View Full Version : Status Pontificius (Papal States)
Any one any Idea why the Papal States are called the Italian States?
It's strange to see the Papel flag with there emblem on it and then called the Italian States. it was only in 1860 (long after the game is done) that the Papal States became only the Vatican (and even later the now known city state).
In previous games there was no problem calling them the Papal States, so why now?

No idea. TW games have always been a bit of a car crash between history and game -albeit fun games at that. Italy in the middle ages does not seem to be an area of much focus for accuracy in the past either: remember the "italian" faction in MTW?

its not like they play a large part in the game; at most they are trade partners. they really don't matter that much so.......the name doesn't either :)
p.s.: maybe they think it sounds cooler? i think knights of malta sounds cooler than knights of st. john, even if its not historically accurate

wow, you probably just managed to upset about 200+ members who think accuracy is essential in these games. :clown:

The game appears confused in regards to the name of the Papal States, in some files its called the Papal States, in others the Italian States. And if it wasn't for a mod, their faction leader would still be called "Minister" instead of "Pope".

Yeah, no kidding.
Well I like accuracy but that wasn't the reason why I posted this, it just seemed strange that it was called diffrently in MTW I and II it was called correctly. Plus as Mailman said in the code it is sometimes called Papal States.
