Got myself in a right mess now. I tried editing the main.pack file to get rid of some of the fantasy units in the game. But when I came to test it the game crashed everytime I tried to enter the Grand Campaign.

Not a problem I thought, as I'd been careful to take a back-up of the file before I edited it. So, restored main.pack from the back-up, but the game still crashed.

Weird I thought by no matter I have a complete backup of the entire Data Folder. So, restored the entire data folder to its vanilla state. Still the game crashed.

Really strange looks like I'll have to re-install. So, I did 'twice' using the steam install option, it still crashes. Now I've gone right back to the orignal CD's I purchased and I'm installing the original unpatched version of the game.

If that doesn't work then I'm screwed, I have no idea why its stopped working.

Maybe you could consult with some of the guys at the modding forum?

I wish you the best of luck, but there are some odd things about this game.

try removing the C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAMEHERE\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Empire folder, maybe it let to a config file being messed up.

edit: oh, and your save files are in there ( as you probably know but just in case ) so copy them somewhere

that worked for me, mine started crashing from the Grand Campaign button with no modifications on my part whatsoever.

Yep! that worked for me too. God knows why these files aren't purged anyway if you uninstall the game.

Games commonly keep the custom user settings and save games, others ask if you want to be rid of them during uninstall.

If that hadn't worked, we would have to delve into the deep darks of the registry.
