This guide may be spreaded all over the internet and beyond as long as theres a mention that I have done it. I'll update this when I get time to parse through those lua scripts. So stay tuned! :)

(Admiral traits are all there. Some testing needed, but all triggers are there.)

nice, although i find I have problems getting ANY traits on my leaders except bad ones, like I'll get the landscaper follower and thats it. Most AI nations leaders seem to have 3 or more traits but mine, doesn't even have 1.

Thats because chances are very low for triggers. They are like 2-4% for every event(!). I don't like it. Also I don't like it when you can get very good/famous etc. general in few battles(if you are lucky) and those who have won more than 100 heroic victories can be generals with no recognition at all.

I've never had this problem at all. After one or two victories my generals have a load of positive traits/ancillaries and become expert generals everytime.

The most critical factor seems to be the odds of the battles. If you go into every battle with a significant advantage then your leaders aren't going to learn much or get much recognition.

I restrict my stacks to 12 units (13 if one of them is a general unit) as a base with up to 2 additional regiments of militia troops from the local garrison if I'm defending (nothing if I'm attacking), only allow myself 1 instance of any royal unit (eg life guards, royal cavalry, etc), 4 instances of elite units (such as cuirassers) and no restrictions on regulars in the European theater. In colonial theaters I basically do not allow any royal or elite units, treat regulars as elite (4 units max in the theater) and use natives/sepoys/etc as the balance of my forces with same stack size limitations.

I play on hard battle difficulty and my generals die quite a bit, given that I am forced to use them in just about any battle vs a full stack if I want to win. So I am forced to build up new generals up fairly regularly. It's never been an issue - a couple of heroic victories and my general is at 5-6 stars and loads of ancillaries/traits.

It works the same for admirals... after I figured out steamships are pretty much the best combat vessel in the game and practically an exploit against the AI i stopped using them, but not before a squadron of 3 steamships with a freshly recruited admiral destroyed a full enemy stack of brigs/sloops and a few sixth rates. the admiral gained 5-6 ancillaries/traits and went from zero to hero in one battle.

Nope theres only some triggers for odds and I did remember wrong about those probabilities, sorry. Check out the first post to see how things work really. :)
