View Full Version : Ideas on changing March of time conditions

With MOT constantly being a source of debate and the SPQR faction being in a somewhat sub-optimum position for when the player is playing most of the western factions (=> playing any western Hellene, Gallic or the Qarthadastim faction, it means you either spend decades fighting several triarii fullstacks every turn without retaliating or you have to use force diplomacy -which I consider cheating-), I would like to know players' opinions and the EB team's opinion on how it would be if the condition were tied to another faction and another area -
for instance, Antiocheia, Babylon or Seleukeia becoming a huge city or the eastern hellene culture building any huge city. Much more likely to happen IMO - though usually not within the first several decades.
If that would be too early, maybe rather something like "any one faction holds more than 30 territories" - or "any one culture slot holds more than 40 territories"...
The KH are especially screwed by the current way MOT works because they depend on the MOT for a rather vital unit and I have not yet found a way to get my hands on phalangitai in a "plausible" timeframe (by the time I conquer all of Hellas and start fighting phalanx fullstacks of Ptolemaioi and Arche Seleukeia every turn, all my strategoi agree that they'd like to recruit some phalangitai, and with Makedonia firmly integrated into my empire and the people very happy, there is not much argument against this - but the Romaioi somehow hold a magic device that prevents them from speaking their minds in council...).
KH should either play out historically (=> fail at achieving independence and then dominance over Makedonia) OR gain phalangitai by ~240BC latest. 30years fighting several phalanx armies every year and the related casualties should overcome even the most conservative olygarchoi.
This is a somewhat KH-biased perspective on the MOT, so I'd like to know your thoughts on this issue.
Whoooo, wrong forum... sorry... late at night here... Please forgive my bleary-eyed mistake and move this thread (or delete, if sufficiently annoyed)

Although this is the wrong forum as you mentioned....
A province requirement would be wrong, I would blitz it like hell and could only enjoy my early bodyguards for about 15 years.
What about a time limit, something 250BCish? Then you can always finish off the Romani without never getting the reforms, still a well enough time delay.
I like the KH but have never played them, still I can imagine what a pain it can be fighting the empires of the world as a hellenistic faction without macedonian phalanx formation.
My friend also had this problem, he wanted to trash Rome before it grew mighty (you know, the Pedites/Triarii fullstacks), so he took Rome quite quickly after conquering Syrakousai. Sadly, he could never field phalanx anymore then, making it a hard task to conquer the vast Arche...

The March of time is tied to the vanilla marain reforms which AFAIK are hardcoded, you can't alter the conditions.
The new units you gain (hysteroi, ect) could be tied to other reforms but the bodyguard upgrades cannot so there would still need to be some use of the marians.

edit descr_stat ; made Capua / Arretium large cities... get most of their buildings allready on (in expense of great advantage for Romani)... and give the Romani 100000 minai to spend early on will certainly give the march of time just in 7 or 8 years....
:idea2:
but this is ahistoric... :furious3:

add_population capua 10000
a couple times a turn and the romans will soon upgrade the city.

But such methods, in my opinion, I consider as cheating.

The Romani in EB are the "seleucid" scriptfaction, and the Roman scriptfactions are now factions are AS, Baktria and Hayasadan. The MOT is now triggered by seleucid and not by romans_julii, romans_brutii or romans_scipii, so you can change the triggerfaction to a certain degree. Also you can give the hidden "Italy" resource to other cities. Correct me if I'm wrong, I have no modding exeriences with the Vanilla Marian Reforms. Ceterum censeo Romam esse delendam.

In my KH campaign Romans didnt upgrade their city in Italy more than minor city. It was about 230BC, so i used add_population and process_cq for Capua and reforms came pretty soon.
Or, maybe is possible to add these console commands into the script? I mean about replacing script commands where romans get money (add_money) with add_pop and proc_cq instead? :idea2:

Maybe this would help?

or simply invade Italy, make a huge city then leave some puny garrison to allow romans to take them back...
result is known... and logical for roleplaying and better than cheating. this is my AAR extract for it.
After Pyrus died, Macedonians manage to claim themselves as the true Successor to prior Macedonian Kings. Unfortunately they had no time to relax. just after Macedonians captured Taras and destroy Epirot Kingdom, the barbarians from north who call themselves as Romani assembled a huge army to unite whole Italy under their banner. General Alexander (fictional of course :laugh4:) with the reinforcement sent from mainland counterattacked he manage to conquer Capua even he marched to Roma itself, but then the corruption and jealousy cost his life. Reinforcements stopped, and he retreated to Capua after a bloody battle with Romani he saved many of his man and fought like a lion but instead of watching all of his men dying he chose to retreat Capua. In grief, with no motivation he assembled a new army but of course it was very tiny in comparison to Romani Barbarians. He sent them Taras and he chose to defend Capua with his loyal companions. He defended Capua many years nearly sallied every season and Romani started to besiege again and again...
-----
King of Macedonia started to cry when he opened the letter from General Alexander, after Capua was fallen, and Taras under siege. One of the general Alexander's bodyguard took it from the general when he was about to die.....
It was written : "here my king, here is the award of my loyalty to your majesty, my blood. I hope it was enough..........." with the own blood of General. Though King executed all Romani spies and the traitors that started the gossip about the general's lust on throne.. it was too late and of course impossible to get the general back...
Taras fallen afterwards, Hellens were tortured or enslaved as the general Alexander tortured to death..... One of most civilized city in the world with countless beautiful houses and monuments was burned down....
