View Full Version : Armored Eastern Generals

Hi all.
I saw in a few AARs and I saw that their eastern generals were cataphracts, but all of my eastern generals are jav cav. I don't mind this too much but I think cataphract generals would be pretty sweet.
Any who, what I'm asking is, how do I get them? Do I have to download a mod or can I find a patch to do make the sweet change?

The Eastern Generals javelin cavalry bodyguards are the early general bodyguard. When the Marian Reforms happen all of your general's bodyguards (and everyone else's) will be upgraded to the armoured version automatically.

Ok, cool. Thanks for the reply.
I also have a couple of other questions more so dealing with my avatar.

How do I get a RTW one instead of the MTW2 ones?

Your current avatar is already an RTW one, right? :dizzy2:

Anyways, it's on the "Edit Your Avatar (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/profile.php?do=editavatar)" page, the RTW ones are in the folders in the dropdown with the "RTW" prefix. For example, for Greek diplomats' portrait, it's "RTW_Greek_Dip".

Lol, yeah. I kinda figured that one out after the post. :dizzy2:

I don't think the upgraded generals work unless its patched, and even then not all of them work. The Greek, barbarian, and Roman ones work, I've never seen a Cataphract general though...

Yeah, that's what I kinda thought. I downloaded the latest patch but once its on my desktop, is there anything extra I have to do. Like manually put it into the game files or something? Plus I see that when you pick an eastern faction in a custom game. Then General unit consists of cataphracts.

Just double click it to run it. It should find your RTW folder automatically.

When you play Custom Battles, you will see that all factions have both the regular General and the Armoured version as separate units. You can use either (or both).

Really? I must not have the latest patch then because when I go into custom battles, only the armored versions of bodyguards are available. For the roman and eastern factions anyway, I saw the Carthaginian bodyguard unit wasn't armored and I'm not sure how all the other factions are.

Mouse over the unit cards next to them to make sure you are just not missing them. They should be there.

StuntManMatt

Yeah, I checked that for a couple different factions. Still just the armored version. I've only done this for single player custom battles and not multiplayer ones, does that make a difference at all?

Your mod looks pretty sweet btw, SubRosa

Thank you Matt.

It should not make any difference at all between custom battles and multiplayer. They are basically the same thing, except that the latter has a human opponent and the first an AI one.

Take a look in your RTW\Data\Export_Descr_Unit.txt file. Do a search on east_generals_cavalry

You should get this entry:

type east generals cavalry
dictionary east_generals_cavalry ; Armoured Eastern General

Thanks, I'll sneak a peek tomorrow.

Yeah, so I checked all that info and mine doesn't say "Armored Eastern General" anywhere. It just says "Eastern General" and has all of the typical stats for an Eastern General. Oh well, I must not have the right patch or something.

SubRosa

Well that explains it. Start your game, go to Options, and you will see your version number in the upper right corner.

Yup, just checked in the options menu and found out that I'm rockin' version 1.0... awesome.
Need to find the right patches and such now.

Awesome. Now I can't load any of my saved games without a CTD. Will I have to beat the games as the Romans again or do I have to reinstall everything?

SubRosa

Savegames from 1.0 will not be compatible with 1.5. So you will need to start a new campaign. As far as unlocking the factions goes, it is simple.

Go to: RTW\World\Maps\Campaign\Imperial_Campaign\descr_strat.txt

Make a copy of it for a backup to be on the safe side. Then open it up. You will see the beginning looks like this:

;

Custom campaign script generated by Romans Campaign Map Editor

campaign imperial_campaign
playable
romans_julii
romans_brutii
romans_scipii
end
unlockable
egypt
seleucid
carthage
parthia
gauls
germans
britons
greek_cities
end
nonplayable
romans_senate
macedon
pontus
armenia
dacia
numidia
scythia
spain
thrace
slave
end

Change it to look like this:

; Custom campaign script generated by Romans Campaign Map Editor

campaign imperial_campaign
playable
romans_julii
romans_brutii
romans_scipii
egypt
seleucid
carthage
parthia
gauls
germans
britons
greek_cities
macedon
pontus
armenia
dacia
numidia
scythia
spain
thrace
slave
end
unlockable
end
nonplayable
romans_senate
end

Do not change the rest of the file. Just the beginning section I have shown here.

The interface in the campaign selection screen is only made to display 20 factions, so the rebel/slaves are not shown there even if you unlock them as above. If you want to play them you have to move one of the other factions to unlockable or nonplayable. I put the senate in nonplayable, but that is just a matter of personal preference. However, if you do choose to play as the Senate do not click on the Senate tab, otherwise your game will crash.

They don't upgrade automatically you need to retrain them in a city with a imperial palace (governors_palace and above for barbs) after marians reforms.
check export_descr_buildings:
