Is there any way to get the ETW demo without steam?

No! None.
and when the game is installed the demo goes away.
I really want to try the demo first. Looks like I need steam.
What does steam actually do?
Is there any other reason, besides trying ETW, to get it?

Steam is a chat program, a community page thing, a userpage, a clan page, its a lot of stuff.
Its a piece of software which you can throw all of your shortcuts onto to launch from, you can buy a lot of games and keep them, registered to your account. Lose your disc? no problem, just download the files. Moving computer? take the steam folder with you, when you launch the game it will update the path and off you go!
Its a very useful program, but people (myself included before I started using it again) have had bad experiences with it, and claim it is a memory hog. It takes up about 45mb of RAM.
One more quick steam question: What currency is the game prices in?

American dollars.
I have to agree with everything pevergreen said.
While it is a bit of a memory hog, Steam itself is sort of a jack of all trades.
Good at everything, but not great in one particular area. Personally, I love Steam. I had the origional program many, many years ago and, well......hated it.
Now, like I stated above, I think Steam is great. Many, and frequent, Steam updates and easy game patching are just 2 of the many reasons I like Steam.
Oh!! And its free, which is nice:laugh4:
Unfair, that means I still have to pay 100 bucks for ETW
American dollars.
That's not true, I can pay with Euro's...

You can pay in your own currency providing it is a stable and widely used one. Europeans pay with euros, Americans with dollars and British folks with pounds. Start steam and see in what currency the prices are. That is the currency you will have to pay with.

Australian's have to pay in USD. However, it means its 30-40 dollars cheaper than going down to the local store.
Australia has it bad for games. Nearly as bad as germany.

Steam is great IMO, but whether you like it or hate it digital distribution is the future and it's not going away. I use both Steam and Impulse (Stardock's version) and as a result i havent bought a game on an actual physical disk for well over a year. I think within a couple of years you wont be able to buy a game in a shop any more.
IMO one of the best things about these platforms is that they give small independent games producers equal 'shelf space' with the big boys. You were never going to see games like Braid or Mount & Blade in mainstream game shops very often (especially taking into account the dominance of consoles nowadays means PC titles are getting less and less space) so it's great to be able to get hold of them just as easily as you can get Far Cry 2 or ETW.
