View Full Version : Post/Prog rock corner
Seeing all the metal maddness in this forum I had to step up and ask where the post rock/prog rock fans are. This thread is for all those people who like post rock like Sigur Ros, Mogwai and Explosions in the sky, but also for prog rock like Tool, Russian Circles and The mars volta.
Furthermore this is a place to recommend new music in the specific direction, since a lot of new creative bands are jumping on the "post rock" bandwagon.
Here is my first recommendation already: Grails - Silk Rd (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAnbR2a2IxA)

Man, you skipped over a lot of classic Progressive rock in that post... I mean, I'm not much of a fan, but I would think that no Progressive rock thread could even be started without Emerson, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B3UrB_dex8) Lake (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeQsZOQqO6I) & Palmer. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZj9g2t5t-s) The only Prog-rock band I really like, as all the others are too soft for me; but I would still suggest some Yes and King Crimson, as well.
I also gotta give a nod to Prog-rock's little brother, Space Rock, specifically Hawkwind: Master of the Universe, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvEtqGDFPA0) Brainstorm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL-hj5CdCYc) and Upside Down. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqukIUQrzNA) More standard rock, but I still love it.
I was already about to mention older stuff. But let's be honest; as good as the old stuff is, everyone can look up for the bands in the wikipedia. With the modern stuff it is more tricky, and that's what the thread is about.
Oh well...
I guess this thread did not deliver.
Woa, don’t give up just yet!!! :2thumbsup:
I am right behind you, backing you up! The Grails-tune, "silk-road", hit right at home for me! Great stuff and there is plenty of other stuff around as well so there is no reason to give up here. After all, most of the sheeples are essentially stuck in the little pink world of “Eurovision-Song-contest”…. So what the hell can you expect?!?
If you ask me, there is no reason to give this up, it is an excellent initiative and I’ll try to be around when I can and am not too busy with other things. At any rate, I'll be more than happy to travel some in the extremely cool lands of prog-rock! :2thumbsup: :beam:
Keep goin! You are not alone, you got me on this bandwagon as well!

Also jumping in although I am somewhat new to the softer and more obscure side of prog.
I've been listening to Hybris by Änglagård preaty heavilly this past weak. It's a really weird dense album which can probably best be described as a folkier red era King Crimson, but with there own distinct style. The music is mainly instrumental alternating between rythmic weird time signiture and softer keyboard laced folky pasages.

Fixiwee, I am one of the main metal maddness types around here, but I just had to stop by and support your thread on progressive rock.
I am a huge fan of some of the more jazz-flavoured progressive bands; stuff from mahavishnu orchestra just shattered me when I heard it for the first time. I also really appreciate some of Jean Luc Ponty's progressive stuff.
But we are talkin straight-up progressive rock! And on that note, I have to say that as much as I love metal and all that, I find that of all progressive rock borders upon genius to a much greater degree than anything I have ever encountered in metal realms.
...In fact of all the bands I have ever heard, probably the one that has blown me away most is the German progressive rock band:
Popol Vuh!!
I once read a review that mentioned that founder of popol vuh saying "Florian Fricke, back in 1971 had his finger on the pulse of the cosmos" ...that is by no means an understatement. Their 70's era music is sublime.

Hi guys, it’s time to contribute here I think…. Hope you like it people. :)
Ok, I believe these boys will qualify to this thread. Fairly obscure and unknown and doing pretty much prog-rock stuff I think (hope that this compensates for ‘em not being a modern band, Fixwee). Speaking of the delish stuff the Mahavishnu Orchestra unleashed in the 70’s, Kurando – I’ll put the spotlight on “Made in Sweden”, (yep, fellow countrymen to silly ‘ol me) this band were contemporaries of that glorious decade (at least as far as music goes). Less known yes, but they sure know how to play just the same! Enjoy!
Oh, and for the 2nd tune, “Lady G”, grab your nearest “friendly in neighborhood babe” and start to play. That is the music for it I think. If none are available – you could perhaps go to our local babe thread? And dream….

It’s really a shame that so few clips are available on this band….

Awesome, I used to host a prog-rock radio show. I'm a pretty big fan of the neo/symphonic stuff, like Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings.
Sweden really does have some good stuff, I think the Flower Kings are Swedish. Anyone here ever hear of Isildur's Bane (also Swedish)? Their stuff is impossible to get here in the states but I do have a recording of them, really mindblowing stuff.
And of course I love the Master Himself, Mr. Frank Zappa!

That was out of sight! Thanks for posting Ax.
I am humbled to admit that I have never heard these guys before, but I guess in a way that makes me lucky. Imagine how good it is to hear them for the first time, yo!
