a friend of mine told me how Americas Army 3 (http://americasarmy.com/) is available for pre-release via steam.
i am actually excited for this game. Overmatch looked good, but i couldnt play it because they had that deploy program, which i couldnt install because of NET Framework 3.5 would install.
but now i can play AA3. look really good and promising.
anyone else planning on playing it?

I loved AA and AA:SF, i even played with some Orgahs for a while ages ago. I think Sinan and a few others, can't remember who. We had a blast.

I'll give it a look, if only to see how the game has evolved. :)

Atleast it's still free so no harm in trying it out.

theres a closed beta out now, so i just got in, and downloading now. hopefully that will tide me over until next week.

ok, i got the beta. its actually pretty fun. the training courses are fun, but can be annoying if you dont pass the tests, because then you have to start over.
its a 3 gb download for the beta. took me 3.5 hours, but i dont regret it.

Very grateful for the Info, Hooah, but remember it's a closed beta. If you had to agree to an NDA then don't share too much.

That aside, how do you like the game? Is it fun? Is there anything about multiplayer that you can share?

ooo thanks Monk. i forgot about the NDA.
i actually havent gotten up to the multiplayer yet, but i assure you i will soon.
since there was training excercises in AA2 i think its ok to disclose the info on the training, right?
anyhow, Rainbow 6 Vegas is coming in the mail today, and since my internet connection isnt the best at times, i think ill be preoccupied for the next week until the full version of AA3 goes live.

ok, AA3 has been released, but there is such a mad rush for it, the servers are clogged...
and even though i preloaded it, i cant play it.

Playing now however the auth servers are completely screwed up.
They hardly work.
I just passed the markmanship training and now the auth server is screwing up and looks like I have to do it again.

Edit: Ok, seems my score for the obstacle course didn't count either despite the server actual went through. So I have to complete that one again as well.
And this is just gold, I can't even exit the game because of the auth server.

to quote the AA team:

As we counted down to this release at 3PM today, none of us could have imagined the incredible number of players who would try to download and install this game at the same time. Due to this massive number of simultaneous connections, we're having some trouble keeping up with the demand.

This is also placing a tremendous load on our Authentication Servers, which may temporarily be causing some gameplay performance issues.

That's the bad news.

The good news is that absolutely everyone here at the Army Game Project, and our Partners, are working to resolve this problem, and you should see an increase in both accessibility and gameplay performance very soon. Once the load balances out a bit, both these elements will improve dramatically.

We are grateful for the overwhelming interest shown for America's Army 3, and we appreciate your patience. All issues will be resolved as soon as possible.

If you have issues or concerns, please email our Community Managers at aacm@americasarmy.com.

Thanks,

America's Army Game Project

Now I can't even log in.
Good thing this game is free.

Almost every version has had auth server problems when it was new.
One reason could be that they do not go for more servers for those few days when a new version is out because most of the time that capacity is not needed, so when everybody jumps at it at once, the servers can't handle it. Just wait a bit I'd say.

As with anyone using steam and online services, you can see how many are getting the game..
They should have prepared for this. It's been over a day since it got released and you still can't play the game because the servers are shot to hell.
Again, if people had to pay for this it would have been the end of it.
Just figured the US army could actually plan ahead and make sure they had some good servers to handle the new players but apperently not.

well, apparently the AA3 team didnt expect so many people trying to download it.

and after all, its the army.

well, i finally got to play the first version. as of now, i think its so dumb how i worked so hard to qualify for training, and now i have to start over. and its laggy like hell, and freezes from time to time.
fail.

I hate the weapons familiarization training. I qualified with a straight 100%, and it recognizes this and shows it on the final screen, but fails me anyway.

I don't think it's necessarily that, think there are 10 million people playing the game every day for the first month, after that, 9 million people lose interest and play less frequently or not at all anymore. So for the next 3 years they are left with 1-2 million people a day but they run enough servers to support 10 million, they now have at least 4/5 servers that are completely superfluous and to avoid that they prepare for 1-3 million people or something from the start and accept that the experience of users in the beginning will be less than splendid but over time it will become better. Most businesses do it that way, it's why some downloads of popular stuff on steam or elsewhere are really slow, providers aren't going to spend millions just to satisfy their customers for a single download/event. Unless perhaps the customers are willing to pay a lot for the servers every month.

Haven't gotten to try it yet, seems like my old account isn't working, gonna make a new one over the weekend or next week, though next week we'll get the ETW patch...

Well the servers seems to be overall working however there are still major issues with saving stats.
Some people has said that you should wait around 12 hours after you have done a training event before being able to continue to the next one.
The servers are that slow.

I'll check it out when all the problems are resolved.

Well, I was just trying to explain it, apparently the problems are really bad and the dev team has been fired already (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/59202).
Looks like the army took the consequences rather quickly.

quick update: An ex-developer writes down his point of view (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/48433/Americas-Army-3-Developer-Comments-On-Closure-Quickly-Silenced) and his post was quickly deleted, haven't read it yet myself, but maybe we can have some nice drama now. ~D

Well, I suppose I'll delete it from steam now.

AA:SF you say? How many training missions and honor grinding fights do you have to complete to be able to use the SF part?

EDIT: An old, foreshadowing post from a developer about Army and Navy political infighting and poor management (http://www.americasarmy.co.za/forums/index.php?topic=1324.0;imode).

When i played you had to be an expert marksman as well as complete a ridiculously hard sneak mission. if you could do those two things, you could get your Special Forces badge.

word from the devs:
dont bother with the training missions. they unlocked and completed them for you. (http://forum.americasarmy.com/viewtopic.php?t=299201)

So I wonder when the Insurgents (ex devs) will hack the system? I take it the Army's response will be to bomb a church somewhere in Iowa.

I wasted too much time on that game:

http://battletracker.com/playerstats/aao/69787/Skafsgaard/

Notice the hours played on Urban Assault, Hospital, CSAR, or McKenna :dizzy2:

But yea, Sinan and I and some others had a blast

Husar
07-30-2009, 14:43
Yeah, that's nice Mr. Skafsgard, I also got to >800 on AATracker(not counting the hours before I signed up there) but haven't picked up AA 3.0 yet since it seemed to be such a debacle on release.

Hooahguy
07-30-2009, 16:05
i could never get into the game that much due to the only maps that had servers were bridge (which i hate) and urban assault.
