View Full Version : Underdog to SuperPower
I played a Romanii campaign a while back where Pontus went apeshit and took over all of Turkey, Armenia, and half of Seleucia. In a Carthaginian campaign, Baktria basically replaced most Seleucia entirely. Anybody see anything like this with the usual pushover nations?

Pontos in my campaign has gone on a rampage as well. All of Anatolia belonged to them minus Pergamon, which retained independency (even though occassionaly faced with an assaulting army). That is, until Basileus Alkyoneus "Philopator" decided to thwart their plans of further conquest and sent his son Perseus with a Royal Army.
I'd post a picture, but I'm quite bored. I don't think I remember seeing any other "underdog" faction become too powerful. Maybe the Sab'yn, in a campaign a guy posted over at the Faction Progression thread. Those desert monkeys managed to capture Antiocheia and hold on to it in his campaign.

Pontos in my most recent campaign looked to be on its way to becoming a superpower, until they folded incredibly quickly when the Ptolemys attacked them. Baktria controls just about everything east of the middle of Persia or so, and is locked in a never ending sturggle with Ptolemy, which had taken over the Seleucids (but lost Alexandria and Cairo to Carthage, amusingly). I have an older campaign where Greece won out against Macedonia and Epeiros, then went on a rampage in Asia minor...
I've also seen the opposite lately, with superpowers imploding. The Seleucids had all but destroyed all of their neighbors in that first campaign I mentioned, and were knocking on the doors of Alexandria itself. Even all combined their neighbors shouldn't have been able to dent their empire, but a few decades later when I checked, they had been just about destroyed, and didn't hold out much longer. In the same campaign the Arverni had taken all of Gaul (with some help from me, playing their allies the Casse), and seemed to be on their way to taking Iberia, having gained a foothold in Emporion. Then the Romans attacked them and they collapsed in a couple years. Wierdest thing. I sent some spies around and the Roman armies weren't that great that they should have won so quickly, Mostly Vigiles with a smattering of better troops.
This is one of the things I love about EB, it's nice to see some of the smaller factions kick the usually huge ones out. In my luso campaign the getai captured the whole peloponese and forced KH and the maks into asia minor.

In my current Romanii campaign Pontus pretty much did the same. They were allied to Rome received some nice handouts and military intervention against the Ptolies in Judea, but at one point their empire stretched from Byzantion to the Indus.
Folowing the inevitable clash with Rome as of 9AD they are left with Persia and Bactria fighting the Parthians.
Only 5 years to go:beam:

Seems the Pontioi have some real potential to grow into a powerful Empire. Too bad their armies in my campaign suck. Big time, that is. Faced a much more numerous army of their composed of (mostly) Gundi Palta (or whatever their name is, the Eastern Skrimishers), Hoplitai Haploi and some Galatai and kicked their arses bad. I did see some Kuarothoroi near Amaseia, though. Not to mention those dreaded Tindanotae...

What I've never seen in EB is AI Hayasdan becoming an empire...

Indeed. They seem much more interested in going north for some reason. Although, according to MAA's theory (or something he heared, I don't remember), the AI tends to expand north, then clockwise. Or something.

I'm seeing (roman campaign) the Sweboz empire growin larger and larger: they hold the entire Germany and they steamrolled southward, taking Mediolanum. Arvernii and Aeduii seems to be unable to stop them, and now the Sweboz are attacking me. Damned Gaul's sissies XD
Pontus had been annihilated by the AS, Hyasydians are battling against the Sauromatae, Pahlava and Baktria are fighting the AS but with little success.
The Saba'ean (?) started very well, taking the eastern coast of the Red Sea and taking the Sinai and even Alexandria. After that, Ptolemies and Seleucids pushed them back into Arabia...
THe british faction had gained NOTHING in the whole game!!!
Casse never moves at all. They just sit on their bums on the sand.
They act like Scotland in M2TW.
In all my campaigns, AS is almost destroyed in the first decade. Baktria holding everything east of Persepolis.

That's true, except once they move to kick their cousin's ass

They usually take over the whole island and Ireland, but very very slowly.

Actually, in ALEX EB, in some of my observation (and experience when playing aedui), Casse try to land some soldiers for europe, even before taking all British Islands, but their invasion force is pitifully small...
