View Full Version : KotF Successor game faction discussion thread
From the mod poll so far and a lot of the posts from the discussion thread I'm guessing we will be playing a mod (likely LTC) that includes the territory and factions from the regular game.
So, with that in mind, what factions would everyone like to make the upcoming faction poll?
For my part I've always been fond of Spain. I like the way their unit roster progresses and they're far away from any of the factions played thus far. They're also in a neat position of likely expanding on two continents simultaneously, which brings up interesting roleplaying possibilities. With that in mind Sicily is in a similiar position. If that weren't enough, I'm also rather fond of Poland and Denmark. :clown:
What does everyone else think? If most factions end up mentioned I could just make a big poll with all of them, maybe have the most popular 3 or 4 get a second poll for the final decision.
I'm good for Poland, Denmark, or England, although I prefer Portuguese over Spanish, mostly because blue and silver are kick :daisy: while pink and yellow make me go "ugh".
I'd vote a no on Sicilians unless our ships have very good movement rates, otherwise civil wars may become trouble some with each House most likely creating a fortress of their provinces that require a naval invasion to get to.

I personally prefer France. I argued for it in LotR and will continue to do so here. I imagine I'll do it in the next game as well should we pick a different faction. We're a good centralized location, with possibilities of expansion into the HRE, Italy, Spain, and England (imagine the RP possibilities there), as well as farther on for those who prefer desert-based warfare (although I personally am tired of it by now).
In addition to the possibilities of expansion, the names of the units and men are also very familiar to us. Thus, we won't have any problem remembering them or writing out. This will in turn help the immersion factor which I think a lot of us say was lacking in LotR thanks to the names.

Nor would we for the English or Danes - You don't see French Berserkers now do you!
France would definitely fit the feudal system we have going with the rules, although I suppose that argument could be made for most of the factions mentioned thus far. They weren't my favorite when we were picking a faction for LOTR because they're so close to the HRE, but it's been a long time since KOTR, and France's position would likely give them more interaction with Spain and England which could be interesting.
I think I'll make a poll pretty soon (within the next day or so) with all the major factions mentioned so far. The top couple from that poll will go head to head after a couple days.

I'd definitely argue for either France or England. While I'm self-confessed Anglophile, France may be slightly more feasible, given their owning more provinces historically, the possibilty of roleplaying Crusades, and historical precedents for expanding into northern Spain, Germany, and Italy.
I'm in favor for Spain. I guess from the choices given thus far, my second pick would be France.
Though I love england more, i thing France would be most suitable.

How about a unified Italy?
Could be the new rome. if not one of the factions then the three of them allied and hotseat. would be rtw vanilla sort of setup.

France.
If were playing France, then I am a Flemishman or Norman, if that's acceptable :\. My only grief with France is the bland unit selection, and the names - I just don't like a lot of the French names for some reason...
I'll give up my love for Denmark though if someone can tell me I can be a socially acceptable bloodthirsty warrior who's out for fun and profit.
I don't see why your character can't be from wherever you'd like.

You can roleplay a Norman, who's not forgotten the old ways.

Yeah, there are plenty of options. Look at KotR. If my memory serves right, we had the following:
- A renegade French Templar that joined up with the HRE (Hugo de Cervole - Tristan)
- The descendant of the old English Kings before William the Conqueror took over (Lukas Godwinson - flyd)
- An entire family that had some connection to Spain that I can't remember offhand (the Von Salzas - Warluster)
- The spawn of Satan that rose to rank of Duke and the commander of Republican forces in the Battle of Trent (Arnold - AussieGiant)
It shouldn't be too difficult. We're very flexible for a good story.

I'd love to get a picture of Arnold fleshed out sometime.
"spawn of satan", he was misunderstood. :clown:

It's okay AG. Arnold's vassals understood him, although in Becker's case that was only until that whole Illuminati business was made public. :laugh4:

I've got a sketch started out, something like this perhaps?

I've been doing some thinking recently (I work overnights in a tollbooth this summer, so my mind's had a lot of time to wander) and I think KotR would be translated very well into a TV series. It could be set up Battlestar: Galactica style, with a focus on the main generation of characters (Lothar, Arnold, Becker, the von Kastiliens, et al.):
Miniseries: Heinrich's Papal affair
Season 1: Coming-of-age of the characters to Jobst's death
Season 2: Succession dispute to Illuminati's putting a hit out on Siegfried
Season 3: Siegfried's death to Bern
Season 4: Bern aftermath to Trent

I would be wonderful if the whole thing couldn't be compiled into a book first - should be to hard, just take fairly long. I wonder how big it would end up being?

I always thought KOTR's later years would make a good Shakespearean tragedy. Although admittedly, I came to that conclusion while thinking about what would have happended if Sigismund had lived. :sweatdrop:

KotR was a cracking good story.
At face value the story was excellent even without the Illuminati stuff happening in the background.
That was the best part about it for me. There was such a good depth in the narrative and so many contributors.
The characters were strong enough to run the story. The exception being the cataclysm.
I thought the game was pretty character driven during the Cataclysm. At least from my standpoint of a lowly newly recruited RGB it seemed to be all about conflicts between larger than life characters like Hummel and the loyalists, Becker and Arnold, etc.

I didn't write that statement very well Zim.
What I meant was that the cataclysm was an "event" in order to "up the tempo" however even then the characters were still driving the story.
