Glad to see you step up to the plate OK

Not to be too picky, but many times the last trait is cut off too much so that it's hard to make out the exact trait.

Also I wonder if anyone's gonna pick the 1 loyalty guy! :beam:

I see 2 that I want, but all bets are on that they will get taken :shame:

Alexandre le Sueur - Decent, nice name, and awesome portrait
Raynaud de Xaintrailles - High Command, has the "Smart" trait, decent portrait

I wanted to avoid taking two captures and then slog through combining them when it was only one trait being partially obscured. Apologies. If someone has a specific question about the obscured trait on a character I'll be happy to take a look at the save.

As for the adoptee, it's up to Ramses as Louis to accept or decline the offer.

https://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb88/douglaslain/adopt.jpg

Considering a player hasn't been assigned to him and we have about 50 RGBs to choose from, I'd suggest declining so as to leave a child slot open.

ahhhh, looks Like I will have to miss it then. :shame:

As for Cultured Drizzt Fan, perhaps you could rank your peferences for the available characters, send it to Zim in a PM, and when your name comes up we'll give you the highest ranked available character?

Ramses II CP
07-16-2009, 17:13
If someone particularly wants the character up for adoption I will accept (Partly because he looks like Vissa from LotR), but there is little to distinguish him from the rest of the chivalry pack so if no one wants him, as seems likely, I'll decline.

I actually managed to decipher those that I was interested in. Amazing how much you can deduct from just glimpsing the upper fifth of the text. My initial confusion came from some of the avatars having initial dread ratings and I tried to figure out from which trait the dread had come. :wall:

I dare Econ to take one of the "sexually liberated" avatars...

And Eudes d_Argouges is indeed an error, correct? Otherwise his last name would be a nightmare to pronounce - dunderscoreargouges :laugh4:

There are several with the underscore error.

TheFlax
07-16-2009, 17:56
I'm pretty sure those are supposed to be apostrophes, so we can just treat them as such.

_Tristan_
07-16-2009, 18:02
The game wouldn't let me make names with apostrophes.. hence the underscore...

TinCow
07-16-2009, 18:05
Does "d'XXXX" have a different meaning than "de XXXX"?

_Tristan_
07-16-2009, 18:08
No, you could compare it in English with a/an... Depends if there is a vowel/consonant following the "de"

_Tristan_
07-16-2009, 18:12
Alexandre le Sueur - Decent, nice name, and awesome portrait

Nice name ? I'm not so sure... It would translate roughly as Alexandre the Sweaty :laugh4:

I wonder if it would speed up the character selection process if the top 5 players on the list just ranked 5 avatars in their order of preference? That way, if they are not online when it is their turn to pick, they can be given the available avatar highest on their list and we can move on to the next 5 etc.

Also, it might be an idea to have an "alert" system like we used for successor games - when one player picked up a save, we'd PM the next inline to alert them - telling them that if we did not get a response after a decent interval, we would move on to the next one. That way the game was not held up waiting for the next in-line. I'd suggest PMing players 1-10 in the list to alert them and tell them if they don't reply or post that they are ready and waiting for their turn, they may be skipped when the time comes if they remain unresponsive.

I'm just thinking some players above Vladimir have not posted on this sub-forum for a while.

TinCow
07-16-2009, 18:42
PMing everyone in advance is a good idea.

I will post my top 5 list after I get home. I'd like to look at the save before I make my selection, because the traits of the Kings, Dukes, etc. could theoretically impact my decision.

Does this remind anyone of a sports draft? Everybody has their big board with the "sure catch" candidates, reaches, and dream choices. We'll be able to evaluate how everybody did in six months or so, and there's more pressure on the higher choices to perform well (because the guys farther down along the line would have loved to snap them up).

Raynaud, I picked you second. Don't fail me... :laugh4:

The major stats to watch maybe the age of avatars with the age mod in effect... There is a risk that those in their thirties might not be long for the game...(though not like it was it the beginning...)

That's the criterion I would consider first...(but I'm stuck with a fortyish king :wall:)

In LotR, Methodios was one of the older starting avatars and those few years I missed at the end when the rebellion was raging...

I'm pretty sure it would be derogatory as in, "is always sweating", but there is no special connotation in french that I know of. I'd guess its up to the person playing that character to say why he has that name.

Standard procedure a was to reload in those cases, wasn't it? Or was that just because of some of SS's odd loyalty issues?

I reloaded to prevent Ammonathas from rebelling once as Megas in LOTR...I just assumed I was supposed to.

Well, it wasn't allowed by the rules, but frankly that's the way I hoped people would handle it. I agree that's the best solution, especially when the rebellion makes no sense according to the plotline the player has developed. We have mechanisms for rebellion in our rule system, and it's more fun to use those than to have the avatar simply go gray.

TheFlax

Couldn't we use the console for making sure no character rebels due to the loyalty stat? I don't think it would be unfair to eliminate negative traits affecting loyalty this way.

Please don't eliminate those traits. They do add +Chiv or +Dread as of the second level, stats which both help in combat and add to the roleplay.

Anyways, it's my 2 cents.

So, what's your backup choice? I wonder if you could post it here (or send it to theFlax if you want it kept under wraps) - and ideally have a backup backup in case Marcus Agrippa also gazumps you?

After you, there are only 4 more players in the queue: if they each post a list of their 6 preferred avatars in order (or send it to theFlax), character selection will be complete.

Fair enough, but if you post it to theFlax (with a backup), you won't need to be online after Marcus Agrippa shows up.

The Council is set to start Monday morning (sometime after 12 AM PST). The next two days, among other things, will be used to resolve and remaining rules issues.

With this timetable, I think we should accelerate the character selection process. Players need to have their avatars by the time the Council starts and it is unfair on people like Vladimir if they are left in limbo because of one or two no-shows.

I suggest that if Marcus Agrippa has not chosen an avatar within 24 hours of this post:

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=2291138&postcount=77

we should skip to Cultured Drizzt Fan.

More generally, I would recommend all other people still waiting for an avatar to PM TheFlax with a ranked list of their 5 preferred avatars within 24 hours. When that time is up, theFlax can then allocate the remaining avatars - anyone not expressing a preference going to the back of the queue.

If we do that or something similar, we can be sure that everyone who has showed up will have an avatar before the Council starts on Monday.

MA hasn't been online since before it was his turn... I'd say move on to Drizzt, who will now have Yvon Lacaze as requested.

I will send MA a pm. He can come in anytime to take a character. In the meantime, everyone is up.

My Apologies gents I thought it might be a while before the game started as so many threads were for what's the next game.
If I'm allowed to choose right now I'd go for Alexandre Le Sueur.
Sorry again for not being around recently.

2 Chivalry, huh? Don't know how that will sit with your friends in Aquitaine. I don't think showing mercy towards your enemies is near the top of their to-do list. :laugh4:

Chivalry is sadly very easy to lose, but if he wants to keep it, Vladimir's character is very welcome to join the Order of the Fleurs de Lys - as is any other like minded player.

Pshaw, let's not take those chiv/dread points too literally. We're all playing killers, just some of us are more rule abiding killers than others. I take Louis' most dread-tastic trait to mainly manifest as an utter indifference to the lot of the peasant, a quality I dare say he would have in common with virtually all the nobility of the period.

Aquitaine is not the exclusive realm of the dreadly types. All are welcome to come enjoy the wine, wenching, and wrenching away of our enemies' lives and wealth. :2thumbsup:

Pshaw, let's not take those chiv/dread points too literally.

I actually don't consider the ranks in chivalry or dread to have any impact on my RPing. The building blocks I started constructing Christophe on were his two less-common traits: Cruel and Cunning and Plain. The descriptions of the traits themselves are far more useful in creating a character than counting the number of skulls or helms. There are plenty of traits that give dread due to battlefield actions which would very plausibly be done by 'chivalrous' avatars as well. I think the game will be far more interesting if the characters are judging each other by their actions rather than by simply counting the chiv/dread ranks and notching a person up as good/evil. That's not how the world works.

If anyone does that with me, they will have a hell of a time keeping up...because in my view they are only a guide.
