why, well because i'm so fed up with steam and not being able to play without an internet connection. i see no sense in this whatsoever. i BOUGHT the game full of excitement, but i am very sadly dissappointed with it, to think that i bought a game for 60 hard earned dollars and cannot even play it on MY laptop at a friends house because of F@#$%%G STEAM! did i miss some disclaimer when i bought this telling me i was only renting it? that one has to be online at all times lest STEAM think i'm some bootlegging terrorist? or am i not to be trusted to update my OWN game, and need to have net nannying steam do it for me? i don't know and i don't care anymore, and as long as CA is partnering with steam i will refuse to "rent" anymore games from them, and will tell everyone i speak to about it not to either.
i have loved everything about this series since i started playing it in 2001, however i will not be playing this E:TW ever again.
Click on Steam to play it offline.
It is really that easy.

You're very, very, smart to have not simply have used offline mode beforehand. You can re-install it again if you want to, but whatever.
Click on Steam to play it offline.
It is really that easy.
Or he could just click on Empire.exe in steamapps\common\empire total war\
This thread is the definition of epic fail.

No no, that doesn't actually work.
If your pc/laptop isnt hooked up to the internet you should get a little popup saying it cant connect and asks if you want to play in offline mode. At least mine always does when I take my SFF pc on the road. I click on the offline promp and then fire up the game. You only need STEAM for the patches/updates for the game or to play MP.

I chuckled a bit when I read the OP.
Not a big loss really when you consider it. Whats one man in the grand scheme of things?
In all seriousnes, it is easy enough to play this game without being online. I mean really, if your only problem is that you do not want to install Steam on your laptop then that is your loss. Many on this fourm, myself included, have said many great things about Steam. You dont even be online, just have the program and run in off-line mode.
You get no spam from Steam, reliable servers for MP, and overall it enhances my personal gaming experiance.

Otto Khan - Sorry you smashed your game (Personally I think your a Muppet and should really go and see a counselor about your anger issues) but you do realize that you can play it without the DVD in the drive and because of Steam you can download it again at a later date as the game is registered to you. So smashing your Disks was a waste of time.
As people have already said you can play the game offline so I really can't understand what your problem is?? Were you trying to Bootleg the game for your friend and you are angry because Steam won't let you?
If you are ranting because you don't like Steam then I think that you might as well give up gaming on the PC as in the future most, if not all, high budget games will be released on a 'Steam' like system, so either you get used to it or give up and play on a console.
I'm personally getting a little bit sick of these people slagging off Steam as being 'BIG BROTHER' sheesh what have you got to hide and I bet you are using Microsoft Windows which is doing loads of things in the background. PAH:wall:
No no, that doesn't actually work.
I've done it.
*edit*
But it didn't work when I just tried it. Hmm, maybe they changed something in one of the patches.
Steam seems batter and more reliable than SecuROM my sister got Spore for Christmas and we had no end of trouble to get it to work in the end we phoned the customer support to get it to work after there online support failed. Where as Steam and Empire just well worked.

Hmm, come close to smashing it myself a few times but not due to Steam, which I have found works ok. The frustrating CTDs whenever I try to fight a campaign battle are my nemesis....

Yeah me too, I don't understand it. I can play the same battles in custom and it never CTDs, but every 1 in 3 campaign battles CTD, no matter how few troops are fighting. What gives?
Lol. You smashed a no-CD game because of something that you didn't know you could do?
Alright! ...

It's mightily frustrating. You are the only other person I have heard who has this problem. Why does it play on custom but not campaign???? I have been told that there may be several probs-
1) Not enough RAM, this seems feasible, although I have 2 1/2 Gig.
2) Wrong graphics card. I can't see how this can be the case-why would it play custom if the graphics card is not up to it???
Let me know if you work it out, I'd be your friend forever. It's a total game breaker for me. I have gone back to Kingdoms and M2TW.

Yea definitely will let you know. Right now I have a 2.67ghz dual core with 4gigs of ram and using geforce 8800gts with driver version 182.50. When I run custom battle, I am fighting with 2 full stacks and the FPS is good. I don't get it either, if its the hardware custom battle should have the same problems, right?
I updated the my driver about 5 min. before the patch started to download so I don't know how much of this is the new driver, but it happened before pre-patch without the new driver as well, only now I just get "Empire has stopped working (Appcrash)" instead of "Empire has run out of video memory".
So far I tried making the Nvidia settings higher for ETW but I don't think that worked. I am going to try the other solve that involves changing your empire.exe file later, haven't done it so far because doing those kind of things scare me :sweatdrop:
Edit:
vista 32-bit OS. wonder if upgrading to 64-bit will help solve issue.

i clicked play offline. nothing happened. ejected the disk tried again nothing. tried clicking everything that i could and still couldn't play.
you honestly think i'm that damn dumb? i have anger issues, not intelligence issues.
anything more than inserting the game disk and clicking play, is just damned silly.
You don't need to have the disk in the drive to play, at all.
Haven't tried offline mode yet myself so no idea how exactly that works.

Putting the disk in to play when you don't have to seems a bit silly to me unless you have a different version of the game than everybody else because to repeat what almost everybody has posted over and over:
You do not need the disk to start the game.
The executable in written to your harddrive. There is a start command on the disk, but other than the first time you loaded the game I can't imagine wasting the time to put the disk in just to use it's start command.
If you do not have a desktop icon then you should be able to start the game from your programs list.
If your settings on your Steam account are correct, you should get a message that your computer cannot connect to Steam and ask you if you want to play in off line mode.
If you get any other message such as you can't play in offline mode then there is another possibility, but you will have to connect to Steam at least once to fix it.
On the account tab of the settings menu on your Steam account there is a check box that
says "Don't save account credentials on this computer"
This is recommended when using a public computer--however if you have this box checked you cannot play off line. The message you get when you try to start the game will only tell you that you are not connected and thus cannot play.
If the game simply will not start then you may have to repair the problem by re-installing the game.
Cheers

I wouldn't go as far as saying your dumb, or you have anger issues, or that you are not intelligent...
But never go full retard.
open steam while online then click
"file" > "go offline" > "restart in offline mode"
It really is that simple, perhaps others should have taken the time to explain this rather than calling Otto Khan an idiot but bashing steam and destroying the disc was rather silly

Well you have to admit that its foolish on his part to not take the time to figure a problem out. Its also very ironic that he can't actually unown the game so he didn't actually get rid of it. :)

Actually I lot of people have this problem. I personally think the game either has a memory leak somewhere or since this game is not 64bit it runs our of virtual memory. I have a 64bit windows 7 and 12GB of ram and get that problem still. So it isn't a ram issue. Also it can't possible a video card issue and any serious person that thinks so is an idiot.

I dunno if Windows 7 has it but Vista has an option that enables > 2 gigs of memory that you ahve to do manually.

Trying to think of why this guy cant get ETW to work in offline mode, didnt you need to register/activate the game with STEAM through an internet connection before you can play it in offline mode? Im not sure, but I thought I remembered something like that. If that isnt the case, I have no clue why this guy cant get it to work.
This game and Steam really s~(#$. I don't blame you for smashing it. I have all of the TW games and add ons and this pales in comparison.

Extremely useful necro.
There's no option to play Empire offline that i can see. Sometimes, when my computer and modem have been turned off for 6 or 7 hours and i turn it back on, the modem tends not to respond for about 30 minutes, needs to get warmed up i suppose, whatever. Anyway, it did it when i woke up this morning so i decided i'd try and get Empire to work.
After 30 minutes of trying i have concluded that you can't play Empire when not connected to the internet. Which, even the most diehard of Steam fans and Empire fans must admit, is absolutely horrible.

Perhaps I shall quote myself
open steam while online then click

My computer that I use to play games is rarely connected to the internet and yet I am still able to play empire.

Yeah, you just need to have steam permanantly set on offline mode.
