View Full Version : Bloodiest battle
Has anybody actually fought a bloody battle like 2000+ people died in SP? (like to hear the stories http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif)
I ever auto resolved one battle with 5000 died, but personally I only "saw" 1200 died in total. I finally won in a margin but lost like 80% of my men.
Yeah, I needed to kill a horde quickly once so lined up with lots of muskets and let him attack with the timer off. He would rout rally rout rally each unit till it was down to a few and went off the board. Then same with the next lot. I fired away with muskets till they ran out of ammo then replaced them with reinforcements three times over.
Then I hit a limit on the number of units the game could handle in one battle. Exactly the same point when I reloaded and tried again. All my Mons started to go funny, my troops turned the colour of the enemy and the game crashed.
So I never did see how many I killed, but I posted a screenshot of the massive piles of bodies in front of the musket line. There were probably a good 4000 or so to my loss of about 100

Well my best fight when it comes to radio of kills was 860 kills 5 losses in a friendly game in a bridge map. They routed before they could reach the end of the bridge... those damn archers though killed 5 of my brave naginata :P

The pic isn't on the web at the moment, cos i'm reworking my website. If you remind me next week things should be sorted.
That's unless anyone can post a link to a completely free image hosting service.

This is kind of stupid but this is the biggist record ive ever had...fair or not fair i dont care..well i had 7 units of Naganita against 7 armies of ashiaru...each army having 16 units of ashgaru and my men killed over 8000 men, while i only lost about 200-300 men, it was cheap but a lot of fun and VERY bloody, i also maneged to kill 3 of the 7 generals without loseing my own
My bloodiest, without the game crashing, was when I(Mori) attacked Hojo in Mutsu. Using the 120 man units and doing pretty well at pushing all of his routed units up the big hill in the middle of the defenders zone. I thought that I had them all routed whn things turned bad. I think I might have killed off one of the frontline units and then the stream of reinforcements started. My monks and ND were charging near of the crest of the hill when a wave of fresh YC came flying through the routing troops and kept my troops from making the crest. My troops held for a while but the increasing weight of Hojo’s reinforcements was too much and they broke. I gathered the rest of my forces back in one of the grove of trees to stem the rout, but they were routed also. I managed to rally a few of my monks and ND in making a stand on a low hill deep in my own zone. They were routed again, but bought enough time to get my other routed units off the map and have my reinforcements to start coming on. The first reinforcements managed to hold together long enough to keep my army from being totally routed. Hojo’s forces continually attacked them only to be thrown back. When I had sufficient numbers, I launched an attack and most of his army routed back. I pursued them trying to push them off the map before time ran out, but no such luck. I lost around 2200 and killed about 2800 of Hojo’s.
I wouldn’t say that you could walk on dead bodies from one end of the map to the other, because in a couple of places you have to jump. I’ve got pictures if anyone is interested. My email: forne002@tc.umn.edu
I’ve had some other ones where I managed to knock off 2000+ of the enemy but this one takes the cake for total casualties. The big battles would be more fun if you didn’t have to worry about the game crashing. See this thread: http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000270.html I think it could be the answer to the horde bug. If you could keep fighting until all the units from one side were killed or routed, you could fight armies of 10,000+ and cut them down faster than they can build as long as you don’t use the timer. Of course battles might last 2-3 hours, I think that would be better than fighting the same battle every turn and only knocking a 1000 troops off of it every turn.

JB: just read that link you put up, one I missed at the time.
After my crashing problems in the battle I described above I did some tests. I found that while the time to the crash could vary considerably it was directly linked to the number of reinforcement units that came on the field.
My game may have lasted longer because it was generaly only one side replacing their units. But the total for both sides always added up to the same (can't remember the number now).
The game reached a point where every unit that came onto the field after a certain point had identical Mons regardless of which side they were on.
The Mons always changing to match the last unit that came onto the field. So when one of the enemy units routed the Mons of my own reinforcements would change to the colour of the enemy unit that subsequently came on. The crash would always happen when the first of these dodgy units to route left the field.
I was just wondering that this might have been what was happening to the others in that thread. The reason it wasn't so obvious being that they were routing them at the point of entry very quickly. Where I was routing these units across the length of the field so was more likely to notice the strange effects.
As I said above I have a screenshot of this happening somewhere. I can't post it cos I have nowhere to put the pic but if you're interested I could mail it.
Tone,
Does the computer run out of Mons for the reinforcements? I was looking for a tga or lbm files with the Mons. The ones in the standard folder don't match up with the ones I get in the game. If you figure something out, post it in the tech forum.

I never really play the campaign much so I have a couple questions:
Tone) In your post you said you reached teh number of units the game could handle. Did you mean you just got the whole 16 units in? Or in expert skill level can you have more units than you normally can? Can you call in reinforcements when you want to? Or do they just come in automatically. I only remember one battle where I had about 4000 troops in Mino when it got attacked. They were almost all musket. I remember as a few units died off a few more units would come into the map, but I don't remember having the option to call in reinforcements when I felt it necessary.

jobeare,
read my post in the mods section about .bif files and unit color mods. i believe the files you want to modify are the same type as the ones i'm talking about there.
ok, shiro...i'll shut up now. no need to move this thread ;)

JB:
Yes it does appear to run out of Mons, check out my 4 reinforcement units with the same Mons as the enemy reinforcements in the pic. Yeah the ones in the standard folder are nonsense, like Kraellin said he and BanzaiZAP have posted the best info on the .lbm and .bif files where they are likely to really be.
Smeegol:
the reinforcements come in automaticaly. When you invade or defend with more than the normal 16 units it will queue the extras and bring them on when a unit routs off or you withdraw it. In this case I was defending with about 24 units giving myself a few reinforcements and he invaded with well over 100 units, hence the length and bloodiness of the battle with the timer off and me not routing him off the field.

It was a while ago and this was the only pic of it I could find. My musket line is behind the camera, i'm looking through their smoke. There were alot more bodies strewn on the slope out of pic on the right.
For anyone interested this was one of my first campaigns and the one in which I learnt hanging around to build all those armouries and sword dojo's is a mistake. Just get stuck in and finish the game before it reaches this stage.
