*facepalm*

Its Lambda as in Lakedaimon...

Only Spartans get to use it...

Or those that kill Spartans...

But they don't really appreaciate that sort of thing...

wow....that.....that was thoroughly screwed the **** up.

anyway yah, the Lambda is the spartan symbol, for lakedaimon, the region in which sparta lies in.

Apartantly they are supposed to be the Athenian Elite Hoplites, or the bodyguard ones are.

And I'd say the Spartan symbol is rather the Dokana, really was important to the Spartans before the Lambda came in.

Nope, they simply represent an elite hoplite group of noblemen. Be that Athenian, Corinthian, or any other polis. Elite bands of extremely well equiped and trained hoplites formed by the nobility.

Not sure offhand as I would need to go looking through the internal forum, but I believe Keravnos used the scorpion on the shield based on an Athenian coin.

Cool anyways. I guess there would be some archaeological evidence supporting the choise of shield emblem. It's the EB team, after all :2thumbsup:

ive noticed they like to use a set of shield types for each diferent culture:

in epirus, makedon, and greece, i have seen the sscorpion shield in several different units. as well as other designs(cant think off the top of my head)

Hans van Wees also mentions the scorpion as a motif in "Greek Warfare". I haven't got it with me though, so I cannot check his source.

Anyway, in most Greek poleis (Sparta being the notable exception) the motif on the shield was left to individual preference. The motifs generally had a religious background or represented attributes that the bearer valued: a bull for aggression, an anchor (like the Seleucid faction symbol) for steadfastness, a scorpion for deadliness, and so on. Alkibiades combined both: his motif for the Sicilian expedition was an Eros wielding thunderbolts (not an usual motif, apparently). Van Wees also mentions a shield design featuring a life-sized image a fly, playing on the notion that the fly is the bravest of all animals, because no matter how often it is swatted away by a human several times its size, it will always come back.

The scorpion was used by many peoples, before the Lambda the Spartans used it as well as a Mora emblem. :2thumbsup:

Indeed. I remember reading that when I browsed the forum section of Hegemonia City States at TWC. Heck, I think their Homioi skin even had that emblem on their shields.

And here are the "true" Spartan emblems! :sweatdrop:

Imagine what sort of shield imagery we would use in modern times. I'd chrome the thing or have a mirror finish on it.

They do look cool and I prefer them, but those Spartans just had to ruin it for us by changing shield emblem. :whip:

Too bad in EB 2 its going to be all Lambda again, can't wait to see em though.

Edit: Can't read Greek so just noticed, the lower part is explaination for outer rim emblems! Always thought they were part of another page, someone can read what they say? Waves were Marines(or so I've read, then again waves and marines... there's a connection), the other tree I'm not sure of.

You could ask Maion, if you are still on speaking terms? ...

I dislike your way of arguing, blanket statements with no sources, but I got to give you, those are nice shield emblems.
