View Full Version : 'Become Protectrate' Implications
Hi
Im playing as Saba, its 239Bc and a Ptolmai Diplomat turns up on my back door, he offers to be our protectorate. :egypt:
I accept becuase i wonder what it means - next turn i realise ive had 300k taken from me. As far as i can see there are no other changes.
My question is this: What do i get in return for my ENTIRE treasury?
Whats the diffrence between being a mere ally and being client kingdoms?
Thanks
You hace to pay tributes to them. In return, they won't attacke you ... maybe. You have given away your freedom and now they are your new masters.

I mostly make them my protectorate.
enjoy wealth let them be corrupt in the last city you granted them.
but for me I prefer dying than to be a vassal many enemy tried until I annihilate or made them bow under my power!

This has been mentioned a lot around any diplomacy-related threads here.
"protectorate" in RTW-terms translates to:
"at the end of the turn, the protectorate donates all money left in the treasury to it's protector".
Consequently, if you agree to become an AI faction's protectorate, you will precisely have the income of the last turn in your treasury at the beginning of every new turn, but not the surplus of any turns previous to that because at the end of the turn all the money not spent is transferred to the protector faction's treasury via automatic tribute.
Read the financial report scroll at the beginning of the turn and do the math; it should figure.
In return, you get a truce and maybe even military support against any foreign attackers (PROTECTorate, right?).
However, with the RTW berzerk AI I wouldn't count on it.

But he said that the Ptolemaioi offered to be HIS protectorate...meaning that they should be giving all of their surplus treasury to him. So that doesn't make sense. -M

An interesting effect of this is that once you get seriously rich, you can trick almost anyone into becoming your protectorate, at almost no loss. Simply offer your entire treasury in return for the enemy faction becoming a pretectorate. If you are rich enough, they will accept. On the next turn you get almost all the money back, the war is over, and you can look forward to regular tribute (as if you needed it) :2thumbsup:

Factions normally (AFAIK never) over to be a protectorate, you as human palyer can not offer it either. So they must have offered him to become their protectorate. Also the effects hi noticed, losing a huge part of his treasury indicates, that he is their protectorate.

Good point - guess he must have phrased it badly.

That is...brilliant! BTW, is it possible to ask factions currently at war with you to become a protectorate? -M

If you are at peace with them, the option 'protectorate' is not available. So you must be at war with them to make them your protectorate.
By the way, Svenn, did you know what protectorate means? I mean was you aware of the fact that it is like you would accept an unconditional surrender?

Can you rebel against them? I mean, can you attack their cities/armies? Losing 300k is not so much and it would be fun to fight your way out of oppression.

I laughed after I read that :clown:
I was in the same position a while back playing as the AS when small little Baktria offered the same thing. Of course I accepted.
The following messages confused me and then I saw my cash had been taken.
I guess when they say "protectorate" it means they will be "your protector".

Lol at RTR I was the Greekcities, in the very beginning the Seleucids attacked me, I made them my protectorate and the Seleucid territories were mine (not administrative). They just had me become their protector as a minor upstart kingdom, that campaign had AI being true to their diplomacy and I enjoyed it a lot. Sadly the save file is lost....
Sorry for the kinda OT:shame:
I guess when they say "protectorate" it means they will be "your protector of your money".
fixed:clown:
The AI won't do much for you...sadly
