Anyone else had a situation like this.

I had 2 Romani armies in Aedui territory, a depleted stack that had been knocked about a bit and a full stack of fresh troops that had cost me a small fortune. The gallic scum had a large stack in a city and 2 smaller stacks close to the city. I pinned the large Aedui stack by seiging with my depleted stack and chased the other Aedui armies off with my main army before joining the seige of the Aedui town with that army.

During the Aedui turn they sally against the smaller of my stacks, and not liking reinforcement battles where the reinforcements are the bigger army I decide to withdraw the smaller army. By the time my turn comes round though the larger army has totally vanished. No message about turncoats or betrayal or heroic deaths.

Have I strayed into the barbarian triangle?:skull:

I retreated my half wounded Carthagenian army from a full stack of Roman army... Turns out my army had no where to run, and they died without a fight.

Would be the same case for you I guess.

So if the army has used up all it's MPs getting to the siege it dies without a fight if the withdraw option is selected?

they also die if they are in a province that does not border your empire(or there is a Fleet ready for a hasty retreat)

I see.

Mind you the province they were in did border my empire and as far as i recall they should have had some movement left( lazy good for nothing slobs ).

And wouldn't I have received a family member death message?

Your well reasoned arguments are anathema to me, I prefer my theory about alien abduction personally.

hmm, don't know what happened then, maybe they retreated onto a bridge :d then they sometimes dissapear. but If you manage to find the commander via character list you can still move them.

not very likely but about as likely as your theory ^^

Check the fertility of the ground where your army last stayed. Does it say "swamp"? If so, you may well know the grisly fate of your soldiers (assuming, of course, that they stayed there for at least a season: once caught in the quagmires of such swamps, escape is nearly impossible, but Mother Earth does take her time in sucking the bodies fully beneath her surface).

The case of your family member's death not being mentioned is easily explained. After all, he is not actually "dead", but merely encased in slime beneath the earth's surface. The swamp is rich in nitrogen and nutrients, hence its high fertility, and could easily sustain the life of a human being for more than 18 months (as records from the time period so indicate). Burrowing frogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Burrowing_Frog) and other such creatures would provide sustenance to the human, and obviously water abounds in such environments. In reality, your family member would be most likely to die from despair more than anything; in that case, it would be better to do away with the weak-minded individual anyway, don't you think?

They will also dies if there is no other province to retreat to. I.E. if they are on a single province island and retreat, the whole army no matter how large will be destroyed.

I don't think movement points really matter. I've seen my army fleeing when I had no more movement points left. (You can't order them to flee, but they can be routed.)

I guess it has something to do with being able to run away. If you're on an island, and there's no ship close to it that your army can flee to, your army will be dead. Maybe you lost yours because some bridge or mountain passage was blocked by a friendly or hostile army?

Check your FM's on the character list, the army may still be there it's just not showing on the campaign map.
Sometimes characters just disappear, I've had it happen to spies, diplomats and armies, find them on the character list, click on them, go back to the map and hey presto you will see their movemnt allowance, no character, move them and they should re-appear.

I just had this happen but to the AI.I sent out one unit of campanian cavalry to scout towards the cathaginian city on sicily, after breaking my treaty with them, and was given a force back by a full stack during their turn. They followed up with another attack and i figured my horse were toast as they had several units of elephants, cavalry, spearmen,a seven or eight star general, and various sundries.I was going to hit auto resolve but figured i would tough it out.

I ran my horse around like crazy and at the end of the battle i had one casualty to none for them and i figured it a draw or defeat.Result screen popped up and said it was a close victory?!?

Come my turn the entire army was gone and i could swear the battle took place in their territory though maybe it was along the border of the two regions,.I thought it really cheesy but it was a break after having fought several massive, and bloody, battles in southern gaul and the army in sicily being newly recruited, and green, didn't have to face it.
