Basically how difficult it is to get from one level of the trait to the next. The lower, the easier to advance.

Not difficulty. Amount of points.

For instance, if a trait can have three levels with repective thresholds 3, 5 and 10. A character may still have 1 or 139 points in the trait. In his character sheet, it will say the highest level of which the trait points exceed the threshold.

1 point: no trait
2 points: no trait
3 points: level 1 trait
4 points: level 1 trait
5 points: level 2 trait
6 points: level 2 trait
7 points: level 2 trait
8 points: level 2 trait
9 points: level 2 trait
10 points: level 3 trait
11 points: level 3 trait
12 points: level 3 trait

And so on. Any number higher than 10 will also show the trait as level three.

As for difficulty of gaining a trait, that's determined by the chance values in those triggers that award the trait.

Well, I thought saying "difficulty" would be the simpler way of explaining it, even though the word "threshold" is what you described. Is that not right though? The higher the threshold, the more difficult it is to advance to the next level of trait. That is what Malrubius himself said. The more points you need, the more difficult it is, right?

Ah ok thanks for this explanation., another thing is there a limit to the amount of traits that a FM can get? those that aren't conflicting ones i mean.

There should be but in comparison to ancillaries whose hardcode 8 maximum,
traits are much more advantageous than ancillaries. These fact is my main concern for my main mod :-(

No, it's not difficulty.

As an example, I think we all agree that the Reformator trait is a pretty difficult thing to get. That has a threshold of 1 for being a potential reformator and 2 for actually being one.

Compare this to the Supervisor trait. I bet there isn't a single EB player who hasn't had at least 20 guys with this trait, and that has a threshold of 10.

Similarly, the BattlePoints trait determine a lot of workings in the aftermath of each battle. This has thresholds of 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20. It's quite doable to gain 20 BattlePoints in a single battle (and indeed you need to, for it is reset for each battle).

Certain traits are set up as antitraits, which means only one of the traits in each correlation can be present. Other combinations can happen, some of which can be seen as conflicting to a degree, yes. For instance, a general can be an optimist by nature but be in a pessimistic mood currently.
