stood and spoke.
"Your son is young, and we do not know what he will be like as a commander. Infact, we do not know what he will be like as a soldier. But I will allow giving him a chance to fight with our men. If he can stand, side-by-side, with our men and show his bravery and skill, then perhaps we will allow him so."

Much whispering happened after Avero spoke. The boy himself was sitting next to Kanmi in the front row. He was much like his father, and was fluent with his silver tongue already. In fact he had made many Iberian friends, who vowed their allegiance to him already.

"Hamalcar, stand for the men." His father told him.

Hamalcar stood. A boy of twelve, but you could already you could tell he had confidence. He looked at the men in the room and politely smiled. Then he spoke.

"What my father says is true. I love this land as if it were my own, but, one day I must give my mother a proper burial. I know you don't trust my with your boys and therefore I accept the challenge to join your ranks." With that, he took off his royal ring, his belt, and his sandals and marched to the local recruitment grounds on the other end of the city.

Kanmi seeing the boy leaving jumped to his feet and followed the boy. Hamalcar, the boys father was a bit surprised at the boys actions but approved with a nod to Kanmi. The men just sat there and watched as the boy left.

"You now do not have a son, Hamalcar, until he has proved himself worthy. He is now a son of Iberia, the land of fierce warriors." Someone is the back row spoke.

Carthage rules! I am currently in the 230s with my Carthage campaign. I was attacked by the Ptolemies and have since conquered every province in Africa except the two Nubian provinces and Gaetulia, I conquered all of Spain save Celtiberia, vellika and the province next to Vellika. I control 3/4 of Italy including Rome, I control all Sicily and Cyprus and Massalia. Hamalcar Barca by sheer coincidence had a son named Hannibal! Sadly Hannibal Barca fought only two battles against the Romans, both were heroic victories but he died in the second one. In fact his death won the battle. The two lines were engaged but the Romans were on the brink of breaking, the battle held in the balance. Hannibal blew his horn and charged into the Roman line. Two things happened at the exact same time. A lucky Roman thrust slew Hannibal, and the Roman line collapsed.

Hamalcar Barca is still commanding troops in Egypt, being the conquerer of all Egypt. The current Hero of the Roman campaign is Hannibal son of Gisco who has been sluaghtering Romans in Gaul for almost ten years.

Coming of age
https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1250/comingofage.jpg

https://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4777/hamalcarbarca.jpg

He stood there, proudly wearing the heavy chainmail on his shoulders. From head to toe he was equipped to fight. His body, lean and muscular. He was only 16, but in the past 4 years he had really grown into a man. Forgetting his Punic culture when he left his fathers palace 4 years ago, he took up studying the art of war.

He learned to throw a completely metaled javelin many yards, only to land in another mans chest. His right hand had calluses from holding and fighting with his Gladius Hispanicus. His left, was sturdy and powerful from carrying the Scutum, his shield. His feet were as strong as an oxes, for he ran many miles in his service.

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/2075/barcabattle.jpg

Many of his friends called him Barca, which meant "thunderbolt", for he could outrun any man. But it wasn't just his physical prowess they praised. He was smart and had fluent speech. He could lead men, that was seen in his first few months of his service. Being of nobile birth, Kanmi purchased him the armour and weaponry of true warriors of the Iberian people.

A light wind blew against his face on this hot day. Rain drizzled from the skies. To his right stood Likinos, a celtic warrior who's father migrated to Gader. To his left stood his best friend Uxentio, who's father was Avero from the council of Gader. Uxentio and Barca pledged their life to each other in battle. If one of them died, the other would commit suicide after the battle. This was their pact.

They were on guard duty, against the raiders who hurt the trade of the city. No one knew who the leader of these raiders were but there was speculation that they were working for someone.

They stood in two rows, side by side, facing the marching enemy against them. Being only 16, Barca fought in a few battle, but most of them were in dark forests where they would ambush the enemy. This was a different battle. The enemy marched out at them in a line, so they too formed a line and waited.

He could here the enemy march threw the grass, and gripping his sword, he looked at Uxentio and then Likinos. They were focused on the enemy. He too looked.

Suddenly, the enemy charged the line of Scutarii.
https://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3348/barcabattle2.jpg

Bracing himself for the charge he threw his javelins at the enemy and watched as a man was completely knocked off his feet when his made its mark.
The enemy closed in and Barca swung his sword right at the enemies neck while the enemy was looking Uxentio.
https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/2029/barcathroat.jpg

He quickly fell to the ground and died, and another man took his place.
Barca braced himself, realizing he lost his cover and blocked a blow made by the enemy. Uxentio gutted that man from behind. The fighting lasted for a few minutes and then the enemy ran back to reform their line and rest.

Then the enemy commander roused his men to once more. He personally lead the charge in the center of his line, right were Barca was located.
https://img15.imageshack.us/img15/2696/eleadercharges.jpg

Likinos barely managed to block a blow made by the enemy commander and was knocked off his feet. Barca swung as hard as he could at the commander and knocked his sword out of his hands.
https://img18.imageshack.us/img18/7001/eleaderkills.jpg
The commander was enraged and quickly picked up the sword to parry Barcas second swing.

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6448/bestare.jpg
"Be careful there boy, I will Kill you!" The commander yelled, by now his bravery was even more noticable as the rest of his reached our line.

"I do not fear you, you dog." Barca yelled back, his voice not at all worried.

https://img12.imageshack.us/img12/4057/beduel2.jpg
The commander swung his sword at Barca but Uxentio managed to hit him with his sheild, knocking him off balance.
https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/4562/beduel3.jpg
Taking advantage of this, Barca put his sword right into the mans chest, cutting threw his armor. Barco jumped back up to his feet and looked down at the man with surprise at how quickly he had killed him.
https://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4159/bkillse.jpg
The enemy line, seeing that there commander died, ran back to reform once again. This time the Lorica Scutarii didn't give them much breathing time and charged right into their midst.
https://img18.imageshack.us/img18/4232/bcharge.jpg
The first of them enemy was competetly knocked off their feet.
The rest, didn't last long as Barca, Uxentio, Likinos and the entire group of men clash into them. Likinos yelled something in his celtic tongue as he swung his bloody sword at a man.
https://img13.imageshack.us/img13/8722/bkills.jpg
There was little resistance after the charge and they finally broke free and ran.
https://img12.imageshack.us/img12/9889/enemyrouts.jpg

-----------------------------------------------------------

After the battle, Barca walked threw the forest alone, making sure all the routed enemy was dead. His sword was bloody from the days events and he carried it with pride. He would see his father soon, and he would present the bloody sword to him. Kanmi would be delighted.

Barca stopped suddenly when he heard moaning. He slowly walked toward where he heard the moaning and readied himself for a trap if need be. Almost killing the man, he stopped suddenly to realize that it was a scout that had been sent out to find out who was responsible for the raids. He was bleeding badly from a stomach wound.

Barca dropped to his knees craddling the mans head in his lap. The man looked at Barca with pain in his eyes.
"Water.." His cracked throat barely let out.
Barca reached for his pouch and unbuckled it from his belt. He poured it slowly into the mans mouth, not letting a drop fall out. It was in vain. The man started coughing terribly and Barca had to lean his over the side of his lap in order for the man to settle. Then the man went blank.

Barca put his sword into its sheath and tied his shield to his back and he lifted the man over his shoulders. He walked slowly and gently as to not hurt the man. He carried him all the way back to camp, singing a song of mourning for the hurt man.
----------------------------------------------

The next day Barca was summoned to the tent of the commander. As he walked in he saw the scout, who's name was Sigilo, and the commander. Sigilo looked better, recieving treated for his wound, and food for his hungry belly.

"Thank you for saving my life Barca. I am a very lucky man." Sigilo said to Barca, laying back down on his cot.

"Not only did you save a life, but you also saved some valuable information. Sigilo spied out the enemy and found out that the tribe of Lusotania is responsible for the raids. Apparently their king is jealous of the all the wealth and people who migrate to Gader. When they saw Sigilo, they chased him for day and finally threw a javelin into him, but he still managed to survive 2 whole days on that field. Thank you Barca." The commander said while giving Barca a slap on the back.

Barca bowed and left the tent. Soon, there would be war, but not with the romans... not just yet.

A triumphant return

Barca's unit marched back home to Gader. Their 4 years of training had ended. Now they would be enlisted into the real standing army. It had been 4 years since Barca had seen the city and he could not believe what he saw. The city was enforced with large stone walls, those comparable to Lilibeo.
https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/8063/barcaseeshamalcar.jpg
As he nears the city he realized that his father had been waiting for him. A whole host awaited him.

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6077/wholearmy.jpg

Barca and his fellow soldiers marched to the heavily armed and beautifully arrayed cavalry of the Punic bodyguard. Hamalcar, his father stood motionless until Barca walked up to him and pulled his sword out of its sheath. Blood, dried crusty blood was on the beautiful blade. His armour, too was covered in blood, and was not parade ready.

"My son, you are grown." Hamalcar said to his boy as he got of his horse.

Embracing the boy, Hamalcar realized how big his son was. Strong, tall, good looking, this was not the cute boy that left his palace that left that night.

Kanmi too got off his horse and took the sword out of Barca's hand.

"A good blade, and worthy of such a man." Was all he said.

"Do you see these men, this vast arrayment of power?" Hamalcar said to his son as he walked toward the city.

"Yes." Was all that Barca could say.

"They have been prepared for you." Hamalcar said, walking toward the first group of men.

"These men, from young age are taught the use of a sling." Hamalcar talked about the Balearic slingers as he walked past them.
https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/9294/balericslingers.jpg

Many of the men made a fist and put it against their hearts as Barca walked by.

They walked further to look at another set of men.

"These are young men, raised from the tribes of many people to help you on your path." Hamalcar said to his boy, pointing out a group of men.
https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/9233/ambushers.jpg

They walked even further toward the city. Hamalcar listened to Barca speak of his experience in the army.

"These are Iberi Caetrati, raised to run and skirmish. They are a valuable addition to your force."
https://img16.imageshack.us/img16/515/lightinfantry.jpg

They walked further, Barca noticed that as they went deeper into the ranks that the quality of the troops increased.

They stopped at the Iberi Scutari, a group of Medium infantry, ready and awaiting their young leader.
https://img14.imageshack.us/img14/6159/iberiscrutarii.jpg

Barca stopped at looked into a soldiers eyes. Green eyes. He nodded and continued.

"You know these men. The Loricati Scutarri. Born and raised to defend the cheiftans to the death, they will defend you to the death." Hamalcar said while he walked past the heavily armed men.

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3608/loricascrutarii.jpg

They walked past those men, still furthur toward the city and stopped at the Iberi Lanceari.

"These men are from the nobility. Their horse along costs more than a years worth of taxes."

Barca stopped and admired the beautiful cavalry. The men on the horses looked at the boy and saluted.
https://img11.imageshack.us/img11/5784/heavycavalry.jpg

"You will not believe how much this cost me." Hamalcar said as he pointed at the hellenic style artillery peice.

https://img10.imageshack.us/img10/990/artilleryj.jpg

"This machine can knock down this wall with ease, it will be very useful to you." Hamalcar said.

Barca silently looked at the contraption and wondered how it worked. He would know soon it enough.

"My son, I have even bought trained elephants for you. These beasts tower above all other beasts. Any man who sees them in battle will surely flee." Hamalcar said with pride.

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6808/africanelephants.jpg

Barca stood in awe of such towering beasts. He had heard about them, and read about them, but never imagined them to be so big. How could men control such things.

"These are your men to control. These men will help you get vengeance." Hamalcar stopped at the gates of the city and waited for them to be opened.

Both men walked into the city only to be greeted by the citizens with cheer and flower pedals from the rooftops. A royal horse was given to the young man and he and his father rode to the palace side by side while the people cheered.

Inside the palace Barca was greeted by many nobiles who shook his hand and bowed. They drank wine and watched the entertainment well into the night.

Outside, the whole city was celebrating the return of the governors son, aswell as the return of their own boys. Much parading and singing was done. Food and wine was distributed amongst the population and people had a grand time.

Kanmi always followed the boy, keeping his distance but never letting him out of his site. He had done that once, and it nearly cost the boys life many years ago. Kanmi would never leave the boy after this day.

Ok, so if everyone has noticed, Hamalcar had a son who is also Hamalcar. Hamalcar junior will be called Barca in my stories, to make things simpler. I should have another update tomorrow night.

Helpless across the sea

Mago paced impatiently across the room, listening to his scribes and clerks as they scrambled through hundreds of pages of city finances from the city of Gader.

"Lord there are no errors here, Im telling you that right now!" One of the clerks finally said after annoying going through so many pages looking for a single exploit in which Hamalcar could hoard money.

"I don't believe you!" Mago whirled at the clerk and exclaimed.

"Its all there, every last piece of gold is accounted for." The clerk continued.

It was like this for 3 days now, every day Mago getting more impatient. It got so bad that the clerks had to beg Bomilkar to come to the city of Kart-Hadast to talk some sense to him. They all hoped he would arrive soon.

Just as they were about to give up, Bomilkar walked into the room and looked at everyone with surprise.

15 or so men, looking through papers, marking things down and Mago, pacing through the room. His face, exhausted and old from the lack of sleep.

"Bomilkar, what are you doing here? Who summoned you?" Mago, almost enraged said to his brother.

"Nevermind that, you look awful."

The clerk who had spoken earlier started showing Bomilkar the papers which listed very tediously the city finances. Trade, tax, army upkeep, even civil services were all clearly marked and dated to show legitimacy. Hamalcar was a very good manager and such documents proved it.

"Were at war with Lusotania." Mago said to his brother with a sigh.

"What?! Why would Hamalcar attack our allies?" Bomilkar shifting his attention from the scrolls to his brother.

"He didn't. Our spies reported massive recruitment in Iberia, and many raids performed and payed for by the Lusotanian king. Apparently he is jealous at the prosperity of our regions in spain." Mago started saying. "Hamalcar got his war. The council already voted today. He was given permission to control all of Iberia."

The news startled Bomilkar and he didn't say anything. Looking at his brother, he saw worry and a bit of hate.

"What are you making them do?" Bomilkar asked Mago, nodding to the clerks and scribes who were working on the finances.

"Hamalcar didn't get rich from nowhere, there is no way he can recruit such a large force without it showing on the finances."

Bomilkar pondered for a moment. "Could it be his personal money? From a farm or vineyard perhaps?"

Mago froze, realizing his mistake. Just from being extremely aggravated, he took his fist and cleared his personal desk of its belonging with a long swoop.

"Settle down. You know its possible. Hamalcar always held grudges. Now hes letting it get to you." Bomilkar said, trying to calm down his brother. Then he turned to the scribes and clerks and said, "Gentleman, leave us. You are free to go."

"I feel helpless with him being so far away. There is no way to control him. My informants tell me he has great influence in Gader and removing him from there would be disastrous. My only hope is that he is killed in battle."

"Come brother, let us dowse you with wine and let us forget about Hamalcar. Tonight, the world will be a blur to us." Bomilkar said, putting his hand on Magos shoulder and leading him away from his office to his personal chambers, where there was a much more relaxing mood.

Bomilkar prepared the evenings entertainment. There were numidian dancers in the city and he quickly hired them. Along with entertainment, he had the chef prepare a fine meal, complete with a good roast and many other delicacies of the Mediterranean.

But in the morning, Mago was still restless.

The Heartbeat of war

It is true that I am not a great warrior. I am not dressed in proper armor, for I do not have the money for it. But i have my javelins, and my wit about me, and that, will kill many a men. I was born in the southern mountains of Iberia, the ones just south of Baikor. It wasn't a great city, but we served our king, the king of Lusitania greatly and fervently.

I didn't fear death, oh no. Many skirmishes with the enemy taught me to hate those who fear death. For I watched as many of them ran as I threw my javelin into their back. I had a good arm.

A few days ago, our local lord called us into service to protect the city. Many of us weren't rich and all we could bring into the city were our javelins a small sheild and a small dagger for last stands.

https://img14.imageshack.us/img14/7986/eturindu.jpg

We numbered a few hundred. But what I saw outside, which wasn't much. I could tell their force outnumbered us. Our scout ran into the city in the morning, he was sweating, dirty and panting like a dog. We crowded around him and asked him many questions about the enemy. Before he could answer any of us, he fell to the ground and died.

It didn't make sense, but I think both exhaustion and fear killed him. Anyways, we heard the horn of our lord and ran toward the games to defend them. Then, from nowhere, we heard a great crash, louder than any thunder or lightning, hit our gates. With great momentum the gates fell off their hinges and our walls lay their naked for the world to enter into.
https://img14.imageshack.us/img14/4319/gatessmashed.jpg

My heart jumped both with excitement, fear and a bit of curiosity. We ran up to the open gates to investigate.

https://img14.imageshack.us/img14/6789/eturindubygates.jpg

I looked out and saw the great host of men. I have never seen such a body of men. Thousands of them. And then I saw beasts! Great beasts, bigger than anything ive seen. The gods were truly on their side.

"The gods are on their side!" Someone yelled.

"Runesocesius, he sends them great javelins to destroy us! Surely we are doomed!" Another man yelled.

"SHUT UP!" We guard the entranced I yelled. "No one shall pass so long as Im alive!"

"Oh great Runesocesius, help us in our plight!" Someone prayed to the great and sacred site we had standing erect behind us.

It was silent ones more, until the great heartbeat of the god, that is what it sounded like to me was heard again. This time, out of the corner of my eye I could see a great stone, flying at a group of soldiers that were near me.

https://img14.imageshack.us/img14/7026/eturindufireball.jpg

I tried to yell out something, but before I could, I watched in horror as the men were pummpled and thrown into the air, as if the fist of the gods came down to earth to pound these men.
https://img25.imageshack.us/img25/8771/eturinduexplosion.jpg

There we screams of terror and men started wavering. We started running , but this time the enemy had already reached our walls. Slingers let loose their great lead bullets.
https://img14.imageshack.us/img14/2935/leadbullets.jpg

They hit us with great efficiency. The bullets killed many men around us. We tried to run, but the skirmishers let loose their javelins.
https://img23.imageshack.us/img23/2461/hugemess.jpg
So many men died. And i was not one of them. Why? I didn't deserve to live. I was a coward.
https://img14.imageshack.us/img14/1867/hugemess2.jpg
Another bolt from the gods smashed into us, killing many more. The few soldiers, and I, hid behind teh great statue of our god. We rested and caught our breath. I looked at them, they were all struck with fear.

The next moment, Our sacred site, the site of our god was too destroyed by one of the bolts of death. The heartbeat of the enemies god was a powerful and deadly tool. How could men use such things? The few men who were with me died, being crushed by the rubble.
https://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8514/destroyedtemple.jpg

My heart was torn. I could see our lord from the distance, watching in horror from the days events.
I grabbed my javelins, which I left on the ground and ran at the enemy. This was my end. Hundreds of bullets and javelins aimed only at me hit their mark.
https://img14.imageshack.us/img14/8805/eturindudeath.jpg

I thought of my wife and two sons as I lay their dieing. I thought of the gods heartbeat which kept beating.

Another volley from the enemy and my body was torn.

War is hell..

The last of the weeds

Hanno sat in his tent, eating a peice of chicken thigh. He at slowly, enjoying his food. He ripped a piece of the chicken, dipped it into a sauce, which was a bit spicy and then bit off. Then he repeated that step finishing the piece. He licked his pointer finger and then thumb clean. He had a look of satisfaction on his face, as if eating a piece of chicken was something to be cherished.

"Sir, we have found him." Stepped into the tent was tall dark skinned soldier. Marks of battle were across his face.

"Yes, Danel, now sit and eat. I told you not to go looking until you were done eating." Hanno insistently said.

"Yes lord." Danel sat next to Hanno. Pouring himself some wine, he too bit off a peice of chicken, although it was a bony part and he found little meat. Continueing he said, "They are bringing him here."

"Good, we may both speak to him then." Hanno said, unfazed.

Inside the tent entered another soldier, younger, but not any younger than 25. In one had he held his spear, in the other the head of Muttines. The head was help by his left hand, and he gripped the hair with ease. A bit of blood dripped from the dead mans short neck.

"Set him on the table." Hanno said, then finished. "Thank you, you may go."

The head of Muttines was bloody and dirty. Full of sand in all the crevices. Cleaning his hands with a towel, Hanno wiped the dirt of the mans head and spoke.
"So we meet again old friend. It seems as if we are finally even. You spared my life a few years ago, and now I spared you a terrible life for a good death."

Hanno waited, as if the dead man was going to speak. Danel made no jesture toward the dead man and just looked at Hanno while he spoke, flushing chicken down to his belly with a big gulp of wine.

"Yes yes, we probably would have been good friends, had it not been for this war. But I won." Hanno continued, but then stopped suddenly.

"I WON!" Hanno yelled at the head.

Ever since Muttines escape from Hanno's camp, Muttines was nothing but trouble. He lead revolts in conquered towns killed many merchants and raided his supply trains. He created new armies, only to be destroyed by Hanno. 7 times they went to battle. Everytime time, Hanno's army would be their drums, blow their horns and march out at the enemy and Muttines men ran with fear. 2 years alone were spent in the great desert chasing Muttines from this water hole, to that one. When the final stronghold of the Numidian king fell, so fell the great king.

Garama was defeated earlier this morning. Thousands of Enemy soldiers died so that this war would end. Muttines wasn't captured alive, oh no, he wouldn't allow that. He foolishly charged through the lines of infantry to meet Hanno. And then he was slain. That was the story of Muttines.

The weeds were pulled out of Numidia. Now it was time to plant grains of all sorts into this fertile african soil.. and Hanno planned on returning home.

I can't help it. My loyalties are always clear.

Oh, and that would have just been strange, wouldn't it? Well, I thought about it, and what I tried to portray there was Hanno going a little bonkers. I mean, if you had to leave your home and lead an army for 10+ years across the desert, chasing some guy who killed your brother, well I think we all would have gone bonkers. Its only gonna make this aar more interesting. Thanks for reading.

The council

https://img115.imageshack.us/img115/8971/baalhammon.jpg

Mago walked through the halls of his great palace. He walked quickly and nervously. His heart was heavy and sweat was beginning to form beads on his forehead. He walked up to the stairs to an old cellar and looked both ways, just out of habit. With no one there, the climbed down, and jumped to his feet.

Walking another 100 paces toward a lit torch, he stopped when he got there. A guard opened up the underground gate and he entered. He thought to himself how many times he had done this. How many times the council called upon him. Lately, it was quite often.
The council was a secret society. The richest men on this side of the Mediterranean. Exactly 30 of them. They were smart and manipulative and they always got their way. They chose Mago to be Shophet, because he was more submissive than Hamalcar. Hamalcar was shart and quick and witty and they couldn't control him.

He remembered the first time he had meet them. It was during an election, a very close race between him and Hamalcar. He recieved a note and directions of where to go. And so he went. He walked down the into the cellar and toward the torch. The council greeted him and promised him that he would win, if he promised to serve them. Mago wanted the position and hastily agreed. He won by a big margin.

A week before voting time, they started spreading massive propoganda about Mago and his great conquests in Iberia. Plays were written, games were held in his honor. That was when Mago realized he owed these men alot. Ofcourse, he could have won the election by himself, but they wanted to prove to him that they were above the law and all it stood for.

Mago has never actually seen the faces of the Council, but he knew they had agents everywhere. They knew everything, and payed a very high price for it.

He stood there, underground, while the council gathered. They were all directly underneath the great Ziggurat of Baal Hammon, lord of the sky. Mago clenched his fists for his hatred of these men. Yet, he feared them greatly.

"Mago what news do you bring us of your brother?" The questions began.

Mago didn't even look up at who spoke, as he would not see him. It was literally pitch dark and he only recognized the voices, as he had heard them many times before.

"He is doing well, his shipments of gold are arriving on schedule. He is becoming increasingly popular in Spain. So is his son." Mago replied.

"What is his sons name?" Another asked.

"Hamalcar Barca, but they call him Barca because he is very quick." Mago replied again.

"Let us hope he is not that quick, or else he will never be able to please a woman."

The joke was crude, yet the crowd laughed.

"Has he begun his campaign into Iberia or is he waiting?"

"He has begun, but we are not aware of what his movements are." Mago replied again.

There was silence for a moment, and Mago thought they were done for today. Usually if they called him on a moments notice, they just left when the questions were answered. Mago waited some more but he knew they weren't leaving yet.

"Hanno will be returning home soon, will he not?"

"Yes, he is finishing his campaign, and will be in the City of Kart-Hadast before the winter."

"He WILL run for office, do you understand?" The voice sent chills down Mago's back.

"Yes." Mago said, he voice trembling. He hated these men with such a passion.

"Good, you are free to go. Do not disappoint us."

Mago turned around and walked through the gate and started to go back home when he fell to the ground and started sobbing. His wife would miss him for dinner, but he did not care. He sobbed for himself, his father, and any other man who would be elected Shofet. He hated those men, he wished them all very painful deaths. He felt like a used rag, a worthless stray dog. They owned him. His soul was sold.

He lay there for hours on that cold hard stone. His face had stains of tears and under his nose there was crusty snot. Eventually, when he stopped pitying himself he got up and cleaned his face and continued his on with life.

Uxentio

It was a warm spring evening when they sacked Sucum-Murgi. They had laid seige in the winter and decided it was too cold to fight. Early in the spring though, several small armies of levies attacked the carthaginian host only to fall upon great numbers of stout men. Their attacks were uncoordinated and pitiful by Barca's standards.

Uxentio sat there in the room with all the war council that Barca had. Being only 17, he didn't speak too much, but when he did speak, his words were wise. Behind Barca was Kanmi, ever watching the boy turn into a real man. Kanmi was 35, 18 years older than the boy but he looked young and powerful. His biceps were bigger than a youngsters head. His perctorals were like two powerful shells of tortoises that lived along the rivers in this region. He stood tall and proud, only speaking when spoken too. He was dumb, by no means, but he was silent.

Likinos, the celt, was tall, but a bit slinky for his kind. He made up for it with speed though. There was an anecdote that he once charged the enemy and killed 3 of them before any of them had time to brace themselves and parry. Uxentio laughed every single time the story was told among the ranks, but believed it was true.

Now they were here, in the princes home, drinking the princes wine, and eating fine roast. Uxentio looked at his friend, Barca.
Barca was a strange breed of men. He was so proud, yet humble. He knew everything, yet he asked so many questions. When he walked through the streets, people would stop and wave and bow to the young man, yet he would still stop and help the little old lady with the pale of water she carried.

In battle, he was different too. He was not like the Iberians or celts. He wasn't even like the Punes. He took every casualty as a loss. He was meticulous in his setup, yet he was ruthless in his attacks. His battles were all very similar. He would set up the slingers first, followed by the skirmishers. Behind them were three lines of infantry, starting with the light infantry followed by the medium then the heavy.

In a seige, which her commanded 2 already, he first took out the gates with the greek machine. Then he wittled the enemy down with the slingers from the Balearic islands. Oh how feirce these men were. Their lead bullets could cut through metal.

After the walls had holes in them, he advance his infantry with the order they were set up in. He never engaged the light infantry in real combat, only allowed them to throw their javelins. The medium infantry would hold the first couple charges of the enemy and then retreat through the ranks of the heaviest infantry.

Meanwhile, Barca only watched. Silently. The warriors knew their orders. They obeyed them to the last bit. After the battles, Barca dealt with reports and helped with the wounded. Only when all his men have eaten would he eat.

Uxentio realized how much respect he had for Barca. He remembered the first time he had saw the punic boy.

They were in the forum of Gader. Uxentio lead a group of boys around, causing trouble with this or that stall. Being the son of a prominent council member had its perks. Barca walked through the streets and saw the boys and ran up to them. Uxentio stood infront of the boys, hands at his waist, and asked the boy his name.

"What do they call you, you dirty pune?" Uxentio said with authority.

"My name is Hamalcar, and I am not dirty." Hamalcar answered back, with a very smart tone. "Can I play with you?"

"Play with us? We don't play, we fight!" Uxentio barked at Hamalcar, and then turned to the group of boys that all watched the proceedings. "Don't we?"

The boys nodded and snickered.

"Well then, I want to fight too." Hamalcar said to Uxentio.

Uxentio was glad that Hamalcar fell into the trap. Uxentio stood a head taller than Hamalcar, even though they were both 10 years of age.

The boys surrounded Uxentio and Hamalcar and started cheering for Uxentio.

Hamalcar realized what was happening and put his fist ups to his face to protect himself.

Uxentio lunged at Hamalcar and knocked him down and his strong thrust. There was much squabbling but in the end, Hamalcar lay on the ground, blood flowing from his nose, a cut on his lip and his eye was swollen shut. Uxentio was scratched up a bit, but was able to leave without too much harm done to him.

The next day, Hamalcar returned, and approuched the group of boy.

"Did you not recieve a good beating yesterday? Or do you really hate yourself?" Uxentio roared at the boy, while the boys all laughed at how ridiculous Hamalcar's face looked.

Hamalcar said nothing and lunged at Uxentio this time. Once again a fierce fight pursued and once again Uxentio stood over his opponent as the victor.

This happened the third and fourth and fifth day. It happened for two weeks. Every single time, Hamalcar returned to be beaten again. On the fifteenth time, Uxentio, limping from the fight before, came up to the boy and kissed him on his swollen lips.

"You are my brother, for I have NEVER seen such courage as yours."

From that day one, the boys became unseperable.

Uxentio remembered how Barca talked about the revenge he seeked. How he would purge romans from the face of this earth. Uxentio listened fervently and promised to follow Barca to the ends of the earth.

And so, Uxentio sat there sipping his wine and watching his friend discuss his next move with the men in the room late into the night.

Life and Death
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/1559/africandeserst.jpg
Hanno gazed at the the cool morning desert, scanning the horizon for his enemy. For thirteen and a half years, he spent his life in this desert, fighting. For thirteen years he spent on the road, never seeing Kart-Hadast. Thirteen years he gave his life for his country. And this was it. Today, he would kill his enemy and march home triumphantly.

He promised to meet his wife in Kart-Hadast and show her the city. He had married a woman from Garama. A gift from the client ruler they had installed there. Hanno had not ever seen a woman so beautiful! Her body was slender, but she was not too thin. Her green eyes contrasted her dark brown hair so wonderfully it tore at his heart. Her Lucius lips begged him to stay, but he had to leave. It would be three seasons since he saw her.

He spent the last 9 months chasing the last brother of Muttines. He had killed 3 of Muttines brothers who all rightfully claimed the throne of Numidia. They raised armies and fought and lost. One was left. Today, Hanno would kill him.

A little later, when the sun was in the horizon, Hanno spotted the army. He ordered his men to line up. They were exhausted, but he needed to finish this. The sun burned the metal they were wearing. The heat was truly unbearable.

With his lines in order, Hanno would make this a personal fight. Over the past years he had learned how to fight these Numidians. Kill the leader and the rest will run. He had personally watched many of the warlords fall by the sword of his veteran bodyguard. Today would be no different.
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/407/hannolastbattle.jpg

The enemy approached under the hot son. They inched near Hanno's line. Realizing they had to fight sometime, Balhanno chose to attack today.

Hanno was watching his line being harrassed by the enemy skirmishers when he kicked his horse on the sides and ordered his cavalry to respond. Contrary to belief, the heavy cavalry of the Kart-Hadast Bodyguard was no slower than the nimble Numidian cavalry. They sped up to the enemy and Hanno realized that the enemy general was personally leading the harassment. Blowing his trumpet, Hanno ordered his cavalry to chase the skirmishers.
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/434/hannochase.jpg
---
Balhanno laughed at the fool that chased him up the hill. He ordered every last javelin to be thrown at the chasing cavalry. He watched as several of the bodyguard fall by his mens dexterity with a javelin.
His cavalry knew the plan, and retreated to the top of the hill. The heavy armour of carthaginian cavarly slowed them down severly and Balhanno raised his sword for his men to prepare their attack.
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/8004/formuttines.jpg
The Numidian cavarly lined up at the top of the giant sand dune and charged down the hill.

https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/341/hannofight.jpg
-----
The clash was immense and undescribable. The sound of smashing sheilds and swords and spears cut right through your ears. It sent shivers down Hannos spine. His own horse was trapped between two horses and couldn't move. It paniced, but Hanno quickly settled it down and forced it toward the enemy. Looking for his enemy, Balhanno, Hanno didn't see a numidian dart toward him.

"HANNO WATCH OUT!" Danel yelled at Hanno, but it was too late.
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/7119/hannocut.jpg
The spear of the enemy ripped through Hannos upper thigh. Masked by the shock of it all Hanno only felt warm blood on his thigh. When he saw the wound, he cried out in pain, which was muffled by the sound of battle. His attacked was quickly cut up into shreds by Hanno's bodyguard. They all looked to him in horror, never seeing their general hurt this badly.
"Would he retreat? Would he run?" What should we do?" Were the thoughts on the faces of his bodyguards when he saw them.

Hanno seeing his men wavering, kicked his horse and rode out toward the enemy. His sword quickly entered a mans gut and with that, his bodyguard resumed fighting.
----
Balhanno was in trouble. Cut off from his men and surrounded by the enemy he knew he wouldn't last long. He took his sword and swong it at an enemy, only to be blocked and almost thrown of his horse. He turned quickly to stop a blow from another when he felt something sharp cut into this lower back.
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/7758/balhannostabbed.jpg
Blood rushed to his head and he lost balance. Dropping his sword he fell hard onto the ground and was trampled by his enemy. The last thing he heard and felt was his ribs cracking from under a hoof of a horse.

----------
Cheers erupted from the ranks as news spread of Balhanno's death. Hanno, encouraged with such news started chasing the enemy. He felt his heart beat pound in his chest, like a bird in a cage, it was trying to free itself. Adrenaline surged through his body as he singlehandedly chaged another group of numidians. What looked like a routing troop soon turned out to be a trap.
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6169/hannoswinging.jpg
Seeing him in peril his bodyguard followed, but they lost many men after the first fight. Hanno shrugged at his fortune and swung at the enemy, cutting deep into his chest. Crimson fluids splattered all over Hanno's sheild as he pulled his sword out. Another Numidian tried grabbing him and pulling him off the horse and for a moment there was struggle.
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3924/hannogettingpulledofhor.jpg
With a bit of luck the mans hands slipped and Hanno was loose from the enemy. Now both sides were rushing to enter the fight. The Numidians knew that Hanno was near and revenge was possible, but the royal bodyguard knew it too, and they made sure to cut quickly toward Hanno.

Fortune seemed to smile at Hanno as he saw his men nearing, he almost let out a laugh while he swung his sword hard at another foe.
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/4223/hannofighting.jpg
Victory was so close, Hanno knew this. Soon he would be at home, with his wife. He imagined her sweet red lips.

Time stopped. Hanno felt himself fly off his horse. A Numidian skirmisher charged him at full speed. He saw out of the corner of his eye the spear the peirced his chest. He felt his breathing change. He felt strange flying off his horse. He saw his wife again, telling him he was a father. He saw it all, as if he was there.
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2528/hannodieing.jpg
THUD! Feeling nothing, Hanno realized he was dieing. The skirmishers were routing. He watched them rout. He was on his back. The sun had scorched the earth he was laying on. He felt the hot sand burn his neck. He saw Danel jump of his horse, and fall onto his knees.

"LORD! Oh, NO lord, you have to be alright! VICTORY IS OURS!" Danel yelled at Hanno.

Hanno didn't reply, he just stared at Danel, who grabbed his hand in his own and sqeezed it tight. Danel let out a loud cry and stood and roared at the world. The roar of a real lion. Thats the last sound Hanno heard.
----------------

A hundred miles away, in the city of Garama, another roar was being heard. The citizens of the village listened as they heard the wife of Hanno cry out in pain. Birth pain.

"PUSH! PUSH!" An old woman yelled at the young woman.

There was a moment of silence as the young woman had tears streaming down her eyes and then another cry could be heard. A childs.

The mother let out a screech as the baby slipped from her womb. The quick and smart fingers of the old woman cut the cord and cleaned the child.

"Its a boy!" She exclaimed. "What will you name him?" Holding the child in her hands, and laying him on the young mothers chest.

The mother held her child for the first time. Looking at her beautiful baby boy, she answered. "Giscon."

Um... Ofcourse he was supposed to die. (If he died and I didn't want him to I would have reloaded the battle, His charge was completly suicidal) This will make things interesting with the council and Hamalcar.. All of this soon to be revealed. Thank you for commenting.

The brothers meet
https://img12.imageshack.us/img12/9154/magosarmy.jpg
Mago was 63 when the council called upon him the last time. He was 63 when the army he had been waiting for came marching into the city of Kart-Hadast. He was old and he felt it.

The armies rest in Kart-Hadast was short lived though, as the council called upon Mago, and made him lie to the citizens and the army, telling them that there was another Numidian army to crush, near Ippone. In reality, they sent him to stop Hamalcar from reaching the the great city of Kart-Hadast, so they he couldn't participate in the elections.

They had chosen Adherbal to run instead of Hanno. Adherbal was an idiot, but they knew this. They did not want to let Hamalcar run for office. That was the only thing they cared about.

And so, Mago was just outside of the city of Ippone, awaiting his brother. His orders were clear. He sighed, His backed ached and his muscles were weak. His years of service had worn him out. He had just one thing let to do.

He was in his tent alone, taking out a small glass veil of liquid. Poison. Snake venom. It killed slowly, as if the death were natural. No pain would the person recieving this feel. Mago nodded to himself, put on a cloak and walked to the stables they had built. He got on his magnificent black horse called Hippocampus, and rode away from camp.

--------------
When Mago neared the outcampment that Hamalcar had pitched for himself, he was stopped by two stout warriors Hamalcar had brought with himself.

"I am Mago, The Shofet of Kart-Hadast. I have come to see my brother" Mago said with authority, behaving like the usual him.

The soldiers stopped and looked at eachother, unsure of what to do. They were near Hamalcars tent and Hamalcar came out to see what the problem was.

"Stop, this is my brother, Mago." Hamalcar said to the soldiers who were holding the reins to the horse.

Hamalcar looked at Mago, who was grayed all over. Mago got off the horse and walked to Hamalcar and collapsed in his arms. Hamalcar helped Mago into the tent and offered some wine.

"Thank you brother." Mago said to his little brother.

There was an uneasy silence for a moment as both of them looked at each other and sipped their wine.

"Am I that special that Kart-Hadast sends and entire army to escort me to the city?" Hamalcar said, with a sarcastic tone.

Mago laughed at his brother, realizing that he still had a sense of humor.

"Listen to my little brother," He began with a serious tone, "You have to save Kart-Hadast."

Hamalcar turned sharply toward Mago and looked into his face to see if he was being serious.

There was a cold stone look on Mago's face. Hamalcar sat and looked intently at Mago.

"There is evil men controlling Kart-Hadast, ruthless, evil men. They threaten my family. They Made me pick Hanno and not you that day many years ago. They wouldn't let me re-enforce Lilibeo when you came and begged for help. And now, they sent me here to the desert on the alarm that there was another Numidian army, only to kill you. But I shall not. You have to take over Kart-Hadast. Kill those men and rule Kart-Hadast. Dissassemble the senate. They are nothing but a bunch of greedy old men trying to make a pension for themselves." Mago paused for a moment.

Hamalcar looked at his brother, tears were forming in his eyes as he remembered his wife polymede.

"You are lying to me, I will not be fooled! Do not think your sins of the past will be forgotten" Hamalcar, now enraged stood up and stared down at his brother.

Mago stayed silent and only started taking off his shirt. When all the layers were off, he showed a symbol that was branded on his chest by the council of 30. Shame was seen in his eyes.

"I have not layed with my wife for 20 years because of this mark. I am their slave, but not any more. I will not kill you. Instead, I have already killed myself. Tonight we shall ride out to the army encampment and I will die in my sleep and you will become the General. You will march your army to Kart-Hadast and take it. The republic failed, I fear. A strong fist is needed to control our empire. You hold that strong fist."

At that, the brothers started weeping for eachothers mistakes. Hamalcar forgave his brother for the acts that were commited and promised horrible deaths to the council of 30.

They rode out the army encampment that night together, as brothers. And sure enough, the snake venom slowly killed Mago, and in his sleep, he died.
https://img14.imageshack.us/img14/6125/magodies.jpg

The next day, after enbalming Mago, they marched back to the city of Kart-Hadast, with Hamalcar in the lead.

A twist of fate

The council of 30 had heard the news, and immeadiatly sailed to Lilibeo to get help from their allies, Rome. It was strange what this self proclaimed but extremely rich group of fat men could do with their money.

After paying off the governer of Lilibeo, who was as greedy as the next man in Rome. Everything was handled quickly and efficiently. Such was the sinews of infinate gold. It was said once by the council that they had enough gold to buy the entire island of Sicily back from Rome. Such things were speculation, but they surely were proud of what they had.

These men, these 30 men were from all over. Some were from Iberia, others Citizen of Kart-Hadast itself. Others were Romans and Greeks. Either way, they all used Kart-Hadast to increase their riches. They had slowly gained position in the senate of Kart-Hadast, paying this and that man off, until they reached the top. They had forced the Shofet to submit to them.

For 20 years they made him do things he didn't entirely think was good for his Republic. They groomed him to be a peon in an endless world of shiny metals. Then tragedy had struck. He died without an heir. Hanno was going to be their next pick. But he died too, and things turned for the worse. Hamalcar was returning. The man who had tried to claim power many years ago.

They remembered it very well. The first time they set out to try to tame Mago. Hamalcar was running for Shofet, and proclaiming the greed and corrupt system of the Senate. He knew they were being payed off by someone. He wanted to completely disband the Senate or limit its power in a significant way, but failed to do so because of the council.

The people sided with Hamalcar. Stomachs were empty while the coffers of the rich were swelling with gold. He lived among them, even though he was apart of the royal family. Everyday we would stand in the Bazaars and public places and preach to them of himself. It was so strange for them to listen to this man. They could come up to him and sit at his feet and listen to his wonderful ideas of a new Kart-Hadast.

That was when the Council of 30 acted. They spread massive propaganda about Mago. Games were held in his honor, food was distributed amongst the masses, payed for by the council. Suddenly things were good and Mago, who was much more conservative toward the current government system won the election.

The council loved how easily the public was swayed. "The best way to a mans heart is through his belly." That was their motto. Ever since that election they had fed the masses of Kart-Hadast and gave the claim that Mago was responsible for such actions.

So now, they were at the gates of Rome, being escorted by a fine cohort of men. They were quickly escorted to senatorial meeting where they made their plee.

Baalshillek, the unofficial leader of these men stood to address the greedy senators of Rome.

"My dear friends, we have prospered much with our alliance. Let our past woes not trouble us. The City of Kart-Hadast needs your help. A vile and evil man, Hamalcar is marching against it. He plans to sack and it and go to war with Rome. His son pledges to avenge his mothers death. These men MUST be stopped at once. We need your help. We have no army to muster as they are being blindly let by that man. We BEG you to send a legion to stop his advancement. Your services will be greatly rewarded."

There was murmor in the senate. They had been payed off by these men many times as well. The pirates in Messana were subdued by Rome, but the legion was payed for by the council. One must remember that pirates dealt some heavy financial burdens on these rich men, and Kart-Hadast did not want to attack messana, for fear of rome. Such was the history.

The speech had swayed the Senate of Rome. They knew the council could be trusted with its financial promises. They remembered Messana and Lilibeo. It was agreed that a legion would be sent to the province of Kart-Hadast IF it would be payed for by the council. Also they would have to pay for any and all war reperations to the familys of the Legionaries. This was a hefty price, but the council agreed to whatever they asked.

And so, they sailed to the island of Sicily, to be escorted back to the powerhouse of the Carthaginian empire by a legion of Rome.

Chains of life

"Likinos!"

Likinos shuddered as he heard his father roar out his name. It is time to go, he thought to himself.
He was a boy of 10 years old, born and raised here in the city of Gader. He knew these streets backwards and upside down, playing in then when he was still an infant.

His father on the other hand, was born in a noble family in the Island of Hibernia. He was the youngest of 6 brothers, all who were bigger than normal men. His father stood a head taller than every man in the city of Gader, and his body was well tuned and built for war. He ran away from home, after realizing his life would consist of serving his eldest brother. When the Carthaginians landed in Hibernia to trade with them their precious tin, he hid in a boat and didn't come out from hiding until he was starved. By then they were halfway to Spain.

He followed the Carthaginian merchant for the next 10 years, learning the skills to become a merchant. at 25, he married a his masters only daughter and they had a son. At childbirth, though, the mother died and Bareus was left alone with Likinos. For Likinos means "born to sorrow".

Since then, Bareus was just a trader in the city of Gader, teaching his son about his tribe. And now, he was turning 10, the grand time of a young boys life.

They walked through the streets, Likinos and his father. If you did not know them, you would never be able to guess that they were related. Bareus stood tall and handsome and proud, while Likinos was slinky, quick and skinny. He walked with a hunched back as if he was pretending to be an animal.

Likinos knew what they were going to do, but he wasn't sure how long it would take. His father told him that they would be making him his armour, but what he didn't understand was why. Gader had many great blacksmith factories that punched out beautiful armour with stunning speed, yet his father didn't order one.

They stopped at a blacksmith shop to buy a few materials. His father did all the talking while Likinos looked at a Gladius falcata, a curved short sword. He ran his finger down the sharp edge of it and cut himself. He was quite surprised when blood came dripping out of his finger.

"Dam you boy, can't you stand still for a moment?" Bareus snapped at his son.

Likinos pulled back and stood next to his father as he watched his father pack tools of all sorts into a leather pouch and then throw over his shoulder. His father was also carrying a bow and several arrows, along with his long sword, and his own set of armour, which he wore with pride.

The clerk at the shop handed Likinos metal wire. Likinos nearly dropped it from being so heavy. Bareaus helped Likinos put it over his shoulder as well and then they marched out of the city.
-------
Several hours later, after leaving civilization, they were in a hilly forested area where they camped near a river. Likinos watched as his father set up a fish trap to keep them from starving while Likinos broke a piece of bread and handed it to his father.

His father stopped what he was doing and started eating the piece of bread while he looked at his son.
"Open the pouch with the tools and lay them out on that flat rock over there." Bareus said to his son, pointing at a rock near their tent.

Likinos obeyed, and after doing he needed, he carried the metal wire there as well. His father walked to the rock and sat next to it.

"Come here boy." Bareus called to his son finding him looking at the fish trap that he set.

"Today, we will start to make you your armour." He began, arranging his tools as needed.

"But why can't the shops at Gader make them?" Likinos spoke for the first time.

Bareus, started working, and answered his son patiently. "My son, you are a Celt. And we, Celts make out own armor. When we make it, we realize what kind of work it takes to put it together, as it will later save our life. These chains will become your body as well. You must treat it as a piece of you, and not metal. That is why we make our own armor. My father taught me to make this chain mail, and I will now teach you."

And so the work began. Bareus started wrapping the thick metal wire around a round metal stake which would be used to hold a ship together. He worked slowly, explaining to his son every step. After they had wrapped the metal wire around, they pulled it off and it looked like a long spring. His father then took a pliers and cut each ring, slowly, one at a time to ensure quality. He talked to the rings as he cut them in his Celtic tongue, asking the rings to protect his son from harm in his battles.

Then he let Likinos try. Likinos was stronger than he looked and quickly took to it. They worked late into the night, and Likinos worked while his father started a fire and cooked the fish they had caught. When all the wire was made into rings they fell asleep.

Likinos woke to his right hand being sore from twisting so much metal the night before. He took a bite to eat and drank from the river and looked to his father to teach him further steps. After each ring was done, his father showed him the basic 4-1 patterns of the rings. After making the first few weaves, Likinos started it himself. He first made the chain to the the from the length of the top of his torso to the midsection of his thighs.

Then began the slow process of putting together the rest of the chain. He worked all day while his father hunted for the wild animals that roamed the forest. He only stopped for eating and relieving himself.

When he closed his eyes at night he could only chains. He was a quite boy, but this time with his father had really brightened him up and he spoke freely to the man he had once feared.

After the last ring was put together, he finally put it on. The weight of the project really surprised him, as it was very heavy. When his father returned with a deer over his back, he stood their silently watching his boy in his own armour, belt tightened, swinging his longsword playfully. His heart swelled with pride at what he saw and a tear rolled down his cheek.

He let himself calm down before he continued to the tent.

"Likinos." Bareus said to his son.

Likinos shrugged and dropped the sword with fear. Turning around to see his father smile at him, he smiled back and walked to his father.

He father looked at the armor and nodded after feeling the armor in his fingers.

"Well done, my boy. You will be a great warrior one day."

Fork in the road.

https://img7.imageshack.us/img7/2443/forkinroad.jpg

The dark night had finally enveloped the camp in which Uxentio was staying in.
Somewhere a bird of the night could be heard, making its rounds to eat.
Uxentio's mind raced through the days events, and the past years events
and how much has changed.

First off, he disliked riding a horse, and begged Barca to be put on the ground
as an infantry commander. Barca hesitated at first, but later allowed it, seeing
Uxentio's persistence. Then there were the battles.

They had fought six field battles against the tribe of Lusitani. They have
captured two major towns, but also fought six field battles which had
changed Uxentio. He remembered their first battle.

His mind drifted back to that day. He was fighting countless Lusitani warriors.
All strong and proud men. He remembered how his flank was in serious trouble,
but he did not waver, and continued to inspire the men around him with his might.
He thrust his Falcata in countless men that day. He remembered the warm blood
that flowed onto his hands from the other mans belly. Then there was the rain.

The day the Lusitani King attacked us, there was a heavy rain. One that sent
chills down your body because it was so cold. That, and it was extremely windy,
making the rain like little pebbles hitting your face with full speed. The day was a
horrid one, but Uxentio's heart filled with excitement from it. He searched the battle
field for a man worthy of him. He wished to know what it was like to lose. He wanted
another man to claim victory over him. But alas, they couldn't.

He had purposely chose his group of men to guard the most difficult and weakest
spot in the line. For his wished to be challenged. Wave after wave was defeated
by his men. He embolded his men when he cut the head off a lieutenant and held
it by the hair, waiving it at the enemy to taunt them. His men all followed, and cut
heads off the dead to throw them at the enemy. Uxentio's blood lust did not fade,
as the enemy charged once again, seeing that this man needed to be killed to win
the battle.

Uxentio remembered that for an hour straight, his hand did not stop swinging. All
the reserved of the enemy came dashing to meet him. His heart soured at the
chance to meet his match. His cut his way through many men, chopping and hacking
with his falcata. No man could stop him. He remembered a warrior cutting his arm,
but that did not stop him.

Even though Uxentio was undefeated, his men were starting to waver. Barca, seeing
that there was massive disarray in the line, ordered the elephants to flank the enemy.
Uxentio remembered as the huge beast came charging at the enemy flank. He let
out a laugh, even though he was short of breath. He laughed as hard as he could,
cutting several more men. The feet of the elephants made a terribe noise, far
worse than any other drum of war. He remembered the cries of pain that the
men let out after being stabbed in the back by the tusks of the elephants. He
saw the pure white tusks of the elephants turn to a crimson red as they killed more
and more men.

https://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7154/elephantscharge.jpg

The battle turned with a blink of an eye. Those men who wavered
were now charging headlong with the elephants. The other men, who were
fighting bravely against the Carthaginian line now were fleeing with all might.
Dropping both shield and sword and spear, in order to get away from the beasts.

*****

Uxentio's thoughts drifted to another Heroic Victory that was won. He
remembered the Lusitani attacking three times after the first battle with the elephants.
But this one was even bigger. There was a river crossing, which they planned to go
hrough, if the Lusitani had not challenged them. Uxentio Gladly took into his heart
that he would fight today, always wearing his Armour and helmet. The enemy
had charged them once, but seeing that they were at a disadvantage, pulled back.

https://img134.imageshack.us/img134/1774/uxentioleader.jpg

Uxentio quickly seized the opportunity to charge back at the enemy while
they were bloated at the river crossing. He and 2 other officers charged
along with a few men to embolden the rest.

https://img526.imageshack.us/img526/7408/chargeintheriver.jpg

The water stung Uxentio's feet as he ran through it, getting slightly deeper.
It was up to his knees when the enemy finally stopped and turned around
to meet the oncoming foe. What came next was a terrible sound of shield
smashing against sheild.

https://img297.imageshack.us/img297/7011/riverfight.jpg

To a man new to battle, the sound along could make him turn and run,
but Uxentio's men were tough and battle hardened. They loved their
leader and loved to watch him fight the foe.

https://img509.imageshack.us/img509/7371/uxentioswinging.jpg

Uxentio quickly stabbed a man and prepared to himself to parry. He bent
down low to avoid a spear thrust and cut another mans hamstring.
https://img172.imageshack.us/img172/1497/uxentiokilling.jpg

After several bloody minutes of fighting in the river, the enemy general was
pulled of his horse and killed.
https://img231.imageshack.us/img231/6811/lusitanigeneraldead.jpg

There seemed to a be a mad dash to run away, as the enemy quickly turned to
flee. Uxentio, who was exhausted from fighting, gathered the very last of his
strength and chased the enemy several hundred yards killing many men by
thrusting his sword into their backs.

https://img151.imageshack.us/img151/3576/lusitanifleeing.jpg

Uxentio had never seen so many men run away at one time, and his heart
was all the more excited at killing the cowards. He actually passed several
foes to be able let him men have some killing as he killed the men ahead.
They all seemed like helpless children, not being able to fight back. He thrust
his sword through many men before they reached the end of the river crossing.
Uxentio was about to follow them even further, but saw that Barca had mobilized
the cavalry to kill all the routers. Uxentio stayed there for a few moments,
catching his breath.

https://img168.imageshack.us/img168/5469/uxentiostopping.jpg

He turned around and saw that he had done enough killing today, anyways.

https://img142.imageshack.us/img142/6059/lusitanidead.jpg

*****

The morning came and Uxentio had not slept. Instead he marched to the
tent of Barca wear the war council gathered.
When he reached the tent he pleaded with Barca to let him go.

"My dear friend, my heart is mad with lust for blood. I will not rest until it is
satisfied. I must prove to the whole world, that there is not a warrior that can
challenge me. I will stay In Iberia, going from this village to that to challenge
any man who will fight. I Vow to you, that when you finally start off on your
journey to fight the Romans, I will come back and kill as many as I can. Please
friend, do not deny me of my right as a warrior."

The speech surprised many in the tent, but not Barca. Barca always knew
that Uxentio would learn no other trade, but war. He knew in his heart that
Uxentio would go mad with the lust to kill. He knew this and his still loved
his Iberian friend.

"You are selfish basterd, you have no right to ask of such things." Likinos barked at Uxentio.

"Likinos, that is enough," Barca interrupted. "You may go, Uxentio, but
remember that I need you as a warrior. I need you to help me defeat the
Romans. I will look for you in my journey."

That day, the entire army weeped at the loss of their greatest warrior. They
have all heard of his deeds in battle and loved him for it. Many men came to
Uxentio's tent to bid him farewell, embracing him as their brother. Uxentio was
touched by such respect, but didn't change him mind. After the morning meal,
when every one was ready, they marched out of the fort and started along a path.

After they had marched for a while they reached a fork in the road. One way
lead west to the next Lusitani city, and the other, north to the wild mountains
where many powerful and savage tribes lived. Uxentio went north, at the fork in
the road.

Well there it is, a few days late, but nonetheless its there. Sorry about it being so long though. I needed to explain a lot, as Uxentio will be very important later. Also big thanks to Miotas for pointing out that my format was a bit hard to read on smaller moniters. I hope that this will be easier for you all.

P.S. MAA, I hope you don't mind that I copied your format.

To a new land

"Lord, we are ready to depart."

Biurtilaur Beliricoi, the dead kings Second man stood at the shores of Iberia.
His leather boots stood in the rocky beach, protecting his feet from the cold
morning water. He looked out at the burnt city of Oxtraca. He set fire to it
last night, burning all things useful to the enemy.

Six times he had fought next to his king, and he had the scars to prove it. Six
times he lost to this new kind of General. Barca, he believed was his name, for
that is what the enemies war cry was.

Five times he had looked unto his king, and uttered "Defeat". On the Sixth battle,
there was no king. He had died, in that river. He had always thought his king a
fool for attacking the Carthaginians, yet he said nothing. It was not in his place.
The kings 3 sons all died consecutively in the First, Second, and Third battles.

Biurtilaur was named Heir to the king, because the king had no one else. When
the king had died, he was left in charge of a destroyed people. He knew he had
little time to make decisions. Barca would come, and he would win. This Peninsula
had not known an army that could match him in a hundred years.

And so, when asked what to do, he told them to burn all the villages, kill the
livestock, and cure the meat. They would journey away from the forsaken land.
North, using the sea as their means of movement. All the people that wished
to follow him gathered here with all their precious belongings. They burned
Oxtraca the night before and traveled to the sea, where the boats were
ready and waiting.

And so, He stood there looking out at his homeland for the last time,
not knowing when the next time he would see it, if ever. He stepped
into the boat and they were off. Hundreds of boats filled with many
people pushed themselves away from the land and drifted into the water. North.

(Sorry about not updating for so long, Ive had a busy weekend.)

Divided they fall

https://img9.imageshack.us/img9/1746/85199146.jpg

"Make way! Make way for the messenger!" A group of horsemen yelled
at civilians as they galloped through the streets.

Civilians stopped what they were doing and watched the handful of men
on horses race through the city, riding toward the palace. Some waved
their fists at the oncoming men, as they were being completely disruptive
of the markets movement laws.

Bomilkar stood at the top of the palace stairs, awaiting the horsemen,
which he knew were coming. He ran down the stairs with great urgency,
to read the message which was being delivered. The man got of his horse,
and without saying anything, handed Bomilkar the papyrus.

The Romans are coming, leave the city, and meet us at the base of the
mountain west of the city. If you do not, the council will kill you.
Hamalcar

Bomilkar stared at the note. He realized there was a huge decision
to be made. He could admit defeat to Hamalcar, allow him to rule,
and end his political career. Or, let the Romans come, allow them
to sack the city, and beg mercy from the council. This was his choice.

Bomilkar looked up at the Five men who had rode through the city.
There were Five men, but Six horses. Hamalcar was good on his word.
The moment lasted an eternity, as Bomilkar looked out at the city. It
wasn't Kart-Hadast, but It was still a great city. Much would change
if He left with Hamalcar. And still, much would change if he didn't.

His country was divided. With the army under Hamalcar's authority,
and with reinforcements coming from spain and Numidia, Hamalcar
called the shots. Already most of the family members acknowledged his
right as Shofet for life. Just Aderbal, the Governer of Lepki and Carthalo
the governor of Karali resisted.

The Romans had landed an entire Legion on the coast of Africa that is
near Kart-Hadast. They took the city peacefully, but extract taxes
from it as if they conquered it. The senators were all killed when they
were lured into the great hall to speak with the council. Thirty Rich
men ruled the city with an Iron fist, using the legionaries to make people
submit to them. The consul of the Legion Publius Cornelius Scipio.

Being a corrupt and greedy man he submitted to the will of the Council of 30,
and readily used his army to quell all rebellion within the city. The council
had also captured Atiqa, as there was no force within the city that was
able to withstand the onslaught. Now they marched here.

Bomilkar, even in his old age, jumped onto the horse and immediatly the
entire entourage of men galloped west, toward the setting sun.

I finally caught up on this AAR.

:dizzy2: WOOOOOOOOOOOOW :dizzy2:

Some things I REALLY thought brought a lot to this story:

1. Hanno's handling of the Numidian king. Challenging him to a duel really brought out Hanno's character and showed he was much more than a monster.

2. The way you unfolded the story of the evil council (and how they will receive their just deserts I'm sure). Very engrossing! :applause: An aspect I never would have thought of.

3. The shift from perspectives as you tell the story from different viewpoints; especially during the battles, showing them from the "enemy's" point of view.

4. And I loved the irony of having P.C. Scipio be a stooge for the council!!! A Hannibal that really does destroy Rome, and a Scipio that is no better than a political puppet! :laugh4: That makes it so awesome to represent historical characters but give them TOTALLY different careers! Makes you think "what if?"

5. Personally, I like it that you have created a story, and are using RTW as a medium to tell the story. This is in contrast to an AAR that simply reflects what happens in the game. Playing the game to a story makes it so much more authentic, and you still get a grand dose of RTW!!!

Yes, it definitely shows that you have thought this all through! And for all that, you need another balloon for your collection: :balloon2: .

Hey, have you received some literary training or does it come naturally to you, as a result of long hours stocking shelves as you ponder your storyline? ~:)

Hey, have you received some literary training or does it come naturally to you, as a result of long hours stocking shelves as you ponder your storyline? ~:)

Well, thank you for such a well thoughout comment. I actually really enjoy them, as they show me what I have accomplished and maybe what isnt getting noticed. Anyways, Yes I have recieved no literary training besides highschool english (BLAH!), so im guessing it comes naturally, while I stock shelves.

Unite we stand

The desert sand was cool in the morning. Bomilkar felt it against the
soles of his feet. He stood there, looking out at the encampment of
Hamalcar's army. He found it strangely funny that the army that Hamalcar
had once asked the senate to control, he now controlled without the
senates consent. Even so, the senate was dead. And so was the republic.

He stood there, the rising sun to his back, along with the Five stout men
facing Hamalcar, who eagerly awaited them to return. He smiled as he
walked over to his older brother, who had really aged since the last time
he had seen him.

"Good morning to you brother, forgive me for getting you in such a way,
but it was the only way."

Bomilkar fell to his knees and bowed down to Hamalcar. To his great
surprise Hamalcar fell to his knees aswell. "Get up brother, we may have
fell when we were divided, but we WILL stand United."

Bomilkar got back up, unsure of what would happen next. All night he
thought if he had made the right decision when he sat atop that horse.
Would Halamcar kill him? He was a dangerous foe if kept alive, surely
Hamalcar had thought of that. His voice had gotten hoarse and dry over
the long day and night of riding and he could hardly utter

"Good morning."

"You must by tired brother, please come in and dine with me this morning?"

Hamalcar was smooth, the words rolled off his tongue. Even Bolmilkar could
be swayed by him. He did not follow his brother into the tent, no he actually
walked next to his brother into the tent. Hamalcar even opened the flap to
the tent for him. The cook had already cooked the morning meal and they sat
to eat.

"What is your plan?" Bomilkar tore through the silence as they began eating.

"My plan? They will come here. The entire army, I know it. Publius Cornelius
Scipio, That's his name, right?" He took great care pronouncing the name correctly.

"Yes, He is their conquering hero. He defeated their Gauls in the north, and
took Sicily with ease." Bomilkar answered, realizing he may have said to
much when it came to sicily.

"It must have been difficult for him to take sicily, considering there was no
General or army there to defend it." Hamalcar answered with Sarcasm.

Bomilkcar, putting down his wooden spoon, that was full to the brim with
cooked eggs, spoke with sorrow in his voice. "Im sorry for your loss brother,
I can only imagine what is was like."

"Do you apologize for the dead? Or for that swine council that rules Kart-Hadast?"
Hamalcar threw a look at Bomilkar, then continued. "Because I need neither. Mago
and I have made peace, and I buried him with Honor. The council, well, they still
have to pay."

Bomilkar nodded and went back to eating. Hamalcar looked at his aging brother.
Seeing his tension, he spoke again. "Do not worry, I am more Honorable that
some in my family. I am not going to kill you. I need you."

"You need me? If im not mistaken, you are the one who gives me refuge." Bomilkar
said with a smile. He always thought Hamalcar was sneaky and full of cunning, but
he couldn't help not liking him. "How do you need me?"

"While I will be busy ruling our empire, I need someone to make sure no money
is being slipped in anywhere. I want our Finances to be sealed tight. If the
council survives this war, I want them to be banished from our empire forever."

Bomilkar now understood, as there were few men who could handle such a task.
Even in his old age, Bomilkar was an excellent Administrator. He knew when
extortion was at play, and even though he usually allowed it, he could just
as easily cut it off.

They ate in silence for a bit longer, then Bomilkar spoke again. "How is your son?
Has he taken wife yet?"

"Yes, although he is very busy on campaign. My latest reports are that he has
taken two cities, and defeated the Lusitani Six times on the field."

"A young hero he is then, and what do you plan on doing with him when he is
done in Iberia?"

"He has sworn an oath, that he will destroy Italy." Hamalcar said with such calmness
that it caused goosebumps to run all over Bomilkars back.

"You mean Rome?" Bomilkar said in a joking way.

"No, he will burn the entire Peninsula down. He will not leave a single city
unburned. Oh, you do not know the things he will do to avenge his mother,
and to fulfill his oath to me."

Bomilkar searched Hamalcars face. He could not believe what he was hearing.

"Do not be trouble brother, I am only doing the Romans a favor. Their senate
is just as corrupt as ours."

Bomilkar ate some more, and took a drink of water before he asked his final
question. "How long till the Romans come?"

"If Im lucky, they will be here tomorrow. There are no places to camp an
army out here, and there is even less water. We stand between the Romans
and water. If they come quickly, like I suppose they will, they will be exhausted
and tormented from the summer heat. Then we will strike."

Hamalcar was barely able to finish his sentence when a scout was let into the room.

"Lord, the romans, we've spotted them. They will be here tomorrow."

Hamalcar looked at Bomilkar and smiled, "See, I was right.
Prepare the men for battle Danel."

Ok, well as we near the end of Part 1 of this (probably 3 part) aar, I would like to thank all my readers. Thank you, for bearing with this aar and its lack of pictures at times. Thank you for commenting and Lurking (4700+ veiws).

I understand there are lack of pictures, and I try to make up for that with my use of wording and descriptions. I hope its successful, but ofcourse Im not sure how much of the story you all understand. Am I missing out on some details? What is confusing in the current plot? Please do ask questions if you have any. If you dont want to ruin the story for others, feel free to PM me.

One last thing. The next 3 or so weeks are going to be hectic for me. I will try to post some updates, but they may be short and stale. I hope you all have enjoyed Part 1 as much as I have, and I hope to see the views grow steadily when we enter Part 2.

Well, the only trouble I had was keeping track of which FM was who; how they are related and stuff.

I got a little mixed up between Hanno and Hasdrubal and Bomilka and Mago sometimes. But now that two of them are dead it's easier to keep track of. :clown:

And then of course there's the occasional grammatical error. Nothing a run through microsoft word couldn't fix, if you wrote it on there and then pasted it into your post.

But truly very awesome stuff! A++!

Bloody sand

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/8805/bloodysandphilisor.jpg

Philisor stood there, his body big and muscular, greatly emphasizing his
history as a warrior. From head to toe, his skin was baked, and dark from
the suns heat. He bore on his chest many scars from previous battles.
On his cheek, there was a deep cut which created a ditch in his skin, from
his right ear to through his cheek, all the way to his lip.

The past years, while he was on campaign against the numidians, he had
hardened. He needed little to survive. He went days without food, and
great lengths of time without water. His body learned to be obedient to
him. He never took his armour off, so it became light to him. He never
wasted his energy. He only conserved it. Saved it, for what would be later.

Now, his eyes followed the columns of Roman soldiers. He was assigned to
hold the hill at all costs. He was only allowed to retreat when he heard the
horn of Hamalcar. He always obeyed orders.

"Do not fear men. We have faced much adversity in our lives. We faced
hunger and thirst, and exhaustion. And we still triumphed. How many miles
have we marched under the hot sun?"

There was silence. Every man knew his duty. Every man knew that he did
not matter. Only obedience mattered. They had all hardened, like Philisor,
and those that didn't, they didn't live long.

"We stand here, not a step back, until we hear the horn. Then we hightail
it back behind the lines. Understood?"

In unison, several thousand men yelled "YES SIR!"

Philisor watched as the Romans neared. Closer and closer they came,
practically at crawling speed. He knew why too.

They were not prepared to fight us. They didn't know what true
exhaustion was. They did not know what thirst was, or hunger. For
two weeks they chased us deeper and deeper into the desert. The deeper
they chased, the less food and water they had. They had expected us to
fight, but we did not. Now, they were parched. Their skin was burned, and
many could not handle the strain of the sun on their armour, which heated
up to enormous degrees. Others, he was sure, had blisters from the suns heat,
on their faces, and sandals.

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6973/bloodysandcantsee.jpg

Philosor smiled at Hamalcar's brilliance. Surely, such a man was fit to rule.

"Get ready!" Philisor yelled a final order. There was a deafening clamour of
spears being put over their shoulders as man stood next to man to fight
off the enemy. The Romans charged the lines, but they did not know what
was to come.

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/8271/bloodysandromancharge.jpg

The moment before the clash of men was always the worst. There was a
strange silence, and then a whole plethora of sound. Shields breaking,
swords and spears grinding, men dieing, the wounded screaming. Philisor
had heard it all. He thrust his sword into the enemy. The man quickly fell
and another took his place. And so began the battle.

https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/2577/bloodysandphilisorfalli.jpg

The second man almost knocked down Philisor, but was unable to finish the
task. Philisor ended his life as well. The battle continued, as the Carthaginians
pushed and thrust their spears into the Romans, and the Romans thrust their
swords into the Carthaginians.
https://img268.imageshack.us/img268/8247/bloodysandfight.jpg

The fighting continued, and it seemed like forever was held in those few minutes.
Philisor knew that his line would not hold forever. Men were falling everywhere.
Then the trumpet sounded.

"Fall back! RETREAT! RUN MY BOYS!" Philisor yelled as he thrust his sword again,
to help another man flee.

***************
The ranks broke and the rout started. The enemy general, cocky in his
quick victory, personally charged the fleeing soldiers. He killed a few, and
rode one, not noticing what was ahead.
https://img13.imageshack.us/img13/9747/bloodysandretreat.jpg

The fleeing soldiers ran behind the second line of men, who had been waiting
for the enemy. Philisor stood behind the 2nd line, and tried to catch his
breath. The enemy fell upon the 2nd line, this time with less ferocity, but
their numbers were larger. After he had caught his breath, he heard the
trumpet sound once more, and the 2nd line retreated behind his line, which
had widened to create an even longer line.
https://img14.imageshack.us/img14/8148/bloodysandfinalstand.jpg

The romans charged again, and as planned, Philisors line allowed them to
push the carthaginian line closer to the 2nd line. The romans thought they
were falling back, but Oh!, they did not know what awaited them. When the
trumpet sounded again, the Romans had already pushed too hard, and ended
being in a semi-circle or men. Trapped, exhausted and scared, they threw
down their swords and ran. But not before many of them were plainly cut down.

https://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3247/romansfleeing.jpg

Thousands fell, and those who weren't caught by the infantry, were run down
by the heavy cavalry, which had been waiting and saving its energy.

The enemy General was pulled off his horse and hacked into peices. Philisor
laughed as he realized the best part of the battle was yet to come. Those
that they did not catch, the sun would take care of. For there was no refuge
for these men for many miles.

The battle was an immense victory. 70000 roman lay dead making the sand
crimson, while only 5000 Carthaginian men, out of 30000 gave their life for
this victory. Philisor sat in the bloody sand and rested. Now he could go home,
he thought.

"As many houses so many tradtitions (and atlest four times as many tastes) it seems" - they look a bit too corolful to me, although they have there use as anti-cavaly troopers.

The walls
https://img195.imageshack.us/img195/7721/gatesofkarthadast.jpg
The streets of the great city of Kart-Hadast were dustier
than ever.A year had passed since the Romans took over
the city, and now, due to the greatness of Hamalcar they
were expelled off the continent.

After defeating the Romans in the desert, the remaining
roman garrisons were slaughtered in the streets they
occupied. A few brave last stands took place in each city,
but they were finished off by the citizens of each city.
Two things remained left to do.

Today, The grand army, which had left to fight the numidians
almost twenty years ago, returned finally, to its resting place.
Kart-Hadast. They walked in step, perfectly drilled in their
parade march. Each man carried his weapons and armour
with ease, completely dressed for battle. The citizens of
Kart-Hadast ran up to the soldiers, kissed their hands and
thanked them with tears for doing so much.

First the lighter infantry marched in, their javelins strapped to
their shield, looking straight ahead, as if they were unaware of
anyone watching them. They walked up the wide main street of
Kart-Hadast and stood at attention at the Palace steps.

Second the heavier infantry too marched in, and they too,
were greeted with flowers and kisses from younger girls.
Cheers sounded from the oppressed crowd, which had been
freed by the Great Hamalcar.

After the Heavier infantry marched in, the elite marched in,
their Sarissa pointing high into the sky. The african elite
axemen too followed in, showing their sharp weapons of
war as they marched beautifully to the palace.

After all the infantry marched in, the choice cavalry galloped
gallantly through the citizens, which have been saving their
pomp for these men. Each cavalry soldier carried with them a
horn, which when they arrived at the desired, they blew with
all their might, and finally, Hamalcar the Great, The savior of
the city, Rode on a chariot, along side of Bomilkar.

Bomilkar and Hamalcar had their hands on each others shoulders,
as a sign of friendship, and with their other hand they waved at
the people. Their chariot was adored with gold and all sorts of
precious metals. They made their way to the palace, and when
reaching the steps bottom steps it, Bomilkar stopped, while
Hamalcar walked all the way too the top.

https://img13.imageshack.us/img13/8665/soldiersstanding.jpg

At the top of the stairs, Hamalcar raised his hand to speak.
There was a complete silence from the crowd. Thousands of
people stared at Hamalcar, the man they now adored for saving
them, in silence.

"Free people of Kart-Hadast. It is an honor to stand here in front
of you. My heart, goes out to all of you, who suffered under the
Yoke of the Romans. I swear to you, that they shall be punished
for their wrong doing. I will not rest until every city they occupy
burns."

He wasn't able to finish the sentence before the crowd cheered
with a sudden madness. "Burn, burn, burn, burn, burn."

Hamalcar let them cheer for a little while, but then raised his
hand for more silence. "My people, for many years, this city was
run by corrupt people. They forced the poor to be poorer, the
weak were oppressed, the widow and the orphan were mistreated.
THIS STOPS NOW. I have personally hunted down the people,
and now, we will bring them to justice. They will be hung off
the walls of our great city, to show all that we are not a
corrupt people!"

The crowd once again broke into a mad cheer, but this time
they all shouted different phrases. "Hang them!" Some shouted,
"Cut them into pieces, and send them to the corners of the
empire!" Others did. There were thousands of phrases being said.

"My people, with the senate being so corrupt, and now dead,
I will assume power. I will rule with a loving hand, which I
always have shown to you all. The army, after today will be
free to return to their families. Taxes will resume their normal
status. The granaries will be open to all who are hungry. This
city will prosper under my rule, I vow that to you, with my life."
With that said, he bowed down to his people.

There was an erie silence among the people. They had fled
Tyre, centuries ago, to avoid the hardships of a king. But
now, as proved, even the Senate can be corrupt.

"LONG LIVE HAMALCAR! LONG LIVE THE GREAT KING! LONG
LIVE KART-HADAST!" The crowd suddenly erupted.

They cheered for more than half an hour, all the while,
Hamalcar was on his knees bowing down to his people.
Even the army couldn't keep from cheering. Each man
clashed his sword, or axe or spear against his sheild.
*********************************

That day, and for the next 6 days, the city celebrated
its new king. The council, which Hamalcar caught trying
to escape by boat to Sicily, were individually charged
with corruption, were hung off the walls of the republic.
There was one man, who was particularly heavy, who's
body ripped from its neck when it was dropped landed on
the had sandy floor.

The spectacle only excited the crowd even more. People
from all the great cities of Africa came to the city. Even
Carthalo from Karali, and Adherbal from Lepki went to the
city to bow down to their new king.

And so, the walls of the republic, were now the walls of the Empire.

Yah, i had to include that part about the heavier one, people had to know that Hamalcar meant business. You'll have to wait for the italian campaign a bit here still. Hamalcar is in his mid 40's. Still has time to hold it together. Im pretty sure his son will rule after him.

That's awfully sexist of you, bet you wouldn't raise an eyebrow if his wife had been 8 years younger would you?
More seriously, most marriages would have been about political influence, if a wife from an advantageous family came on the market age was rarely a factor. Getting a hot 16 year old was usually just a bonus.

The end, of the beginning

Barca looked over the map of Spain, in his tent. There was
now a little drawn Carthaginian banner over all the cities in
Spain. He traced his finger from Gader, to Baikor, then onto
the place where Six battles were fought against the Lusitani.
Then he followed his path of Victory as he fought other
tribes of Spain. The greatest of the tribes, the Lusitani, fell.
Then the Asturians, Cantabrians, the celtiberians, Vettones,
Carpetani and finally Edetani. They all fell to his mighty army.

He was 26 Years old now grizzled in battle, and understood
tactics well enough to lead an army in his sleep. His father
sent him documents and scrolls written both by the Romans
and Hellenes. Over the last 10 years, he had read hundreds
of accounts of battles and tactics which were written in
those endless scrolls.

(Kurush Wuzurg)
He read about the great Kurush Wuzurg, which created the
Persian empire. He read of the mistakes of Darius and Xerxes
when they attacked the Greek city states. He read about
the ferociousness of the Spartans which held the mountain
passes for 3 days. He read of Phillip which reformed the
Makedonian army in order to conquer the city states of the
Hellenes.

He remembered his heart swell when he read of the victories
of Alexander the Great.

(Alexander the Great)
He remembered crying when he read of the great siege of Tyre and how is mother colony held bravely but was sacked.
https://img31.imageshack.us/img31/8404/siegeoftyre.jpg
(Siege of Tyre)
He couldn't eat for days when he found out Alexander the
Greats empire was torn apart after he died because of the
lack of a successor. He greatly admired Alexander and his
style of warfare.

He remembered laughing out loud in the middle of the night
when he read of Brennus's sack of Rome. He fell asleep with
a smile on his face as he thought of the Gallic king throw
his sword onto the scale when the Romans complained that
the weights were inconsistent. His heart burned to rid the
world of the Romans.

He read of the great Estrucian wars in which Rome rose to
dominance. He read about how the romans fought. He
memorized every battle that they fought in. He could actually
lead a roman army in it manipular warfare. First he would set
up the skirmishers and slingers, then the Hastati, following them
Principe, and then Triarii. Behind the Triarii would be light reserves,
or Rorari. Oh yes, he know how they fought. He knew of their deadly
Pila, and their discipline. He would put it to the test.

https://img19.imageshack.us/img19/4605/mapofitalia.jpg

He took a sip of wine while he over looked the map of the
Mediterranean sea. He looked at various maps of Italy, and
tried to imagine what it actually looked like. He imagined the
Po valley where the the Romans had beat the celts and now
called home. Soon, he would be able to see it.

His thoughts were interrupted by Likinos, his champion ever
since Uxentio left.

"Lord, the army is ready for your announcement." Likinos said stoically.

"Thanks you, Likinos."

Barca stepped out of the tent, and looked over at Kanmi who
had aged little the last 10 years. He was in his 40's now, but
he stood at attention with more pride than any young soldier
in the army.

He looked out at the encampment. Thousands of Warriors, clad
in their armour and armed to the teeth stood at attention, all facing
the tent which Barca had exited.

Their armour was cleaned and fixed for this occasion, as well
as their weapons sharpened and repaired. Many had personalized
their shields to depict the battles they were in. For 10 years
these men followed Barca. They all adored him.

"My brave warriors," Barca began. "For 10 years, we have
campaigned and conquered the tribes of Spain. Many times
I starved along side of you while campaigning. Many days I
marched with you all. I felt all the hardships you have felt. My
feet froze when yours did, my stomach grumbled when yours did.
In battle, I never hid from the enemy. No, I have many scars to
prove this. My sword has been bloodied just as yours has many
times. You are all my brothers."

The army cheered when he paused his speech. Never had Barca
seen his army held together by one spirit like they did today. His
heart ached as he continued to speak, as what he was going to
tell them was hard.

"My brave warriors, you know of my hatred toward the Romans.
You all know that they are nothing but barbaroi who sneak and
connive whenever possible. They do nothing honorably. They
killed my mother, and until recently, held a terrible yoke against
the main cities of Africa. My father, has defeated them and
restored power back to us, but we must strike them back. That
is why, I ask you all to follow me to Italy. I am in need of hardened
men who know war just as well as I do. I need you, to come with
me to sack their cities. The wealth you acquire as we go there
will be yours. I will not ask for a single obol from you."

There was silence now. Barca knew there would be, so he
continued. "But first, each man will return home for one year.
Go home to your wives, children, fathers. Go home and rest,
you deserve it. Let every man know, that if he does not return,
he will not be considered a coward."

After saying this, the entire army burst in cheers and ran toward
Barca. They kissed his feet and hands and lifted him up with their
hands. They passed him along on their hands through the entire
army singing songs of praise towards theri great general. Barca
loved the men for what they did, but in his heart, he was restless
for having to wait another year.

***********************

That night, back in the tent, Barca stood again overlooking the
map. Next to him was Kanmi listening to Barca tell him of his plans.
Likinos, once again entered the tent. He was dressed in traditional
celtic armour dress. He wore his chainmail, and his helmet. In
its sheath, there was his longsword. His shield was strapped
to his back. He wore his sturdy leather boots, which had a strap
for a little dagger to be held in place on his right boot.

Barca turned around to greet his friend when he noticed that
Likinos was dressed to leave. Sorrow came upon his face and
he turned back to the map.

"And where will my great Likinos be going now?"

"Home." Likinos gulped as he spoke.

"Home." Barca repeated "To your wife and child?" Barca spoke again,
still not looking.

"Yes, lord."

There was a moment of silence. Awkwardness
filled the tent for single moment, and Likinos turned to leave.

Barca whirled around asked Likinos "Will I ever see you again, Likinos?"

Likinos looked into Barca's eyes for a moment and replied. "Yes."

With that Likinos turned and left.

Oh, this is most thrilling! Will part two deal with Barca's invasion of Megale Hellas? I can't wait to read about Rome getting sacked :-D

If you read a few chapters back, there is a vague chapter about the lusos fleeing north.

Yeah, I remember. I didn't realise you had kept them alive in game. Ready to build themselves back up and reinvade Spain at the worst possible time for Barca perhaps....
Great update to prepare for part two, love that map of Italy. What period is it from?

Well, im not sure what im going to do with the lusos quite yet. Ill probably use them in part 3. (Thinking of Ideas already) The map I found on Google. I made a terrible attempt to write in Italia, so make it seem latin, but whatever. I think its supposed to be a late Medieval map of Italy.
***********
Ok. So with Part 1 done, there wont be an update for about a week an a half. I will be out of town starting all next week and then Ill get home on the following Monday that week. (the 22nd) Expect an update on that Tuesday or Wednesday.

I would also like to thank everyone who commented and read Part 1. Your input has seriously shaped the way I write my aar, and I will try to improve on every aspect of my writing.

A special thanks to Miotas and Johnhughthom.

Miotas for suggesting a different format to write it in to make it easier for people with smaller computer screens to read it, aswell as making it more pleasing to the eye.

A thanks to Johnhughthom for listening to my ideas for part 2 and offering ideas to make the story more enjoyable.

I always thought being a forger would be fun hammering metal. Also HAve you read Across The Waters: A Story Of Migration? It might be the greatest AAR i have ever read (well more story than AAR.) AT the end he posted everybody's names. I hope this AAR doesn't get screwed up by CTD.

I have read Across the waters. It was an epic aar, definitely worth the read. I also hope my aar doesn't succumb to a ctd, but im taking precautionary measures so it doesn't I have a save for every city I take, aswell as when important events take place. I can always reload and try again. But then again, some things will always be out of my hands.
