Today the oldest man alive and one of the only other ww1 veterans left alive passed away.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8157128.stm

I'd like to pay my respects to a man who was part of a small group of remaining survivors from a bygone time. This man lived through some remarkable events from the hideous great war to the equally hideous second world war. He also lived through some happier times however and I really think the events he lived through towards the end of his life show a humanity starting to develop for the better.

R.I.P Henry Allingham. Be assured, on the 11th November every year for the rest of my life I will give time to remember people like you.

A ripe old age to get to. The changes that man must have seen. It reminds me of when my grandma died in the early 90s. She was born before telephones, radio, cars, aeroplanes, in fact most things we take for granted every day.

Having said that the generations born in the latter part of the 20th centuary have seen the fastest changes in society and technology ever made.

RIP Mr. Allingham.

RIP.
His grand children must be very lucky. The stories he was capable of telling them.......such people ought to write an autobiography of sorts before passing.

I only hope I live to see year 2100 and the colonisation of Mars.

What longevity! Of all that he'd seen in his life, here's the one I really can't get my head wrapped around:
His wife Dorothy, who he was married to for more than half a century, died in 1970.
The guy married, by all appearances, the woman of his dreams, 'till death did part them after more than fifty years. And he lived another 39 years on top of that. :dizzy2:

In addition to Mr. Allingham, now the last of Britain's WWI veterans has passed away (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32141785/ns/world_news-europe).:shame:

May both of them rest in peace

Edit: I see Justiciar posted the news first.
