Just posted in an apothecary thread about this as I got this problem from yesterday. I played the game fine in the morning but got some graphical flickers on the campaign map (which I got pre-patch too, but they weren't causing crashes so didn't do anything about it). Nvidia released a new driver version last week so decided to try it to see if it fixes anything or gives a performance boost...and now the game doesn't load. As that's the only change that was made to my computer and the game worked post-1.3 fine with older drivers, I think it's fair to say there is some conflict between the latest Nvidia drivers and the patch.

So, to fix the problem I imagine it's just a case of going through the Nvidia drivers backwards until we find a stable version although I don't know what version I had before and I'm starting to doubt whether it's worth the effort to play this game anymore

Obviously if you don't all have Nvidia graphics cards then there may be another issue at play.

Go to
C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXX\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Empire

And delete everything except your savegame folder.

the newer NVIDIA drivers seem to have trouble with the older cards, I ahven't tried the latest latest, but when i tried updating a month or two back, the drivers didn't recognise the card so I had to use some beta driver, best advice is to roll back to the last drivers that worked.

182.50 are the most stable i've found for ETW, on 8800 GTS 320 mb. Also, what faction heir suggests works if you ended up with a corrupted something from the update, which happens.
