Post 1.03 there seems to be a new diplomatic relationship item: "unreliable ally", which hits relationships with a -25 point penalty. The penalty decreases over time.
The penalty seems to be "global" if alliance is not honored when an ally is attacked and local (just with the respective ally), if an alliance is not honored when an ally is the attacker (and invites the player). The local penalty seems to apply also, if during a war joined by both allies, the player signs a peace-deal with the enemy before the AI faction does.
That latter part of this feature bugs me a bit. I have had a situation in which my faction and my ally have beaten the enemy to pulps. The enemy agrees to sign a peace deal with me and that results in a diplomatic penalty with my ally. I can see the logic for the penalty, but diplomatically, there seems to be no way to sign a 'global armistice' forcing the enemy to sign peace with both allied parties at the same time.
I think, it would be a good idea to incorporate "sign peace with X" diplomatic proposal into the game. That way, it might be possible to entice my ally to sign peace with the enemy too (giving them some of the conquered territory or something...).
