View Full Version : Faction bonuses?

What factions have certain bonuses like cheaper units etc? If any.

I saw it mentioned somewhere, and I don't know if it's true or not. I tried using search engine but nothing, and nothing in the guide.
Example: Faction X having unit Z cheaper by 10 florins.

Welcome to the Org, Stranger! ~

Wherever it was that you read/heard about factions in MTW being able to purchase units at a "discount" price, I'm afraid I must tell you that you were misinformed. Certainly there are certain factions that can train and/or have access to units that give you a very good value for your money -- two examples would be the the Danes being able to recruit Vikings, and the English being able to recruit Gallowglasses in Ireland (once they conquer it) -- but factions in MTW aren't able to actually train units at a lower cost than another faction.

Perhaps you were reading about MTW's predecessor, Shogun Total War? Because in that game, the different clans (factions) *do* receive discounts for recruiting certain troops (and/or buildings) exactly like you describe: The Oda can recruit Yari Ashigaru for less, the Uesugi can recruit Samurai Archers for less, the Hojo can build castles for less, etc.

Anyway, I hope that answers your question! ~:)

Ah, ok thanks :) I've been reading around some random threads so it's quite possible it might've been something related to Shogun. I asked because I haven't really noticed any difference in Medieval, and it's been a long time since I played Shogun.

Hello Stranger,

In fact you are on the right track and ‘ol Martok here should spend a little less time over at the ETW-section I think (Sorry Martok, you happened to remember things wrong this time, it happens to all of us). :wink2:

There are about 50 (roughly) various things (units, agents, boats), that various factions, get about a 25% discount on. Grab a Gnome-editor and you are in business – that’s the easiest way to find out the details on these things….

Gnome links don't work for me, at least those in Tools section.

I have never checked by myself but I am pretty sure that the French get a rebate on Xbows (and perhaps arbs). No idea regarding the other 49 discounts.

Apart from discounts, the Byzantine Emperor gets a bonus on influence and command stars for himself, and on command stars for heirs.

In the unit_prod file (vanilla Grand Campaign: crusaders_unit_prod11.txt), column 12 is the faction bonus column (titled "Ruler ID troop advantage Label: Some Leaders are given discounts on various troops or buildings.") There are quite a few listed, I should probably add this to the wiki.

Some of those bonuses are absurd IIRC. There is one for something like Orthodox Bishops for the Hungarians?! Or something like that anyway. I think there's at least one other stupid one as well, possibly for the Byzantine faction, but can't remember what it is offhand. To be honest you don't really notice them unless you go looking for them.

Even when I notice the discounted prices I typically build the same type army mix.

My guess is that the discounts are there to guide you to building a more historically accurate mixture of troops.

Indeed it's ridiculously easy to get good generals with the Byzantine Empire. At one stage I had no fewer that 7 7-star Kata Generals, all in the Jedi class, that could take out entire divisons of spearmen solo. Gotta keep them away from Armour-piercing missile fire though,as it wreaks havoc on them.

Wiki pages for units, ships, and agents updated from the unit prod files, "Faction Discount" field added to the unit infobox on the top rightside of the page. I did not update units with impossible discounts, but did update for non-recruitables (foot knights). The discounts for run-of-the-mill units were fine for the most part, there were culture conflicts with some artillery pieces and the Poles had discounts for Orthodox clergy. :inquisitive:

The basic discounts are:

French get love for High (all "chivalric" units and crossbows), plus Bishops/Cardinals
Italians get all galleys and firearms, plus Italian Light Infantry
Swiss get all varieties of pikes and Urban Militia
Danes get Vikings and Longboats
The Byz get Spies/Assassins/Emissaries, Naptha, and Genoese Sailors
Germans get all "gothic" units, some cannons, and Turcopoles
English get Archers, Billmen, Gallowglasses, some cannons, Cog
Novgorod gets Woodsmen, Russians get Horse Archers
Turks get siege cannon, Ghazis and Khwarazmian Cav
Egyptians get Camels Warriors
Aragonese get all Inquisitors and Carracks
Burgundy get Mounted Crossbows

For VI, Welsh get Assassins and Archers, Saxons get Armoured Spearmen, and the Mercians get Spies.

Anyone know if the discounts have any effect on multiplayer army selection? That would be stupid for balance purposes, but

Very cool, drone. Much appreciation for the updates.

No idea, although I too can only hope/presume that discounts aren't in MP. It would strike me as being....unwise if they were.

They have no effect IIRC. There are several columns in the unit prod file that are redundant, some that apply only to SP, others that apply only to MP or custom battles.
