Okay, so I used to use GNU chess (On a Mac) but it's been awhile and I was wondering if anyone knew of any, well, more modern (freeware/shareware/cheap) chess games. I'd prefer it wasn't browser based or ad supported, but if you've got a favorite browser based one I'll give it a whirl.

Matchmaking/rating services are a negative, I have no desire to play against anonymous opponents.

Thanks! :2thumbsup:

There is one called Arena. Its for free, and I couldn't beat it yet.

You can download Fritz 5.32 (http://freechess.50webs.com/fritz.html) completely free, but it is only for playing against the AI.

Just depends on what you are looking for.

I have played for the last 5 years on a site called - www.letsplaychess.com.

Very good site, costs £10 per year and the level of the opponents are a good quality.

Good Old Games (http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/) has a few classic chess games at budget prices. Battle Chess (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/battle_chess_special_edition) was always a favorite of mine when I was a kid. Old graphics, but funny. I'm not sure how good the AI is, since I haven't played it in about 15+ years. It's only $6 though.

I also remember that the Chessmaster series was pretty decent. GOG has Chessmaster 9000 (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/chessmaster_9000) for sale for $10. I never played that one, but it's a lot more modern than Battle Chess, it looks decent, and the entire series has a reputation of being very advanced. I doubt you'd be able to beat it on its toughest levels.
