Alright. I am going to try this poll thing again. I hope I will not fail this time :sweatdrop:. I already attempted posting a poll in the Entrance Hall, and it worked, so no reason I should fail this time.

BTW, NEW RULE:

Choose favourite five.
No spamming all of them please.

Oh, and yes, the "Germanic Mercenary Shock Infantry) is Wargozes.

Lo there Aemilius, Im UK/US/Norvege depending on year time...and.....ure poll aint working....
It is now.

When you make a poll, you actually post a thread and then later add a poll. Just try it yourself and you will see.

So guys, how many mercenaries should we choose? I instructed everyone to choose three, but perhaps that is too restrictive. I have quite a bit of favourites myself. So hard to choose...

How about favourite four? Or favourite five? Or is three enough?

I did put it in the first post. Almost right away. Way before you posted. You are lying Meth and spamming/sabotaging/vandalising. For which I reported you. We will see how this turns out.

If possible you should change the title of the poll, there are alot of people who will simply vote without reading the posts first.

I quite like those Iberian spearmen, they were an essential part of any army fighting in the region when in my roman game.

I am disapointed that the Kamboja's didn't get in but I suppose I was the only one who mentioned them.

Balroae are without a doubt the best ones!
https://www.europabarbarorum.com/i/units/eleutheroi/british_isles/rebel_balroae.gif

They are cheap, have excellent stamina and morale(In the unit list the 10 is wrong), are incredible at throwing Javellines and are also quite good at melee(14 Atacks + Bonus in woods). They are the best Skirmisher infantry in the game!! And they cost 248 upkeep :smash:

Galatikoi Tindanotae, Misthophoroi Phalangitai, Misthophoroi Thraikioi Peltastai, Misthophoroi Toxotai Kretikoi and Pezoi Brettioi for me.

I'd agree with you on that, when playing somewhere in western europe - kinda a stretch to get them as AS though :laugh4:

These are my five favourite mercenaries:

Misthophoroi Phalangitai (Mercenary Hellenic Medium Phalanx)
Misthophoroi Toxotai Kretikoi (Mercenary Cretan Archers)
Iberi Scutari (Iberian Medium Spearmen)
Qala'im Balearim (Balearic Slingers)
Samnitici Milites (Samnite Heavy Infantry)

and the Scortamareva, but they weren't in the poll ;)

edit: and I have to add that I don't know all mercenaries :)

I just chose these three; my Hayasdan campaign is pretty much the first time I started using mercs, before I just used them as quick garrisons for my newly conquered towns (it's a miracle I never ended up like Epeiros after they hired some Gallic mercenaries).

Anyway I like these three, I don't have an opinion about the others.

Misthophoroi Hoplitai
Skuda Baexdzhyntae/Daha Baexdzhyntae
Misthophoroi Keltohellenikoi Hoplitai

I've chosen:
1. Misthophoroi Toxotai Kretikoi (Mercenary Cretan Archers) - expert archers perfect for any army.
2. Thraikioi Peltastai (Thraikian Peltasts) - very versatile troops.
3. Dunaminica (Celtiberian Heavy Infantry) - reliable and cool looking heavy infantry.
4. Shipri Tukul (Babylonian Heavy Spearmen) - great spear/mace/heavy armor combo, especially good as infantry for nomads.
5. Galatikoi Tindanotae (Galatian "Wild Men" Infantry) - these are just awesome! Love to hire them as hellenic factions and roleplay their wild nature on the battlefield (not listening to orders, charging headlong into the enemy and generally misbehaving).

Mistophoroi Phalangitai are always nice.

Toxotai Kretikoi is self explaining.

Shipri Tukul are great heavy infantry. Good against cavalry and they have AP-maces.

Thureophoroi and Keltohellenikoi Hoplitai always make good jack-of-all-trades. I recruit the Keltohellenikoi on a large scale as kind of Imperial Auxilia in my Keltoi territories. The Makedonian skin for them is much more beautiful than the mercenary skin though.

Maion, what is "Imperial Auxilia" in Greek? ;)

Auxilia is "Allied" in Latin, right? If so, then "Symmachoi Arches" (ΣΥΜΜΑΧΟΙ ΑΡΧΗΣ in Greek) or "Allies of the Empire" should be just fine.

Yeah, these guys are the perfect blend - the best that two magnificient cultures can offer in one unit - and just look so cool, with great RP potential. I really hope these buggers make EB2.

1.Thrakioi Peltastai: Incredibly versatile, can hold their own against legionaries and tindanotae in some cases (used them to assault the tindanotae filled walls of Ankyra when playing as Pontos)
2. Skuda Baexdzhyntae/Daha Baexdzhyntae: Horse archers, need I say more?
3. Curepos: Cheap and effective, their ap lances are a lifesaver against Romans (purchase en masse when playing as Sweboz)
4. Misthophoroi Toxotai Kretikoi: Mein gott those arrows rape, and swords? geez... Bosphorans and Syrians are amzanig too.
5. Tekastos: Don't really buy them as mercanaries, but I spam them once I can build them. Their pretty much 20 more Teceitos for pretty much the same cost (not exactly but pretty close).

Auxilia are the auxiliar troops. That means the "help"-troop.

By the time I reach them it would take too long to ship them anywhere I could really use them. I do hire them when I can when I'm first conquering Britain.

Surprised to see the Cretans winning by so much, but they are the only decent archers in the west... I just always use slingers myself.

Hmm. . . some surprises, some blatantly obvious. . .
My votes:
Thracian peltasts
Persian archer-spearmen
Rhaetian axemen

I only voted for 3 because the Cretan archers (#3 for me) are just blowing everything else away already and I didn't see Ethiopian swordsmen on there.

I'm a bit surprised the Thracians aren't more popular. I hire them as Getai even though I can recruit them in my cities. The Rhaetians aren't the most powerful or widely available, I just think they're kewl.

Had to vote Cretans at 1. Way too good of an archer unit to not make it. These guys seriously change battles by themselves.

Thrakian Peltasts at 2. Not battle changing per se but instead can perform any role i ask. Assault, defense, anti-infantry, anti-cavalry. Always try to pick a few up when I'm around Greece.

Classical Hoplites at 3. Very boring heavy infantry unit but so many times, I hire mercs for city battles where I don't want to use my factional units which might need to be transported back a ways to retrain, in street battles where flanking is not an option. Though Hoplites tire quickly, they excel at frontal assaults in street battles.

Special notice to Persian Archer-Spearmen for helping me win the East, Galatian Swortswordsmen for being that quick flanking unit as well as phalanx killer that i need around Greece, and Theuropheroi playing a role similar to Hoplites, little more flexible but not the great street pusher that Hoplites are.
