Hi all:

Just wondering how do you kill a lot of enemies (like 1000) in bridge fights.

I just played expert level Shimazu. Lord Uesugi died quite early (around 1540, by attacking ronins!), so AI Hojo took over his ronin lands in a few years. I recalled the "port cheat" to avoid the annoying horde later. At around 1545, I shipped a few units to the peninsula province just south to Hojo's homebase and got a space. Then quickly I shipped about 1000 man and got his not-very-heavily-guarded homebase http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

AI Hojo was really upset and launched like 3000 to attack me. I had only 700 left and thinking about giving up. But I recalled some experienced players teach me that "Never give up a river province without a fight", so I stayed.

As my previous experinece with expert level, my troops get tired extra fast, and arrow uses up even faster. So I divided my naginata and archers into 3 rotating groups. Later I found that I probably need 4 to 6 shifts of archer to supply arrows on the bridge throughout the battle.

After a few successful blockings, Lord Hojo was stupid enough to lead the main assault. He couldn't backup, because the bridge was blocked by his own horde http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif Oh I love his horde! Hojo's reinforcement keep coming, but the majority of them start to run away right after they pass the bridge, so I coulnd't even touch them that much. (Those who did pass got sandwiched by my naginata + no-dachi flanks). I killed 500s, lost about 150. The bridge was made of corpses. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Old Hojo's son launched another attack the next month, and his general fled and walk back like 10 times. I killed 350s, lost 58.

Is there any way to kill more enemy? I guess I could set up more archers... Or wait for the guns. (Traders come in ~ 1547 A.D.) http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Maltz,
I let the army cross the bridge and then slip a unit behind the enemy. A lone YA on hold formation can keep the whole enemy army from escaping. A few lucky individuals may make it back to their homeland, but 98% usually end up in a pile on the bridge. This works the best when the enemy has more SA and less monks and ND.

u can kill as mnay as you want if ...

1.- u play with no time limit
this will ensure all reinforcemnts will have a chance to cross the river and get killed

2.- u have a rank 4+ general
then u can start playing with temerary tactics. If AI attacks with "soft" troops "bow&spear", u can let them cross the bridge with 4-5 units with "fire at will" disabled (important). When they are on your side. start a general attack with all footmen, enemy will break, massacre begins...
After a couple of rounds, they will rout and battle is over.
If he attacks with monks, no dachi, nagi, then let ur archers fire at will, and don't let enemy hold foot on you side.

3- u playing with gunners
The y can do whatever u want. As long as ur gunners don't shoot, the enemy will mass troops on your side, then u start an mass attack AND let the muskies fire at will. Enemy will break withi seconds....

4.- u playing with gunners 2
2 gun units guarding the bridge will rout any enemy.
U can play for 1/2 hour (with time compression 100%), ur gunners will make 200 kills at least and gain 1 honor point. Only from time to time will the enemy be able to even cross the bridge, in that case retreat the gunners and attack with infantry.

yeah, hold fire then BOOOM then use cav (if no spearmen there) or monks/no-dachi to mash the enemy before they even think of turning round. Worked 4 with against 2000 mori men when i only had 700, BANG, chased all the way back to Aki.
