How Do You Set up A Mulitplier Game?

I've never played multiplier, but a friend of mine has recently broke down and bought RTW. Is it possible to PBEM? And what is the difference between LAN and that other thing?

In multiplayer, you can play everyone in the world, through LAN it must be between someone has got your IP address, so a close friend/friends.
