View Full Version : Why don't mods work on vista?
I've tried downloading so many mods and all have them have been a failure apart from one, a BI mod that i only managed to install by 'repairing' BI. I heard it's something to do with program files but could somebody help me??? thanks

I'm not running Vista, so the following isnt too accurate ...
Afaik Vista 'tries' to protect users agains themselves by making it hard to do 'stuff' in certain places, like you cant save or overwrite files in your program files folder.
So a couple of things I heard you can do to get around this:
-Do not install into the program folder folder, which is good advice even if you dont use Vista ...
-As I understand under security settings you can set the level of annoyance(read: wether it allows you to do things in the program files folder) in Vista
-I've heard you can often get around the above by unpacking to a different folder and than move it to the program files folder.
You could try googling something like 'security settings vista', google is generally your friend when having problems like these. :)
Thanks but when i do install it not in the program files it goes "could not find ....." then a few letters and giberish...I'll see what i can do anyway, thanks
The brains at Microsoft decided that human beings should never edit anything in the Program Files folder or its subfolders, only programs. So Windows "protects" you by refusing to do anything with files in there.
You can get around this by either turning off UAC, or not installing anything in Program Files.
and UAC is...??
i'll give the program thingy a try though...thanks
PS : I'm definatly getting an XP next time i need to get a new PC...

UAC : User Account Control - the bane of Vista.
And how do I turn it off?
Turn off UAC (http://www.google.com/search?q=turn+off+uac&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a), take you pick.
