View Full Version : Texas - ground-to-air missile launched at civ airplane?

FoxNews and the The Houston Chronicle report that last Friday a civilian airplane coming from Bush International and headed for South Carolina was targeted by a missile. This at 13.000 feet. It was a near-miss (30 feet), according to the pilot who is ex-military and apparently knows his missiles.
Is this plausible? Do we have people on the forum who are familiar with ground to air and can tell me more?

so, heres a link to the article (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,524539,00.html) (sorry it was the only souce i could find in 30 seconds).
ok SFTS, what did you do this time?... :rolleyes2:
Technically it is plausible as the max ceiling of man portable missiles is 11-15,000 feet or so IIRC.

Does the range of these missiles cover the Atlantic coast off Brazil? :inquisitive:
Well, for the stinger it would be just above maximum range according to wikipedia, not sure about bthe russian counterpart or whatever other systems exist. Now the question is why would the government try to shoot down a plane? Was the pilot the only one on board? Does the government want to silence him? Is he involved with the mafia? Was it an airbus A-300 with 130000 people on board or was it a Cessna carrying some heroin? Did they find any suspect fingerprints on the plane? :inquisitive:
There are supposedly a lot of amateur rocket-builders in that area. I find it rather hard to believe that it was shot to take out that plane, if they, whoever they may be, can get their hands on something like that wouldn't they know about altitude-limitations?

Lots of Country Clubs and golf courses east of that airport, and Lake Houston nearby. No wonder they can't find the rocket or debris.
Second incident recently. If the rocket(s) are home-made, NASA will want to hire the builder, an obviously talented guy. If not home-made, then certainly military in capability - and therefore highly worthy of investigation.

Something tells me this wasn't a case of local yokels going ballistic, but hey.

See here (http://www.texnet.net/ccent/rockets/schedule.htm) for links to the many, serious, rocket-hobby clubs and groups in the area.
Maybe someone (or several someones) preparing for the "launch season".

Maybe someone (or several someones) preparing for the "launch season".I don't see any launches planned there. No FAA flight restrictions for the area on 6/2 either. Besides, the FBI and County Sheriff would have investigated them by now. They can read the yellow pages, too. And something tells me this sort of thing doesn't happen twice in a row in the same area.
But yeah, for all we know it might have been David Carradine's parting shot.
So you still think it's them (the illuminati)?
If it is indeed a terrorist attack my money would be on some extreme-rightwing group trying to sabotage Obama's efforts. A downed plane would be all too convenient.

Anyway, looks like this incident has been defused (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/metro/6460030.html).

I don't disagree with your line of reasoning (in regards to what group is the most likely to spawn terrorists), but that alleged terrorist plan seems to be much the work of the government informer. He gathered the group, pushed them to make plans to attack, and (IIRC) went for the weapons. So I'm skeptical that those guys, unconnected with the informant, would have been that dangerous.

So I'm skeptical that those guys, unconnected with the informant, would have been that dangerous.I agree. It's just that I disagree with Fragony that the hillbilly militia would be the most likely candidate. Firing missiles at airplanes isn't their thing. Something of that nature is much more likely to be the work of self-styled jihadists like those four jail converts, or like the guy in Little Rock who shot two soldiers.
It's funny how the authorities always downplay such incidents. The New York four were said to be just unstable people, not really terrorists at all. They had no ideological motives, it was said. No Sir. They just hated Jews and the U.S. government so they got organized in order to blow things up and kill as many people as they could.
Happens all the time, right?
Right.
Muha. I am always right.I already defused you ages ago.
