The two most popular versions of the song that I know of were done by the incredibly talented lark Joan Baez, and a group of five hoarse-throated, untalented adolescents who could do not but scream, The Animals. The Animals for some sorry reason became a cult band. (My theory is that people felt sorry for Eric Burdon since he had a branch stuck in his throat)
Anyway, it made me shake my head when I came over to Hungary and took my trip to Serbia, and I heard the Animal's version playing in both Hungary and Serbian radio, but NEVER heard the Joan Baez version.
I was wondering, which do the Orgahs like more, Animals (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg7jzi9JAkw), or the talented Baez (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDwK-Zir8ls)?
I am completely unbiased BTW. ~;)

Animals FTW! Baez is surely one of the most talented singers of the 20th century, but her voice doesn't fit something like the 'house' so good. She sings too ... lovely for a song like this IMO.

I never understood why people liked the Animals, but to each his own. :P
I actually think that Baez's lovely voice is what gives it so much power. It breaks you heart to hear her sing the song. (or at least mine :P) There just isn't that power with the Animal's version.

I have to agree with I of the Storm her voice doesn't fit the song very well.
