The adviser said on my first campaign that once all but 1 faction has researched a tech it becomes common knowledge and the faction that didnt research it gets it for free. Has anyone actually seen this happen? Now is this only major powers or does it include the minor nations too

My adviser never said something like that. Maybe keeping his own little secrets. I wonder if I should have him beheaded? :inquisitive:

I've had it happen as Prussia with the Seed Planting Drill.

why does it even matter? i mean.....what are the odds that EVERY single other nation will research it? especially considering most of the minor factions start with no schools (like the knights of st john, who never seem to leave malta).

never have i seen the pirates or knights of st john leave their starting islands, and, being that they have no schools, thus means there can never be any "common knowledge"

I would guess that only major factions are part of this

I have never had it happen to myself personally but I have seen the effects when I fought the Venetians once. Late game, they had grenadiers despite having no schools. (and never having expanded either.)

On a sort of similar subject, has anyone of you ever gotten new techs from conquering ships. I recall that this was one of the big promises but to be honest I've never seen it happen.

i think i had this happen today, i wasnt bothering with researching cavalry formations cos i was more interested in other things, then i randomly got some of them without researching them

as for the navy one no ive never noticed it but that doesnt mean it doesnt happen, despite the promises navy combat doesnt seem to be as bigger part as the might have liked.

if it sonly major factions, it makes sense.

in fact, i think the A.I. goes down a set list of researching techs that is always the same, thus giving you most of what you need quckly.

Well, remember that there is currently a bug which stops any naval invasions.

I think it's being fixed in the next patch! Due out tonight! :2thumbsup:

It espeically makes sense if the nations which "decide" if a tech is common knowledge are the major ones, while the minor, one-province, no-university nations benefit from this.

At least some nations have fixed predispositions towards certain trees. I'm sure Britain prefes the naval tree and France the enlightenment one. If you would play a game without researching anything, one could see who likes what in the diplomacy screen.
