why can't i get past medium graphics?

hello everyone!

I had e:tw from the day of it's release here in the states, and at first i hated it. but after watching a friend of mine play it, i decided to get back into it.

one of the things that really bugged me before was that for some reason when i tried to change the graphics options it wouldn't let me go past "medium" for anything! I'm assuming this is because etw doesn't think my comp can handle anything past medium, but i just wanted to make sure i wasn't missing out on anything that could help me out with this little issue.

i played m2tw with everything set to the highest possible graphic settings and ultra large unit scales. i realize that the graphics in etw are much improved from those in m2tw, but i can also play games like oblivion at ultra high settings and other things.

i've got a $2000 macbook pro with vista installed via bootcamp, and can play any other game with much higher settings. is it a driver problem or something?

This should maybe go in the hardware problem solving thread and this probably won't be very helpful but...

can you be more specific about your computer? A $2000 macbook pro from 10 years ago is probably not the same machine as a $2000 macbook pro from last month. Just saying there's a lot of computers called macbook pro and they have different video cards.

if it's newish it probably has an nvidia 8600M, which I would guess is a bit wimpy for gaming. I'm only at a little over medium graphics with an 8800 GTS (320 mb) desktop card.

and I found this tip for nvidia cards helped me a bit, ( I turned off more of the checkboxes in the bottom half than he did, they have a major effect on lag for me )

and lastly zerg found an override to let older video card owners irreparably destroy their install, err, I mean get the game to let you select graphics it doesn't think your card can handle
