hi chaps, as you can see I am a longtime reader, short-time poster.. Great forum btw..
Now I can run campaigns until about 2 thirds of the way through. But had the same message eventually hit me- insificient memory game terminated. This will happen on a specific battle. i.e v Prussia in my gb campaign(Prague) and now it's happened in my Prussia campaign in a battle v holland(the dam)
On the loading screen the bar gets to the middle then just jitters for ages then terminates
Basically you can carry on a few turns if you don't take that battle, but clicking it is the same memory problem.. I installed a geforce 9500 especially to run this game plus I am up to 3g..
Anyone know a workaround? I lost the first game with multiple fleet issues.. I haven't even got a navy in this one!!!

3g means ... 3 GB RAM?
What are you swap file settings?
Tried the "can address more than 3GB of memory" flag?
Also, not sure what you mean by clicking is the same problem.

The workaround (which requires a little Windows expertise) that quadalpha suggests can be found here:

I have similar symptoms to the OP but my white screen CTDs don't have the "insufficient video memory" error message, just the standard "Empire.exe has encountered a problem" one. The workaround didn't help that, and my feeling is that it is only a possible fix for people getting the former message, and it won't help all of them. But worth a try if you feel confident enough about your windows skills.
If I had to guess, and I'm about to (!), I think there are still multiple problems causing CTDs, so CA patches/hotfixes and fansite workarounds will only at best help some people. At worst, of course, they may also introduce new problems and that seems to have happened too (further evidence for the multiple causes theory).
In my case, I can play up till a certain point in the grand campaign without instability, anywhere from 1710 or so till 1765 (the longest was the most recent attempt) before the problems start - slowing down of the campaign game, longer pauses when selecting units/towns/cities and within a few turns, a CTD. I have begun noticing from ProcessExplorer that memory usage often increases around the time of the slowdown. Empire.exe's Virtual Address space (that jargon from memory, not at that PC just now) increases, as does the total physical memory in use on my system (last time from 1.5Gb up to 1.6Gb on a system with 2Gb total physical memory). Mind you, I have had similar numbers with other games and they still run w/o problems, so I'm speculating that ETW isn't really running out of system resources, it just has internal problems that manifest themselves as it gets close to that point.
Damn, I broke my resolution. I was going to take a break from the forums and come back in a few weeks to see if ETW has been fixed enough to try again. But even if the game is proving less than addictive, the forums have taken over - I just can't beat that "one more post" addiction. :embarassed:
