Hearts of Iron 2 is very cool. I'd advise you to buy HoI 2: DD, though. The tech tree is a bit developed, the AI is better, and nukes play a massive role in bringing a country down. In one game I was playing as Germany, I hit the USA simultaneously with 12 Hydrogen bombs on the major cities they had (I had conquered the entire Soviet Union) with ICBMs on Cherbourg and Kamchatcha. It earned them something like 57 dissent. Basically, rebellions started forming everywhere, and California and Texas formed as independent countries.
