Hi guys,
Found this browsing the manual today:
"A bishop or cardinal will also make it harder for an inquisitor to convict and kill someone for
heresy in the same province."..."(inquisitors) will be less effective in provinces where there is a Catholic Bishop or Cardinal."
Is this true? And if so, how great is the effect of having the bishop's/cardinal's protection?

Definately true, and good to remember if you are moving your inquisitor through your territories or if you want to defend yourself from inquisition.
As to how much of a defense bishops or cardinals are, haven't a clue. I had one inquisitor start a general inquisition in a territory with 5 bishops in my current HRE campaign, but the inquistor in question was there for some 25 years I think.
I have no idea how effective they are, but it does seem to offer some protection. The mechanics on Inquisitions are not real clear to me, there are a lot of variables in place. Valour of the Inquisitor/Grand Inquisitor, valour of the target, piety of the target, zeal of the province, and presence of Bishops or Cardinals. The old numerology thread doesn't have anything on it, neither does the agents thread. The large number of variables probably makes it difficult to determine a pattern and figure out the formula.
IIRC, 2 Cardinals should essentially "cancel out" an Inquisitor. For a Grand Inquisitor, I think I needed more like 4-5 Cardinals, but my memory's a bit fuzzier in that regard.
As for Bishops, they only seem to be around 1/4 as effective. Assuming that's more or less accurate, that would translate to needing roughly 8 Bishops to counteract a regular Inquisitor, and 16-20 Bishops to nullify a GI.
Probably best to take those numbers with a grain of salt, though, since it's been some months since I've played a campaign for any real length of time. (I really need to get back into the game!) :dizzy2:

This seems a little odd to me, as for other uses only one agent is taken into account. (eg spies causing unrest). :inquisitive:
And as for inquisitors, they have three effects.
1) Raising zeal
2) Burning populace
3) Burning targets
For 1) I would imangine there was no effect. For 2) gaijinalways suggests they can be held off for some time (but how long?). For 3) I guess it could be tested somewhat, though there are many factors. Though I'm contend that I can brace my generals a little with bishops and cardinals, I would like to hear others take on the number of agents needed. I certainly wouldn't run around moving 20 bishop pieces...

You could just kill the guy, I used to love assassinating people.
True. The problem, however, is that inquisitors tend to be notoriously difficult to kill. I've always needed a 3- or 4-star assassin just to have a semi-decent chance at taking him out....and even then, they still often fail.

I guess I've always sort of cheated when it comes to assassins... I always quick save before the attempt if it goes badly I quick load and try to kill someone else until it goes according to play... thus building up really strong assassins.

That can certainly work. I find, however, that I have only limited patience for constantly doing the save/reload thing. Plus, it just doesn't seem very....sporting. ~;)
Personally, I prefer to train up my assassins by using them to capture enemy agents in my own lands. I just tear down my Border Forts (or preferably, not build them at all), stick my assassins in the designated provinces, and just let them capture enemy assassins and spies. Given the way AI factions tend to spam agents, my assassins on "home security" duty tend to valour up quite quickly....and just as importantly, much more safely. ~D

Oh wow I never really thought of that to be honest lol.
I didn't know they gained honor by catching people..
I can't remember very well, it has been a long time since playing this game.
But do assassins have cut scenes? I remember them in Shogun, I used to love those, had wanted to see more of them in post games.
can't see them killing people if you are jst security though :embarassed:

The trick is to tear down your border forts (at least once you have an assassin stationed in the province in question). If you don't, then the border fort gets credit for capturing enemy agents, and the assassin won't valour up at all.

Sadly, there are no assassin cut scenes in MTW. Regardless, though, they *will* kill/capture enemy agents if stationed in your own territory.
I kind of like that there are no videos in MTW- Sure they're cool a few times but they get annoying. I like the short, sweet message notifications. And also, as a side-note-- If you hold syria you will be able to train assasins with +2 valor if my memory serves me correctly.

Yet another reason to love playing as the Eggies/Turks. ~D
