View Full Version : I'm an idiot

I was besieging Numantia as the Romans with one of my best armies. 4 silver chevroned Camillan Hastati, 4 silver chevroned Camillan Principe, 4 silver chevroned Triarri, two slinger units, two light cav units, and two top-notch generals. The Luso's only had two units of speamen and one light swordsman with a FM.

So, they sally out. I'm like, I don't want to waste my time and risk a CTD with a battle I know I'm going to win. So, with my first cheat of the game, I decided to auto_win the battle.

But, being slightly zoned out, I wrote auto_win attacker. I autocalc the battle, and am shocked to find my entire army was decimated. Like, annihilated. Maybe four or five barely alive units left. I'm like, shit. Shitshit. That was ridiculously retarded. So, to top it off, I decide to hire all the mercs in the region to continue my campaign or at least to hold onto what I had conquered, as my other armies were in Sicily and the Balkans, and to make things even better, the Polybian reform just hit the turn after my defeat.

Then the Luso's come out with a massive army of heavy spearmen, elite shock infantry, medium spearmen, medium swordsmen and skirmishers. Again, all I have is barely over a half stack of fresh mercs and the tatters of my former army. So, they attack me on a river crossing. I'm like, ok, maybe I can win this. So we duke it out. It takes forty minutes and 70% casualties on their side for my hodgepodge army to break, and both my generals are killed.

Now, although their army is in terrible shape, knowing the AI, it will pull another one out of nowhere. I have three Iberian cities, lightly defended with only minor reinforcement coming to help and two angry nations at my throat ready for revenge.

This is going to be really fun.

...you sure that was the Lusos and not the Numantia defense script...?

Reload? I mean, why would you continue to play? Silly, really.

In any case the Numantian (averican?) garrison wouldve been bigger than a few spearmen, and that defense script is a twat, I had to destroy that army 3 times with a pretty poor lusotannan army in my last campaign, you could try filling it with spies and assaulting on the first turn.

Ah well, good luck. i'm guessing you have a 'no reload' thing going on.

Actually, if I could reload I would, because they attacked me, defeated me and then I got my new turn and if you reload from the new turn the autosave goes from the beginning of the new turn.

Besides, it's too late now.

Then raise another legion, send them to spain and BURN THAT CITY TO THE GROUND. Come on, it the Roman way.

or you can raise some auxilary units and allied legions to help out... iberian scrutarii are quite effective light infantry =]

Multiple saves?

...........thats why you always, even when auto calcing, always save before battles.

This wasn't really luck, more like extremely bad judgement, or being tired. He basically used the cheat that guarantees a win by a defender or attacker, for the wrong side.

You're in a difficult situation but the only thing you can do raise an other legion and come and fight. But don't reload what's the point this way it will be more fun.

The attacker in a sally battle is coded as the besieged army. As far as I recall it says so in the original RTW manual - its because otherwise you could 'sally' and sit around inside waiting for the timer to elapse (provided they didn't have any siege equipment yet) and automatically winning.

If the AI hands you your arse on a plate, especially as Rome, you're honour bound to fight your way out:laugh4:

im not stupid, i read it. im just saying that, even then, you should still save. or something like that could happen.:wall:

Like A Very Super Marker said, I was just being really tired and lazy and not paying attention.

That's what I get for having a hangover when I play EB. But, although things seem lost, I plan to charge right back in and exterminate every city. Yay for Romani ruthlessness.

Well you could always use another cheat auto_calc to fix your mistake. As you said the battle was as good as won anyway. So use cheats to fix everything. Otherwise the game you are playing now has been affected by your cheating (negatively but it still makes you a damn dirty cheater =p)

kekailoa
06-15-2009, 07:13
Well, I'll just call it payback for cheating, because I normally never cheat at all. Like ever.

You can let them conquer Ibera, let the hellenes to the south take Taras and the southern cities then let Cathage sack Roma...

OR.

Build a new army and attack them, using the main Italian cities, you'd be using about 3 - 7 turns depending on barracks levels then ship them to the shores of Ibera.

BUT.

I suggest you restart your whole camapaign...

kekailoa
06-15-2009, 19:09
Why would I restart? I still have two top notch armies, the Iberians are almost as battered as I am, and I think I can still pull it off.

That sounds like a fun challenge. As the romans would say 'ad triarios redisse', or 'it has come to the triarii'. Truly a fitting moment for that expression.

as frustrating as auto_calc is, the heavy casualties and occasional losses I take add a lot to the game, and keep me honest... If I truly need to win, I'd better command the battle myself! What fun would it be to have an undefeated army after 200 years?

I mind not a loss, but a loss of a highly veteran army that one is fond of is not something I would let go without reloading. I am surprised you would not reload. If you want things to be more difficult, just take that army away to some other place, either by ship or by foot.

kekailoa
06-17-2009, 06:36
I would be really pissed that I lost a veteran army too normally, but, the turn after I was defeated, the Polybian reforms came through and it seemed a waste to retrain anyway, because I was going to have build new armies in the first place. The army was really good, but I needed to get rid of them somehow and at least they died fighting.

Update on campaign: The Luso's besieged Emporion, assaulted in one turn and I just barely beat them off by the skin of my teeth, totally eradicating their army to the last man as the AI is stupid. I alos bribed a large army of Samnite rebels, combined them with other Samnites that I had bribed earlier, shipped them to Iberia and they're now swatting the Luso's like flies. Back in Italy, a new manipular army is being trained and will be ready in about five turns. I also beat back assaults on the two northern Iberian towns I took.

I once lost my best legionary army and leader, silver chevrons the works, to Pirates of all things, I did not reload accepted it as one of those twists of fate the Gods send to annoy us. Made the campaign a lot more interesting as I had to really fight out of the mess.
Remember the senate couldn't reload after Cannae!
