Give this recipe a try. I made it for dinner tonight, serves 4.

3/4 stick of butter
2 cups of chopped onions
12 ounces of Portobello mushrooms cut into 1/8 inch slices
1/4 cup of bottled steak sauce *I used A1*
1 loaf of French bread, cut in half lengthwise
1 6 ounce package of sharp provolone cheese

Preheat oven to broil. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Saute onions 6-8 minutes until softened. Add mushrooms, reduce heat to medium, and continue cooking 5 minutes, turning often. Pour steak sauce over onions and mushrooms; stir.

Divide mixture evenly over bread halves and top with cheese slices. Broil 5-8 minutes, or until cheese is melted and top is golden. Cut diagonally into serving size pieces.

Served with a bowl of your favorite soup *my kids like tomato* makes quite a delicious meal.:2thumbsup:

I'm going to try it with pepperjack instead of provolone and see what happens.

3/4 STICK OF BUTTER?! ~

Could I possibly cut that down, or at least replace it with olive oil?! I'm pretty sure that's lethal!

Hehe, the best part about cooking is the experimentation and adjusting ingredients to ones own taste. Next time I'm trying bacon drippings instead of the butter. Pepperjack cheese sounds like a tasty change too.

IA gave me a great idea for creating spicy meatballs, chopped habanero peppers, that sounds delicious for those that like the heat.:2thumbsup:

I got plans for them meatballs, IA. We're having a little party at work for a friend who is retiring next month. A few of us are bringing a dish to pass. I'm bringing a big crock-pot full of those habanero meatballs in sauce and rolls for InsaneApache meatball subs. crank up the AC it's getting warm in here.

It looks like it is only being used for the onion/mushroom/steak sauce mixture. You could probably cut the amount of butter in half and have a similarily good result. You might want to up the amount of steak sauce a little if you do that though.

Have you tried portobello's? Quickly sizzled as Hosakawa Tito describes, they have the consistancy of rare steak, while, because they're mushrooms, they totally absorb everything they're cooked in and with. In other words: steak, without the blood or animal fiber.

This, of course inspires me to try porto/steakStrip/onion melt on toasted sourdough. Tomorrow night. I shall report.
