6 Fav. General/Leader according to you/ Julius Ceasar
7 Fav. Unit in the game./ Gaesatae
8 Best history book./ The Complete Roman Army
9 Biggest mistake of a faction or leader./ Ceasar should have dismantled the senate once he was imperator. The senate was at that point nearly useless without a republic. As Tiberius mentioned this many times. Maybe Ceasar could have lived even longer.
10 Best military maxim./ ''The Rich did what they could, And the poor suffered what they must.''

7 Fav. Unit in the game: Again hard to choose, Pedites Extraordinarii or Thorikatai Admetous Basilikou (sp?)
8 Best history book: The Roman Army: Wars legions and campaigns.
9 Biggest mistake of a faction or leader: That retarded emperor Jovian who gave away all the provinces east of Syria for peace with the Sassanids!:furious3: If that was out of time span then I would say the decision of Seleukos II Callinicus, he lost a lot of territory, especially to Arsakes I...

3 Studying @ "General Engineering Science", aiming for "mechatronics" specialization.
So far, I have not been very successful at studying because I have "issues" and because I play around too much.
4 recently: Koinon Hellenon, Arche Seleukeia, Sab'yn - frequently changes depending on the campaigns I play
5 Thebes - but I do not yet know many ancient battles, so this is likely to change. I have a fascination for ancient Egyptian (pre-hellenistic and pre-persian) military but can not cite any particular battles.
6 Hieron of Syrakousai (the "gastrophetes"-guy)
7 atm, Hetairoi - but this frequently changes depending on the campaigns I play
8 I do not really own any specialized history books (yet), but I like
"ALEXANDER DER GROSSE" (sp: "Große"; long vowel=>"ß", short vowel=>double consonant "ss" but it's probably due to capital letters not existing for "ß") by Nicholas Hammond,
1997, translated: 2001 Ullstein Buchverlage GmbH, ISBN: 3 548 36747 X
a really compelling paperback book with some tactical sketches where appropriate.
Deals with the entire life of Alexander, and with Philipp's great achievements.
After reading it I am no longer sure if not Philipp was the greater one...
"Propyläen Weltgeschichte, 3: Die hellenistische Welt,
1962 Verlag Ullstein GmbH, ISBN: 3 549 05017 8,
part of a series encompassing ten books from pre-history to the early (see release year) space age.
9 Alexander - getting deluded into actually believing he were immortal, thus not bracing the Arche for the eventuality of his death
10 Eignung, Leistung und Befähigung
(Regretfully I find that it is hopelessly optimistic about human evaluation and rational but objective, as in "unselfish" judgement. That is, if you try to implement it globally. If ever successfully implemented this could solve some of humanity's problems.)
Antique favourites:
"Μολων Λαβε"
"De inimico non loquaris, sed cogites".
11 An addition to 10):
If you understand German, read
"Wer bin ich und wenn ja, wie viele?" by Richard David Precht,
2007 Goldmann Verlag, ISBN: 978 3 442 31143 9
An introduction to didactics, communication, ethics and general (sub-)conscience summing up neurology, psychology, philosophy - basically, a "self-related user-manual".
Answers (within the limits of current science) three fundamental questions:
What can I know
What should I do
What may I hope for
If you do not understand German - I don't know if a translation exists yet...

1: The once most important port in ze UK, now about to lose all her battleships .
2: In the 18th year of my life.
3: My A Levels start in about a week .
4: Romani Makedonia BARTIX!
5: Who can beat Thermopylae? Honestly...One of the most exciting and heroic battles to read and wonder about. I suppose its my favourite because its much more legendary and making a point rather than one of the greatest battles ever fought.
6: I am going to say Alexander, not because I believe he was the greatest military tactician ever, or because of his major victories. But rather because he had such ambition and fire that he literally took a small country to war and defeated the world's major superpower. Argue all you like, but Alexander had one of the biggest ambitions ever, all things considered, and he basically achieved it, even if he did go a bit nutty in the end.
7: Pfft!...um...This is boring and unoriginal, I know, but by golly, aren't elephants fun?
8: I don't know, I have so many favourites. Osprey's Rome and her enemies is very good, and I also really enjoy looking through Master of the Battlefield by Major General Julian Thompson. That is really good for anyone who likes reading about major battles and commanders. Its like the BBC show Time Commanders (R.I.P) but in a book. Its brilliant.
9: Dying...you really are shooting yourself in the foot with that one.
10: Well, this one is more of a quote, but I do so love it :beam:.
Saladin boasted that "if (Jerusalem's) walls were iron, yet would I take it," to which Richard replied, "If these walls were butter, yet would I hold them!"
I also am a big fan of Alea iacta est. If Caesar really said that, then it just gives me a brilliant incite to his character.
11: I'm always surprised by how many older people play EB and use the forums. Naive of me of course, but I've always seen games as a younger person's past time. I know many of the EB team are much older and actual proffessionals, but I still expected more teens than any others. Interesting.

Nice idea! My name is Sam. I've been a history buff for many moons. Mostly 20-21st centuries though. I got RTW not for the period, but b/c I wanted to be able to use real tactics in battle. RTW and EB helped get me into ancient history though.

(4) ummmmm, erggg (which one which one)... :juggle2: Aedui or Casse of the ones I've played. I like the variety from tribe to tribe.
(5) Marathon. Pheidippidus and all that, what?
(6) Ariovistus, who else? :laugh4: (fav, not best; he was stomped by G.J.Caesar) He was chieftain of the Suebi, according to Bello Gallico. In terms of a general I like for his battle record, I think he would be John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough.
(7) I'm quite partial to Cretan Archers myself.
(8) Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (still reading... :book:) Also A History of Rome by Taylor (?) Grant is a nice overall history of Rome from foundation to collapse. BUT MY FAVORITE EVER IS SUN TZU's ART OF WAR!!! WOW!
(9) Varus. For existing on the planet. He certainly didn't belong on the frontier, being a politician. Also Darius I for treating warfare as a way to avenge a personal insult from the Greeks. Cost him an aweful lot of men and prestige. Actually, nepotism (appointing relatives to important positions just because you're related) in general probably caused some of history's greatest mistakes.
(10) (A Greek messenger warns the Spartans of the Persians at Thermopylae, saying: "The Persians will blot out the sun with their arrows!) Dieneces: "If the Persians block the sun with their arrows, then we shall fight in the shade!"

Oh wait! As long as we're becoming acquainted, how many of you guys are/were addicted to the Civilization series? I've been on it since Civ III.
(10) (Leonidas' advisor warns him of the Persians at Thermopylae, saying: "The Persians will blot out the sun with their arrows!) Leonidas: "If the Persians block the sun with their arrows, then we shall fight in the shade!"
Just to point out, that wasn't Leonidas. It was Diomedes, a Spartan knight.

AHAAAA! I thought Leonidas didn't sound right! Thanks Beanerz!
See, this is why I joined the forum; helpful info and criticism to increase my understanding of ancient history.
Say, I have a question about the forums:
I'm doing a project about ancient warfare and weapons for an uncle of mine. He wants it for a class he's doing.
So first I wrote a (very) basic overview of ancient history from about 500 B.C. (Greco-Persian Wars) to the early Roman Empire period. I figured it was no good knowing about weapons if you don't understand who used them when.
Then I gave a brief description of Greek, Roman, Middle Easter, and Northern European weapons and armor. Kopis, xyston, gladius, akinakes, etc.
Lastly I am doing an overview of battlefield tactics employed by major ancient cultures.
Anyways, I said all that to ask: would it be within the scope of the EB forum to post my project? I thought it would be really cool to get some feedback from the guys on the forum, since none of my family (i'm homeschooling this year) knows much history.
It'd be nice to get critiqued on overall accuracy and structure, and details like good ole' Diomedes.
Anyways, thanks!

Awesome. Will do.
I expect I'll be done in a week or so. I'm done with the historical overview + the sections of Greek and Roman armor.
xiphos, kopis + machaira, xyston, sarrissa, linothorax, helmets (phrygian, corinthian, boeotian), hoplon, thureos, pelta, greaves (greek term?)
gladius, spatha, hasta, pilum, lorica hamata + segmentata, clipeus, scutum, galea/cassis
and I have yet to complete a smaller section on eastern (persian) and N. european weapons
falx, romphaia, soliferrum, Gallic broadsword (more accurate term?), a couple of Persian shields I can't remember atm (one is that wicker thing on vanilla eastern inf.), caetra, akinakes, etc.
It's a TON of fun, except I'm getting pretty tired of sitting @ the computer aaaalllll day long.
I actually used EB to provide some graphics too! I like the uniformity b/c most sketches u find online just don't fit. one is a painting, one a sketch, etc.

10 Best military maxim./ If you are short of everything but the enemy, you are in the combat zone. Murphy's Law (http://www.murphys-laws.com/murphy/murphy-war.html)
11 Anything else you wanna add or say../ As I wait patiently for EBII, I'm going to give Empire a shot once it comes in the mail.
Also Interesting Quote, "Mortui Tantum Terminem Belli Viderunt" (Only the dead have seen the end of war)
Just to point out, that wasn't Leonidas. It was Diomedes, a Spartan knight. No, his name was in fact Dieneces. Herodotus 7.226:
This then is how the Lacedaemonians and Thespians conducted themselves, but the Spartan Dieneces is said to have exhibited the greatest courage of all. They say that he made the following speech before they joined battle with the Medes: he had learned from a Trachinian that there were so many of the barbarians that when they shot their missiles, the sun was hidden by the multitude of their arrows. He was not at all disturbed by this and made light of the multitude of the Medes, saying that their Trachinian foreigner brought them good news. If the Medes hid the sun, they could fight them in the shade instead of in the sun. This saying and others like it, they claim, Dieneces the Lacedaemonian left behind as a memorial.
Polybios states:
"Although extraordinary valor was displayed by the entire corps of Spartans and Thespians yet bravest of all was declared the Spartan Diēnékēs. It is said that on the eve of battle, he was told by a native of Trachis that the Persian archers were so numerous that, their arrows would blot out the sun. Dienekes, however, undaunted by this prospect, remarked with a laugh, 'Good. Then we will fight in the shade'"
Ooh nice, I shall file that away in my mind. Thanks guys.

Somewhat close. Don't bother with my name, though, that's just something that popped into my head years ago (although 1944 is a significant year for my ancestors). I think I spelled out in no subtle terms what my favorite EB faction is. That should be a clue. :idea2:
And an attempt to stay on topic: I recently recruited a friend to EB with the lure of many "fantasy units" (a complete and utter lie, to be sure, but it worked). When he saw EB for what it was, he was initially turned off, but after a few hours, he was truly addicted and said that he would never go back to, and I quote, "the fantastical crap that is RTW [and WoW]." So, thanks to the EB team for helping my friend come to an epiphany!

Hmmm; past the Goths... past the Goths... lesse, after 400AD, 600AD, what major nation in the area comes next... Holy Roman Empire? But I don't know what a Roman banner in your sig would have to do with the HRE. Or should I be thinking more outside the box?
Well, as far as my thinking takes me, you are using the Roman banner with some connection to geography, not to Rome. So it has to do with Rome's influence in what was then Dacia.
Wait... do you/relatives hail from Romania? Cuz that was another frontline in '44. AHAAA! :idea2: ROMania??? I'm right aren't I????? Its about Romania isn't it!
Bingo! :idea2:
Actually, you could say ROMAN-ia (e-yah), since that is how it's roughly pronounced. But, yes, I carry the Romani banner for the role they played in extending their language and bits of their culture to the Dacians and forming the base for what is today Romania, to put it very simplistically.
My parents immigrated to America after Ceauşescu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolae_Ceau%C5%9Fescu) was executed in 1989. In 1944, my great-grandfather, a true patriot and leader of a local resistance group, was killed in action in the Battle of Bucharest, and so I try to commemorate him with my "name".
And so, I present to you a well-earned balloon. :balloon2:

Awesome! That's what I'm looking for. Input. As far as Dacian weapons, I only am familiar with the falx and sica. I assume that for shields they used... something along the lines of a caetra perhaps? round light shields, anyway; centergrip etc. I don't have much info on barbarian shields. 11 Anything else you wanna add or say../ I feel old, too; after I read the messages. :skull:
I like modding :laugh4: I wish CA would release a R2TW that may have more than 50 factions!
12 (you should have added) best tactic : "Double envelopment" and "Hammer and Anvil"
P.S. maybe best tip for game play : "Unfortunately the AI does not know how to manage the fatigue of its troops."

1. I was originally born in Holland (Zaanstad, to be precise), then moved to my father's hometown in Paros (that's a small island in the Aegean Sea, Greece). Recently moved to Heraklion, Crete, for my studies.
2. I'm 18, as per the 20 of December 1990.
3. I'm a student of the Physics Departments of the University of Crete.
4. Makedonia.
5. That's a difficult one. But I guess I'll go with Thermopylae, for the sheer epicness of what that fight would have been, and its impact upon the world for years to come.
6. Megas Alexandros, for obvious reasons. No man, in my humble oppinion, was able to surpass the man's geniosity.
7. Thorakitai Agematos Basilikou. They are absolute tanks, able to decimate virtually anything.
8. I couldn't say, really. I don't believe I have good enough knowledge of the subject.
9. If you're referring to reality, I guess that would be when Megas Alexandros let himself be killed in such a young age due to his lifestyle :beam:
10. Polemos panton men pater esti (War is the father of all), Heracletus.
11. Bean is a noob (sorry, couldn't resist)
In order to avoid any unwanted negative reactions, I feel like I have to say 11 was a joke, a sarcastic remark imitating something mini said in the Throne Room:smash:
