Hey guys I will be a total newbie to the game, I'm wondering on your opinions on weather or not to download EB straight off or rather get to grips with the original first?

After doing some reading on here it seems that EB would be best suited for me as I love all Roman History and to see such dedication to historically accurate gaming is very rare. But if it's better to get togrips with the original first, I would rather like to know.

I depends if you have experience with other strategy games. If you have, you could start with EB, but chose a "easier" faction, like Romani or Karthadastim (Carthage). Learning by doing is still the best in my opinion. So try to start with EB, perhaps on a low difficulty level. If you have problems you can still switch back to vanilla to improve there first. Start with Vanilla RTW first, play the tutorial and start a campaign. And when you're bored of that, begin playing EB.

That way you get the hang of the game AND by comparing EB to Vanilla RTW you'll appreciate the work the EB-team has put into this even more.

these fora are a great resource for players new and old alike, so i'm glad you tracked them down. i'd agree with zett: you probably can dive in and start playing, but bear in mind EB does not offer the tutorials that vanilla RTW does, so depending on your ability to pick up a game, you might want the tutorials/a first taste of the game mechanics from RTW.

as you've said you've done some reading, i'm sure i don't need to say this (but i will anyway): do read the faq, and have a root around for notes for installation, dealing with common bugs, and commonly encountered difficulties. you can avoid loads of issues by reading the faq and doing searches on here. i'm sure you already know that.

Are you completely new to Total war or just RTW? Either way I recommend playing at least one campaign of the original to get the feel. You need not even complete the campaign, just play a few dozen turns. EB is significantly more difficult than vanilla.

And read the FAQ! Most seem to think "ya, whatever". NO! Read it.

Seldom, he is an exception. Mostly he remains passive. Kyon acts like a Stoic. Fata volentem ducunt nolentem trahunt. That's more or less his mental attitude. He accepts his fatum, cause he is aware of the fact, that if he doesn't accept it, it will turn out worse.

For exmaple the beginning of The Sighs of Suzumiya Haruhi, they are both sitting in a café and it is Haruhi's turn to pay the bill. At the end he has to pay it. Haruhi leaves him no other choice and he doesn't even try to protest.
"Let's go! We can't separate into two groups today, so let's just wander around! Oh yeah, I (Haruhi) forgot to bring my wallet today. Here's the bill."
While I (Kyon) was still staring at the eight hundred and thirty yen bill, thinking about how to protest this atrocity, Haruhi grabbed my coffee and finished it. That left me with the impression that she wasn't going to accept any protests. She then marched out of the restaurant, and stood in front of the automatic door with her arms crossed.

Ok, you could argue, that Kyon is sometimes able to convince her to stop with something, just like in The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi, as they play the Amateur Baseball Tournament. Kyon is able to stop her, but only after they had won the first round. It is like the Romani are finally capable to stop the Makedonian Phalanx, after they had lost Roma. Ceterum censeo Romam esse delendam.

Just because he's passive most of the time doesn't mean he doesn't hold sway.
There are quite a few examples in which Kyon stops her crazy behaviour....

Then there's the "John Smith" ace-in-the-hole.

I'd like to welcome you to the forums Matt! I remember when I joined, and I don't regret it at all. These forums are full of great users willing to help out if you've got any questions or comments, etc.

I can only tell you what my personal experience was with RTW and EB. Maybe four years ago my friend let me borrow and play RTW. I enjoyed the concept of turn-based strategy combined with real-time tactics, but I have to say I wasn't fully convinced of the battle sequences. I stopped playing for a couple year, and then I came across EB (around 1.0 I believe) and lo and behold I was reinstalling RTW just to try this mod, and have not regretted my decision since.

So what is my conclusion? That if one gives RTW a little go, he or she can then install EB and truly understand and appreciate the great amount of modification that has gone into the original game. A truly wonderful piece of work, I must say!
