View Full Version : mid-game AI passivity example
Here's an example of AI mid-game passivity and the broken diplomatic engine. I am playing as the British. After having soundly beaten Cherokees, I made them into my protectorate, leaving them with Orleans and North Louisiana (they had conquered those themselves) + gifted them Texas.
They are my protectorate, but they're still at war with Spain (for taking Florida early in the game). Here's the onion: still about 30 years after I have gifted Cherokees Texas (giving them straight access to Mexico), they have done absolutely nothing about the unguarded Spanish province next to them... And we all know how active Cherokees are at the start of the game. It seemed, like something/someone had suddenly made them tame and lame.
I would understand that if they were bankrupt by paying me the protectorate fees. Far from that: they have 3 full stacks roaming their countryside + I've given them all the latest techs + cash bonuses every once in a while.

Well if this was a simlation I could see their point.
You've essentially handed their ass to them using musket lead, European tactics, guy's on horses with a bad attitude and those bloody great iron things on wheels.
To them it sounds like hell on earth when you attack and guess what...
The Spanish over the road have all of the same stuff.
I'm wondering if they get the feeling they could get their asses handed to them a second time?
On the other hand, maybe one or two stacks could test out the Spanish resolve and see if they cave in like they were known to do back then.

Well, it's not like it would have been the first time for these Cherokees... They've tested the musket lead, European tactics, guy's on horses already... On the very same Spanish in Florida (Cherokees prevailed); on 13 colonies (Cherokees took most of them over before I retook the provinces) and the French (they were at war with them too...).
So, dunno...

The Cherokee are very aggressive in the early game but I have noticed once they have suffered a major defeat they change to a defensive posture.
I don’t know if there is a time limit on how long they do this or if it is permanent.
It is reasonable if the AI chooses to defend what they have rather than risk being eliminated. You might check with some of the modders to see if there is scripting dealing with the issue.
I noticed that most Native american tribes only attack certain Provinces when they have these they stop and defend, even when I started funding them in one campaign fighting the British
i wonder and theorise that this is actually due to being your protectorate.
im my Vh/Vh Poland game i gifted my protectorate saxony massive amounts of land till they owned most of central europe, despite this and despite having Massive armies sitting bout they wont attack any1 even when i bring them into alliance wars. its quite odd. they had like 2 stacks sitting next to a french town when i declared and brought them in and they did nothing.
Just my 2 Cents
cheers knoddy

Hi knoddy, I am playing as Ottomans now and the Crimean Khanate proves there is nothing 'generic' in the protectorate design that would prevent them from expanding. at the start of the game, I helped the Khanate out with Russians, by conquering Kiev for them + a few years later I gave them Galicia. I created a small monster... 10 turns later they took Lithuania (on their own) and are besieging Warshaw now. It's all within the first 25 years of the game though. Who knows, probably soon Khanate will go passive...

have we confirmed that protectorates 'do' or 'don't' get counted towards your province objectives?

Check your missions page in the game. At least there, protectorates DO NOT count towards the campaign objectives.

thanks mate. :2thumbsup:
ye they def dont count, i just felt like making my game more interesting by giving myself a large ally. aside from russia. so i pumped saxony up like crazy giving them most of austria and all the minor provinces in central europe. but ye they still didnt help me in any of my wars :(
I wouldn't consider gifting the AI inordinate amounts of land and then wondering why it doesn't know what to a break down in the AI. Afterall it only does what it's told to do, and many of the minor factions probably are only after provinces X,Y and Z.
